Topic: Next Zelda game in development

Eiji Aonuma has confirmed that development on the next Zelda game has started - https://www.forbes.com/sites/olliebarder/2017/12/21/eiji-aonu...

Now they haven't said what the nature of the next Zelda is. What do you think it will be? A direct sequel to BotW (like Adventure of Link or Phantom Hour Glass or Link Between Worlds) or a stand alone game. Will they re-use the BotW map? Will it be as open world as BotW was or will they change up the formula again? Will it be a "smaller" game, maybe a top down Zelda game?

There was also a poll on this site a while ago that asked people what they wanted from this new game

https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/12/poll_surprise_a_new_...

Personally I wouldn't mind if the new game was a lot simpler and smaller in scale than Breath of the Wild. Something similar to A Link Between Worlds would be nice, but I'm sure they'll come up with something fun and innovative. Nintendo has never disappointed me with Zelda yet. At least no major disappointments, like with other series recently.

if Nintendo ended the 3ds with a 2d remake of Links Awakening, it would awesome imo

Just give me a spiritual successor to Majora's Mask and I'll be [the only one] who's happy.

Not the only one, I assure you!

It will definitely follow in the footsteps of BOTW for sure. I think both customers and the dev team fell in love with the formula.

I can see the next Zelda being a 2d game maybe next year sometime. Would love for it to have a traditional gameplay feel to it. Then maybe a new 3d Zelda by the end of 2020 should be long enough dev time if they are reusing assets...what do people think

I would like it to have a map that only reveals itself as you travel.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

@gcunit

How would that work in 3D exactly?

@Dezzy In my experience it usually only keeps track of your x-y position, so it doesn't matter where you are in the z-plane, revealing a certain amount of the map from a top-down perspective around you. If the map is in someplace enclosed (dungeon/cave), they usually implement it by revealing rooms/passages as you enter them.

Speaking of dungeons, that's what I want in the next Zelda game. Closest we got in BotW was the castle, and that wasn't a very good 'dungeon'.

I would love to see another Four Swords Adventures like the one on the GameCube, but with online options, split-screen multiplayer, and 3DS linking. But I would consider that a side project. As the main project I would love to see a return of the dungeons. The shrines were fun, but I always enjoyed piecing together the puzzles in the dungeons.

Keep fine tuning the Breath of the Wild. I believe they have so much more room for growth and with gaining experience and knowledge of how the Switch works best, they will be able to tweak so much more out of the Switch it should be crazy.
BotW should be the starting point and go from there. Why recreate the wheel when they have such an amazing experience already.
Take as long as they need. They did that with BotW and it turned out amazing.

@Judi Seriously! It doesn't even need to reference the game in any way, but I would absolutely love if they brought back the transformation mechanics, if not the whole mask mechanics in general.

Plus, it's criminal we only have 1 canon game with the most epic form of Link possible. (Fierce Deity)

Yes but in 3D that doesn't really work very well because you can control the camera so you could look into the distance and just see nothing at all. It could work with some kind of fog system I guess but it would be weird for an open-world type game. Being able to see into the distance in order to plan your route is what a full 3D games often require. Really works a lot better for a top-down 2D style.
Also, in nearly all computer graphics, Y is the vertical axis, not Z. The X-Z plane is generally what a character walks along. Not sure why it's that way but it is.

@Dezzy Just because the map screen isn't filled out doesn't mean there is any reason you shouldn't be able to see things in the distance. It just means you won't have a map of the area until you get closer to it.

@Dezzy in terms of a map (not the 3D environment) it doesn’t really matter if you can look around. I’ve played games where both the map reveals a set radius around you (common) or reveals based on what you can actually see direct line-of-sight from your position (rare, maybe one game I played did this?).

Also computer graphics sounds dumb, I bet designing it is a nightmare. Ima just go back to researching GPU architecture. Much more sane.

Yup, make the Majora's Mask to Breath of the Wild's Ocarina of Time. Recycle everything you can, bring back traditional dungeons (even better if they can do this without dropping the style of dungeon the Divine Beasts and shrines introduced) and crank up the atmosphere, writing and side-quests up to 11.

Oh, and reduce the size of the map significantly. Half or even a third of BotW's map is more than enough terrain to bring an overworld packed with content to life.

Oh right, if he was referring to just the details on the map then OK that's different. I thought he meant like the fog of war thing from RTS games where the map you haven't explored is covered in darkness. That sorta thing.

They still have the other parts of the hidden MAP to finish. So it's not done yet.

Personally, I'd like to see them re-use the Breath of the Wild engine (and keep the 'freedom' aspect) but do a twist on the format - perhaps a game inspired by Ocarina of Time, where you can switch between child and adult Link via the Temple of Time and experience two different - yet familiar - over-worlds (eg. like OoT, Hyrule could be somewhat 'darker' when playing as adult Link)

What I wouldn't want to see is a game with any kind of time limit/pressure - I like to just explore every nook and cranny at my own leisure and my own pace - so feeling in any way 'rushed' just wouldn't sit right with me (..whatever the opposite of 'speed running' is, that's how I play Zelda games!)
