@jump It's more that no announcement by this point confirms it'll be the case of no general Directs for a year. Announcement on September 2nd for airing on September 3rd was the last chance for one.
I think what'll happen is later today, Nintendo announces a Smash stream for tomorrow (the ARMS character stream was announced at 10pm BST the day before the stream) which at the same time would deconfirm the 3D Mario collection rumour.
This was the ARMS character stream announcement for a reminder:
4 million copies sold on Wii U. That's more than most Switch games will sell, even with the much bigger install base.
You need to take into account that not all console owners are exactly the same. The Wii U had a small total install base, but it contained most of the hardcore Nintendo fans, which means all of the core games sold really well. More than 50% of console owners bought Mario Kart 8, which is a higher proportion than nearly other game on any modern console.
@Grumblevolcano
I'm afraid you're right.
A new Smash character this year is almost guaranteed, so at least we have that to look forward to. If the big Holiday title is going to be a port or remaster, maybe Nintendo thinks that's not big enough to hold a Direct.
Thus, I think we'll get Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Smash DLC, and maybe 1 or 2 other games being either ports or smaller titles to hold us over until 2021.
@Shulkalot I mean at the same time the last general Direct closed out with the announcement of a remake of an older title so it's not like ports, remasters or remakes are something Nintendo would rule out of announcing during a main Direct.

True, but you're talking about a remaster of the best game of all time here. Xenoblade deserves its own Direct. Nintendo knows that... heck, everybody knows that. 😉
I think that there are 4 possible ways the mario remasters could go from most likely to least likely
1. 3D mario all stars releases with super mario 64 super mario sunshine and super mario galaxy 1&2 for 60 bucks and possibly a 3d world port later
2. 3D mario all stars releases with super mario 64 super mario sunshine and super mario galaxy 1 for 60 bucks and possibly a 3d workd port later
3. 3D mario all stars releases with super mario 64 super mario sunshine and super mario galaxy 1 for 60 bucks with 20 dollar galaxy dlc announced later with possibly a 3d world port later
4. (Extremely unlikely) we have a super mario 3d classics collection with super mario 64 and super mario sunshine for 60 bucks, a super mario galaxy collection with galaxy 1&2 for 60 bucks and possibly a super mario linear 3d collection? (I know its a dumb name) with 3d land and 3d world for 60 bucks.
@jump Sorry! I meant to say galaxy 2 dlc! It would have added galaxy 2 to the collection for 20 more bucks. Also do you think that if the 3d remasters are real that there will be a collectors edition or not?
You might as well throw my prediction of September 4th in the trash now guys. We would have heard something by now considering it would have been a major direct ..... SIGH
@jump he sugesting that Nintendo could add Super Mario Galaxy 2 as DLC or in a update, in the rumored 3D Mario Collection that Nintendo is suposed to release to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Mario Franchise.
We all know it is happening on 25th December guys. Nintendo will hold a Christmas Direct which will reveal all the games of 2020, including Paper Mario The Origami King, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Pikmin 3 Deluxe just to really troll everyone thinking they'd announce anything for next year

Yeah this was my guess too. Nintendo are really conservative about the value of their products. They almost never change their attitude on that. They don't do things like Xbox did with the Master Chief Collection, where you get an insane over-the-top amount of value for money.
The only way we get all 4 games in a single compilation is if they've made no changes to any of the games. Just rendered in 1080p 60fps and stuck on the same disc. Anything more than that, and they're not giving us 4 games.
So my guess is that it'll just be the 3 games in the compilation. Mario 64 will have had a moderate graphical improvement, Sunshine will have had a very minor upgrade, and Galaxy will have had no changes at all. That will be roughly worth $60. Then Galaxy 2 will be added as DLC 6 months later when they need to fill a gap in the calendar.
