I am talking about Jan thru April 2018 specifically. There should be a decent release every two weeks at most.
If you averaged one release a week for the year, that is only 52 releases. That isn't that much.
Again, I am not knocking the games announced. I'm saying there should be more. I also expected ONE big game in the first 6 months of the year from Nintendo. I honestly figured it would be a late March or May release of Fire Emblem or Smash port.
To be honest, there isn't that many good releases for PS4 to look forward to. It took that console over 4 years to build up the game library it now has. Of course the Switch is playing catch up, so we should expect a higher frequency of good games, but you can't expect that much that quickly.
@Whitewatermoose I think Fire Emblem could still be May, reveal it in its own dedicated Direct and release a few months later like what happened for Echoes. If not May release, it'll probably end up being revealed at E3 and release in fall/holiday.
Kirby - announced previously
Fe - announced previously
Payday 2 - announced previously
Celeste - announced previously
TWEWY - already have it
DKC:TF - already have it
Hyrule Warriors - already have it
Pardon me for being underwhelmed.
The tennis game is very much 'wait and see', so really the only immediate positive I'm taking from the Direct is Ys VIII.
I'm really hoping another Direct of some sort will drop within a month, but I won't hold my breath.
@Peek-a-boo I certainly agree! I guess we can come to the conclusion that us Wii U owners aren't even the market for the Switch.
Hopefully in the end the Switch will have a wide variety of new entries for Nintendo's big franchises, but it looks like it's going to be a long road to get there, and with some of these franchises I'm beginning to get worried that Wii U ports are all we'll see.
@Harmonie
There were only so many Wii U games. Really the only big ones missing now are Mario Maker and Smash. Both I think Wii U owners would be happy to get again. I don't think we can fault Nintendo for building up the Switch library so quickly.

@skywake You think Wii U owners would be happy to own again? Well, as a Wii U owner, I most certainly do not agree. I spent a lot of money on SSB4, the GCN controller adapter, GCN controllers, and some DLC (not even all of it, I stopped before Cloud was released IIRC). I don't want to spend money on that game again. I don't want to see a port of it on the Switch unless it is ported after (at least the announcement of) a new Super Smash Bros.
As I said in my previous post, I worry that these ports are going to be released and not new iterations of these series. Especially with Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. where there are people actually saying they don't even want a new iteration.
I'm okay with ports, as long as they don't take away from new iterations being released. Like how Bayonetta is being ported to the Switch alongside the announcement of a new Bayonetta.
I wouldn't be concerned about not getting a new Mario Kart. The Mario Kart team developed ARMS and since that's been done for a while now, Mario Kart 9 could easily be their next project.
As for Smash, Smash Wii U laid a great foundation, considering Smash always take a while to develop it would probably be better to release a Deluxe port with new characters and stages.

You have to see it from a business perspective. There's software that cost lots of money to develop, that Nintendo never got back due to the WiiU selling so poorly. In order to get back that money they need to first sell a port, then afterwards they can make the next installment in a series. This is how they are doing it with Bayonetta (the port of 1 & 2 will come first). It's very likely they'll do it this way with Pikmin too.
The only game series they haven't done this with is Mario, but that was because they needed a system seller.

There is zero logic in that. Tropical Freeze, to just name one, didn’t sell nearly as much as it could have. Now that it’s going to be released on a much much more successful platform, it actually stands a chance. If anything, not releasing these games on Switch would decrease the chance of new iterations. And let’s be honest, nothing would stop for new iterations/sequels to come out anyways, last of which ports. You said it yourself, Bayonetta 3 is coming out even though... Ports.
@Whitewatermoose Well, we still could have a big title in the first half of the year (Though Kirby is one IMO), June is a likely candidate for the release of Fire Emblem.
As for the release every two weeks thing, yes January is a wasteland with only three physical releases (Rocket League, Lost Sphear, and Constructor), one of which was released last month digitally, and one of which is... underwhelming. Lost Sphear is still a major release though. February has: Dragon Quest Builders, Monster Energy Supercross, The Longest Five Minutes, Payday 2, Bayonetta 1&2, and more. March has Kirby Star Allies, Portal Knights, Bit Trip Runner 3, Blade Strangers, rumored a Telltale Guardians game, Attack on Titan 2, and rumored Scribblenauts Showdown. So I'd say we're averaging well over two games a week for the first quarter of the year already, and they haven't done April announcements yet.
@Agriculture I've never seen it from that perspective. I hope you're right. With a series like Donkey Kong Returns that could make sense. However, I just worry about series like Mario Kart, where a port wouldn't really be needed for that purpose.
@Agriculture EA's loot box shenanigans make a lot of sense from a business perspective as well. Nintendo should also implement them in their games.
I know (or hope) that you're joking, but when you consider the backlash from consumers if Nintendo did that, it would probably not even make any money.
Anyhow, I realize it might be provokative to say, but Nintendo is a business and will only act altruistic when it serves a purpose such as selling their new console or improving consumers trust in their brand. They did make a brand new 3D Mario game, but it's far less likely they'll make a brand new Pikmin and Super Smash Bros before first reselling the WiiU games.

Hopefully it's temporary, and as soon as all the games they want to port gets re-released they get back to making brand new games. It should be quick, since porting games don't take even close to as much time as making new games.
I'm usually pretty negative on these things, but woof - for a 14-minute sizzle reel that still didn't even mention big games like the new Yoshi, that was an amazing Direct. Mario Tennis and Dark Souls could probably get me through the year, but dang - some of those indies like Fe look really cool, too. And I'm definitely gonna do the Rabbids DLC: fantastic game and seems to be a good chunk of new content. And Kirby's gonna be a no-brainer.
I wanted to hold off coming here after watching it because I figured there would be a deluge of negativity because no online plans were revealed and Pokemon Switch wasn't announced for a release next week.
If Xbox or Sony would've come out with anything at all like this (handful of brand-new first party games, free DLC, fantastic indie lineup, remasters of a couple beloved first-party games all in 15 minutes), we'd all be singing their praises up and down the aisles. But hey, it's Nintendo - so get in line and complain.
Some of you guys disgust me a little bit sometimes. <goes back to ignoring the forums for a bit...maybe...hopefully...lol>
"I have certainly already played The World Ends With You, Payday 2, Dark Souls and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze" - people in this thread, apparently
For the record, I actually have played three of these games and probably wouldn't rebuy them. But even if I had a Switch AND was caught up with Nintendo's 2017 titles AND had the amount of time to play games I used to, I'd still see regular releases for me to buy. Like good games that look fun to play that I would factually be unable to play on anything else I personally have. Like, is that just me?
