@DomGC They do stay more relevant that way but I have always found easier to just start heavily modifying the ones that will stay with me for a long time as it takes time and resources that I'm a bit lazy to gather over and over. That being said your method is definitely a viable option for those that want to keep their monsties.
@Ralizah Glad to see that you are finally enjoying the combat a little bit. Navirou could definitely disappear or at least appear much less in future entries and most people will be indifferent or even happy about it haha. Personally, as annoying as it is I find it kinda endearing. I don't even mind it's looks, although I do dislike that it has hands with fingers instead of paws. His English voice is really annoying too.
@theepiktorcoal Really? I didn't notice those changes from the first game, thanks for pointing them out. Yeah, I also try to have monsters with useful abilities, unfortunately that makes me limit myself to some monsters that I don't enjoy as much as others.
@JasonH I'm also having tons of fun. It's really nice to see a game living up to the hype and engaging me in such a way that I'm almost using mily entire free time on it haha. I even played until late hours without noticing these couple days. I'm planning to get Rise (loved the demo) since I had a great time with 4U, just as soon as there's a good discount since I have spent way too much these months.
@roy130390 I mean, he (Navirou) isn't the worst thing in the world. It's more like... Stories 2 does a great job of ditching the "kid game" feel of the original, and feels like a premium, high-quality JRPG, but you still have this annoying vestigial mascot character from the previous entry that seems to add nothing to the experience. I wish they'd either develop him and make him more integral to the story or have him stop constantly calling attention to himself. Either is fine with me.
And yeah, the combat is mostly working for me now. I do like switching out weapons in order to find out what works best against individual monsters, and using specific skills or weapon types on specific body parts in order to break them. And the more traditional MH elements have translated well. They may try to draw this distinction between Riders and Hunters, but, as far as I can tell, riders are just hunters who have learned to weaponize monsters, as I'm still killing monsters for parts for bigger and better weapon and armor sets.
I haven't really unlocked anything regarding gene manipulation yet, and haven't really needed to use skills at all, so I'm hoping those both become bigger parts of the game as it goes on. For the moment, though, what's here keeps battles from feeling like tedious exercises in menu manipulation, so I do actually look forward to battles now, which is enough for me, even if the game never develops an actively amazing battle system like in Bravely Default or SMT IV: Apocalypse. We'll see.
And yeah, definitely get Rise at some point. Awesome game. Also the first one I've spent major time with since 4U (Generations didn't do much for me, unfortunately, and I just can't seem to get into the home console entries), and it feels like it expands on some of the best ideas from that game, like a more thrilling mounting mechanic and extremely dense and vertical level design.
In order to transfer Genes that unlock at higher levels, it requires leveling up your extra monsters to unlock the genes in order to make the transfer. What is the best approach for this? Just wait until you can’t hold any more in your stable, then swap out 4 of the 5 monsters and go battle for a bit to level them up, rinse and repeat? That feels like an awful lot of grinding extra monsters. I really wish the game would let you transfer locked genes, but they’d still have to be unlocked via level on the monster they were transferred to.
But ya, any advice on how to best approach this without spending too much time leveling up 100 extra monsters?

@JaxonH after the third area you unlock expeditions where you can send teams to grab itens and level up (like in xenoblade Chronicles 2). I have been using it to level up monsters not in the party
@Ralizah The ability to change weapons definitely was a major upgrade as simple as it seems. I really recommend you fighting the Royal Monsters (the ones sleeping that alert Navirou) as soon as possible (I've been fighting them before moving to new areas in the story) to get the best monsters and also a good challenge to enjoy the battle system even more. Said monsters also don't break the game if you get them or anything so you can enjoy a powerful monster without worrying that they'll make your team obsolete or the game too easy as each area seems to escalate in level and monster types properly.
I'll definitely get Rise, probably before the end of the year depending on how much money I have haha. That and TWEWY sequel will be the last major games that I need this year (Metroid Dread is already pre-ordered). Thanks for the recommendation.
I agree completely about Navirou by the way.
@JasonH Sorry for the late response. Yeah, unlocking expeditions are the best way to solve that. I saved most of my monsters until that point and just channeled a few to improve minor aspects.
@roy130390 Royal monsters... I don't know if I've encountered anything like that. Are they specialized quests, or do you just stumble across them? Because I recall a side-quest where I had to defeat a monster that was said to be more difficult than others or something in the first area.
No interest in SMT V or Advance Wars?
I really need to get around to trying the Neo: TWEWY demo. Just feels like I always have said something else going on instead.
@Ralizah Yup, you stumble across them and they are always sleeping (at least the ones I have seen). The first one is a Tigrex in Harzgai Hill, which is close to Rutoh village. Remember to throw a Paint ball to it when it's about to be defeated for better chances of retreating to it's den.
Oh, I definitely have an interest in both. I enjoyed SMT soundtrack when I checked it on YouTube and they have told me that they are challenging RPGs, which I love about the Etryan Odyssey games. Advance Wars was recommended to me since I had the GBA because I played the Fire emblem games, but for some reason I never played one. Now that Wayforward is involved I have no reason to skip that one.
I also haven't played Neo TWEWY demo, but that's because I haven't played the Epilogue. TWEWY is one of my favourite games and, since I have heard mixed feelings about that last chapter, I've been hesitant to play it as I really don't want them to ruin the story by extending it and complicating it too much like Kingdom Hearts (maybe that's just me). Having said that the trailers look so good that I think I'll risk it once I finish with Stories 2.
@roy130390 Interesting. Once I unlock the Rite I think I'll be focusing on side content, because the second area of the game seems to be hiding a number of secrets. Thanks for letting me know.
Etrian Odyssey was my 'gateway drug' to Atlus games. I loved the games on the DS years before I'd even heard of MegaTen. As with the Etrian games, recent SMTs are becoming more accessible via difficulty settings and QoL improvements, but they're still extremely well-designed JRPGs.
As for AW games, they're interesting, because, aside from the obvious difference in theme (modern-ish military vs fantasy), they're lacking almost entirely in the RPG elements that have become more prominent in Fire Emblem. Pure tactics. That makes them pretty distinct from most other games in the genre, and it's why I'm so happy they're getting 'rebooted' by WayForward (who'll do a good job, I think; while they clearly take on a lot of licensed stuff just to pay the bills, they seem to put extra care into series with a storied history).
I've actually never played TWEWY, which is another hesitation of mine, I guess, because I'm not sure if Neo is going to better experienced as a sequel than as a standalone thing.
Finally got to sit down and play the game. It's pretty good so far. I really enjoy the gameplay loop, and the battle system. It's incredibly satisfying to fell monsters in the game, and it's even more satisfying to do the side quests scattered about the world as well.
The lag is annoying, but it's not that bad honestly. Other than the town in the forest, most of the areas chug, but not at an intolerable rate. Don't know how it functions in TV mode, but in handheld, it's honestly pretty alright.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
With regard to the royal monsters, save scumming them is definitely the way to go. I usually get them to retreat, walk back to a catavan stand to save and then walk into the dens. Seeing as they are longer battles than normal, I definitely want to at least get a golden egg for the effort .
I'm definitely starting to notice the difficulty ramping up as I'm going along. I'm in the Lamure region and enemies are using way more status attacks now
@Ralizah
Same happened to me, except, it would have been worse without Alwin. He would have triple carted me instead, and without Alwin there to heal people up, it would only be even more difficult.
You can level your allies up though, and even given them nutriments

Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)

Just got to the credits. It was perhaps a tad too easy considering I just blitzed through the back half of the game with one monster and no grinding but aside from that it was still pretty fun.
@Ralizah Bow has Absolute Evasion, which is a life saver when there's inminent heavy damage coming at you. I don't use sword and shield but I think there's also some kind of counters with those. I think that Gunlance also has defensive options but I haven't used that either. You can also buff party's defense and heal them with the horn so maybe one of those alternatives suits you.
Oh, by the way Tigrex has a "running in the 90s" ability, so simple yet so functional and fun, you'll see what I mean.😛
@alpacatears Good advice, I also do that. I knew that I forgot something haha. Golden eggs is definitely the way to go, finding rainbow eggs in those type of dens can be way too tedious.
@BenAV Dude, that was really fast . Will you try PvP?
Oh yes, fusing these monsters is great. If there's PVP multiplayer, I feel like the eugenics simulator buried in here is going to lead to a lot of depth.
@roy130390@JaxonH@Balta666 K, so mainly just specialized skills. That's fine. I assume there's no way to tell my AI partner to defend?
