That's because it was riddled with ports, bits of DLC and it was sandwiched at either end with remasters. Nintendo themselves announced 1 new game, Mario Tennis: Aces. After the abomination that was Ultra Smash, I'm in no rush to see more of this. It looks like more of the same with a tacked on Story Mode. The only thing I'll be curious to see is if Mario Tennis has now permanently joined other Nintendo franchises like Mario Party in the Mediocrity Club. It started out so well.
@AlternateButtons The way the narrator says "enjoy up to full 1080p HD graphics in TV mode" made me think that their will be resolution / framerate options like with FE Warriors. If there are going to be no resolution options why not just say "enjoy full 1080p HD graphics in TV mode". Hardly conclusive I know...
Since this was just a Mini Direct, I'm pretty happy with what we got. High-quality third party titles, a few Indies, updates on some first party stuff, and ports of Wii U titles that really deserve a second life.
That said, if we don't get a full-length direct outlining Nintendo's full first party lineup for 2018 within a month or so, I'll be pretty disappointed. We still need to know about Fire Emblem, Metroid, Pokemon, Octopath, Virtual Console, the full Online Service, system updates, and more.
@ilikeike Do not expect a Nintendo Direct at all anytime soon. If they had a lot of content they wanted to show right now they would have done it with this Direct. People talk like "Well, it's just a Mini Nintendo Direct", but the reality is that it was specifically chosen to be a Mini Nintendo Direct.
Nintendo could do a specific Direct for specific titles (Fire Emblem, maybe... But one would think it would have shown up in some way, shape or form here before that would happen), but general Nintendo Directs are very sparsely released nowadays, very different from the 3DS days (I miss those days!). Last year there were no general Nintendo Directs in the first half of the year. I have a feeling that this Mini Direct is their equivalent of the Switch presentation last year... Meaning, no general Directs anytime soon. The next big news we can look forward to is E3.
Wii U ports galore, just one new game (Mario Tennis Aces) and ports from other consoles or (past) handhelds. I am not sure how a Wii U or a PlayStation 3/4 owner is suppose to be excited about the new Nintendo Direct when it is mostly full of games we have already played.
A shame that Dark Souls Remastered is 30fps on the Switch...
@Peek-a-boo Well, that was my thinking. I already played all the Wii U games, and I'm not really looking forward to buying them again at full price. At least the Wii releases on the Wii U were digital games at a budget price.
Mario Tennis has a story mode at least. The Wii U game was very disappointing though, I'll definitely wait for reviews this time around.
@Harmonie Funny how we interpret the same thing from completely different angles. I view this "Mini Direct" the same way I did the Nindie Presentation after the Switch Event last year, i.e. a presentation to discuss all the smaller games that didn't/won't get mentioned in the main show. By that logic, I think that the purpose of this direct was to go over all the smaller projects (Wii U ports, DLC, etc.) to make way for a much larger Direct later on that will go over big things like online, Fire Emblem, triple-AAA third party games, and so on.
Even if that direct doesn't happen I'll still be fairly happy with the games revealed today. I was just hoping for more.
Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.
"I have certainly already played The World Ends With You, Payday 2, Dark Souls and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze" - people in this thread, apparently
I mean yeah the hype for it made this a bit silly (doubly so as a contrast to how they began last year) but this seems like a bunch of good to great quality games with a lot of variety that was mostly only a showcase of the next 4 months, without even showcasing close to all of what that timeframe has to offer.
I dunno, I guess I just didn't expect it to be as crazy as last year. There was no way Nintendo was gonna match that 2 years in a row, no one does!
@Whitewatermoose Where are the third parties? Well, @kkslider5552000 just mentioned three of them, plus there was Ys VIII and the SNK fighter game. And Fe is from EA, so maybe it counts, too. That's six in a 14 minute video. Pretty good, I think. Plus, you mentioned quite a few that we already know are coming, so they probably only felt like making new announcements (except for Fe).
This was incredibly good news. I was afraid they were going to leave the WiiU software library behind, but now I'm reassured. I'm definitely buying Donkey Kong because it looks like a great game, and it has already been reviewed well.
Hopefully this trend will continue until all WiiU games worth having is on the Switch. Obviously new games are also a must, but we already know new games are coming.
I was pleased with this direct. A few positive thoughts:
The "mini" aspect is great. Nice and consise. Nintendo have all the time in the world to elaborate on details outside the direct.
This was a very short-sighted direct. Pretty much everything is guaranteed by summer. I take this to mean that we've got the announcement of everything Q3 onwards to look forward to in the coming months.
I can understand why people don't like to see Wii U ports, but personally I'm all for them as long as we have some new titles. I like that there's some added content and I may double dip for at least one of these.
There were a few interesting surprises incl. The World Ends With You, the new SNK game, and Ys VIII. Very happy not to have picked up the latter on PS4 now.
Disappointed at a lack of major 1st party / virtual console / firmware, but their time will come.
