Topic: My Joy con L button always breaks

I came to these forums for advice. Ever since I got my Switch in Christmas of 2021, I have owned and used two different sets of joy cons, and both sets’ L buttons have stopped working. The buttons still click, but the console doesn’t seem to detect that the button is being pressed. My family and I are never violent with the controllers and are always gentle with them. There was one time a month ago when the L button randomly started working again on my second pair for about a week, but it has not worked since. Most of my games are still playable without the L button, but some games, like Breath of the wild, are literally impossible to make significant progress in without the use of runes (triggered with the L button). Is it normal to go through the button’s durability this quickly? Or is there something I’m doing that’s making them break? If anyone has any useful information on the matter, it would be appreciated.

@Bananaflavored Can you take them back? If it just stopped working without warning.

@Bananaflavored Well, if you contacted nintendo, they'll start with basic troubleshooting. They'll ask if you're console is updated. And they'll ask if your controllers are updated. Controllers/joycons have to be attached or plugged-in with the usb cable to receive their update.

It's odd that the L button stopped working on two sets of joycons. Since your console is new-ish, I'm hoping updating your controllers will solve your issue. If it doesn't, then it may indicate something else is going on. (if you've done this stuff already, disregard)

If you weren't aware yet, Nintendo's support page is an impressively good resource for troubleshooting stuff.

I’d do that first and if it still doesn’t work you could maybe send them into Nintendo for repairs. I know they at least fix joy con drift, I dunno about other issues. It would be worth a shot though, plus it’s usually free. Also, since your switch/ controllers are pretty new I’d assume they’d either replace them for free or fix them, especially if youve been careful.

If you are responding to me in forums or a comment I would much appreciate it if you quoted or tagged me in your responses so I can see it and respond. Otherwise I usually can’t tell that you’ve replied. Thanks!

@Bananaflavored You should contact the retailer the joy-con was bought from, or Nintendo.

It's not normal for such a problem to occur, let alone on multiple joy-con.

Somewhere in the System menu there is a controller 'Test Input Devices' option that lets you confirm all the controller inputs are working correctly. Test them out using that next time you encounter the fault.

If they are still in warranty contact Nintendo or the place you bought it from to replace them.

@Bananaflavored Since your Switch is less than 60 days old, returning and exhcanging the joycons at the retailer would be your quickest option, if repair/replacement is needed, and if the retailer OKs it.

Otherwise, warranty for Nintendo hardware has been two years (if I remember right). However, Nintendo goes the extra mile, and they still honor controller warranty well beyond two years, if your hardware isn't abused. In fact, four years after Switch launched, some users here sent in their joycons to have drift fixed, and nintnedo sent them new controllers. I don't know how long they'll keep doing that, but that's what they've been doing here in the US.
