Happy to be getting a much needed deep-dive into what makes Wonder truly unique, though I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me concerned for what it could mean for the possibility of a September general Direct this time round. I still have faith that we'll get one (we have gotten specific game Directs shortly before general Directs in the past) but my confidence is undeniably shaken this time round. Happy for the Mario faithful though; they're probably having the time of their LIVES right now.

There was a Xenoblade 3 and Splatoon 3 direct before the Sept. 13 full direct last year, right?

The Splatoon 3 Direct did take place a month prior to the September 2022 general Direct yes, but the Xenoblade 3 one happened nearly 3 months before said general Direct so I'm not entirely sure it's a perfect assumption to go off of myself.

They actually did have a Nintendo Direct Mini a week after the Xenoblade 3 direct. Despite it being a mini they had some really good announcements from what I remember.

Add me on switch if you like Xenoblade :)

@Vortexeo Ohhhhhh yeah, that was the one that had stuff like Pac-Man World, Mega Man Battle Network and Persona 3, 4 & 5 right? Genuinely completely forgot about that Mini myself, I suppose that very much boosts the chance of a general Direct (main or Mini depending on what they go for) occuring doesn't it? XD

@Fizza Yup that's the one! Honestly, it probably could've been a general direct if they included first-party stuff 😂. It was seriously one of the best direct minis I've ever seen.

It’s still weird that TOTK won’t be an easy guess to get right as something featured in the direct. ( not totally ruled out due to dlc.) Guess I can go back to predicting Twilight Princess and Wind Waker ports for every direct.

If I install WW and TP HD on my Wii U soon does that mean Nintendo will magically summon Switch ports of them into existence?

I don't think this necessarily affects the possibility of a full direct besides making first week of September the less likely week. Since Wonder was the big thing in the previous direct I had assumed they would call it out but wouldn't give a ton of screen time in a September direct. Having a longer direct just for Wonder makes sense, although I admit I'm a little worried about spoilers.

Fundamentally they still need a place to talk about NSO, some upcoming DLC like MK8, etc. And since they didn't have a mini direct, there will be plenty of third party stuff to announce. I imagine there will be fewer completely new first party announcements than the June direct, but some directs are like that.

@Croctopus I’ll install WW and TP without playing them, then Nintendo will rerelease them! I also have Uprising on my 3DS but I haven’t played it yet either

I'm thinking about all the upcoming 2023 1st party stuff:

  • Pikmin 1+2 physical - Don't need to say anything else about it, was released digitally in June
  • Detective Pikachu Returns - Could just be given a launch trailer
  • SMB Wonder - Getting its own Direct tomorrow
  • WarioWare Move It - Get It Together didn't start its promo cycle until 3 weeks before launch
  • Super Mario RPG - SMRPG is a remake so may not need to reveal much, also it releases in November
  • Scarlet/Violet Expansion Pass - Indigo Disk needs a release date but I don't see that part happening before November at the earliest given Teal Mask is on September 13th
  • Booster Course Pass Wave 6 - Current release pattern suggests November (March, July, November is a 4 month gap between each wave this year) though could be earlier if Tour is dying soon
  • Side Order - It isn't coming with tomorrow's update so earliest it'll come is November 30th
  • NSO - There's still games from the September 2022 and February 2023 Directs which haven't been released yet, we probably won't get another NSO roadmap until early 2024
  • amiibo - There have been plenty of amiibo with a shorter gap between release date announcement and release date, also Nintendo announced the Deep Cut amiibo on twitter so they may give the TotK and XC3 amiibo release dates there as well

So if there's a September general Direct, it's likely because of a shadow drop unannounced game (like how February and June had Metroid Prime Remastered and Pikmin 1+2 respectively). Between the absence of Indie World in August and the SMB Wonder Direct tomorrow, I'm leaning towards September being Indie World and either there being a Partner Showcase in September or a general Direct around October 11th/12th.

Nintendo Directs are adverts. I know us affectionados consider them as infomation lol, but I don't get why they wouldn't still want to advertise their wares for the holiday season. They still want to sell Switches. Sure Mario Wonder will shift units, but this would be like putting all their eggs in one basket. I'm still optimistic that we get a September Direct. But to be fair, I can't wait for the Mario one

But tomorrow will be a Direct for Super Mario Wonder, right?

No good deed
Will I do
AGAIN...!!!

GrailUK

@Anti-Matter Yep. Just Wonder by the looks. So no expecting Switch 2 news lol.

Yeah I don't think this rules out a general direct just yet.

In fact it would be pretty shocking if there wasn't one in September for the first time in what, 7 years? (bar 2020)
Clearly Wonder is Nintendo's focus at the moment hence why they've given it's own 15 minute presentation as opposed to squeezing 3 or 4 minutes in the middle of a normal direct.

With that happening tomorrow and (most likely) and a standard presentation next month, this should mean we're getting the best of both worlds!

There is one thing that would renew my hope in a September general Direct, if they announced in the SMB Wonder Direct that SMB Wonder is playable at Nintendo Live. Naturally in that outcome, SMB Wonder news would have to happen before Nintendo Live but I don't get why they'd announce it being playable at the event the day before the event starts.

I personally think this is Nintendo getting ahead of the 'not my Mario' brigade after Charles Martinet stepped down from the voice role. I think he will feature alongside Mr Miyamoto in this Direct, maybe have a tribute section of his games and then both have a looking forward to the future vibe. I think they mentioned something had been recorded when they announced him becoming Mario Ambassasor (best job title ever (tm).) When Looney Toons and Scooby Doo lost their voice actors, it was a little jarring. So I would imagine there is an elelment of that going on. Last thing Nintendo wants is for everyone to go off Mario lol.

Honestly a September direct doesn't need much 'new' from Nintendo itself; we've definitely had directs which mainly talked about DLC or already announced games at least in terms of first party. I'm sure there will be a 2024 game or two slipped in we don't know about (my guess is a Kirby related game), but not necessarily a bunch.

However, a general direct does need a big announcement or trailer at the end. Does anyone have a list of all the big announcements/trailers at the end of general directs? I'm trying to remember how exciting they have to be. I don't think they would do Wonder again. An actual trailer of the Peach game would be big enough but personally I don't think they will because it could be a distraction from Wonder. Obviously Tears of the Kingdom DLC announcement would be big enough if it is coming next year. What else? What is the hype level bar for the final thing in directs. 🤔

@FishyS For the Switch era, the Direct closer was:

  • April 2017 - Splatoon 2 Salmon Run
  • June 2017 - Mario Odyssey (the trailer with the T-Rex)
  • September 2017 - Detailed look at Mario Odyssey
  • March 2018 - Splatoon 2 (update and Octo Expansion) + Inklings in Smash
  • June 2018 - Detailed look at Smash Ultimate (the 2nd half of the Direct was this)
  • September 2018 - Isabelle in Smash Ultimate + new Animal Crossing tease
  • February 2019 - Astral Chain + Link's Awakening
  • June 2019 - Banjo in Smash Ultimate + TotK
  • September 2019 - Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
  • February 2021 - Splatoon 3
  • June 2021 - TotK
  • September 2021 - Bayonetta 3 (first appearance since initial 2017 reveal)
  • February 2022 - MK8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass + Xenoblade Chronicles 3
  • September 2022 - TotK
  • February 2023 - TotK
  • June 2023 - SMB Wonder

@Grumblevolcano So Metroid Prime 4 next, then. DAMMIT, I said I wasn't going to predict Metroid Prime 4 this time. Sorry everyone, I jinxed it.

@Grumblevolcano That's quite an interesting list actually

@GrailUK I mean, it is the last holdout of big Switch announcements that we know about. From @Grumblevolcano's list, we can see that there is a precedent for DLC being the "Last Thing." That leaves the Splatoon 3 DLC or a TOTK DLC announcement as possible closers. Beyond that, maybe a reveal for a title for next May? Kid Icarus Uprising Remaster?
