That’s great. A year from now when you’re a diehard fan with all the merch and Rathalos plushies on your couch, don’t say I didn’t warn you 😁

Monster Hunter is the only character I care about getting in to Smash Bros. And it deserves it. If Smash is a celebration of gaming, how can you do that without paying homage to Monster Hunter? It just doesn’t feel complete without it. And the wirebug would make a perfect Up B recovery.

Lol, I have already been looking for ways to import that giant Palamute plushie from Japan but so far without success. Probably too early for that. Hopefully it gets properly released in Europe as well.

Has NintendoLife even reported on the footage shown yesterday for Rise

They haven't. I wonder if Nintendo Life realizes how big Monster Hunter Rise will be on Switch.
Same with GameXplain: all about Hyrule Warriors, nothing about Monster Hunter Rise.

JaxonH

Exactly.

Nobody has reported on it. Everything is about Hyrule Warriors. GameXplain with 5 videos in a row for Hyrule Warriors. But the Monster Hunter footage was WAY more newsworthy, to me.

Hyrule Warriors won’t even break a few million sold. Monster Hunter Rise is way bigger. And the news we got from the video is way more meaningful.

Seems maps might be back? What other explanation is there for having the map assigned to the radial menu? I’m down with this. It means high rank will drop you in the middle of an area without a map, and your knowledge of the area will be tested. Always loved that aspect. Not that this is confirmation- maybe it toggles the map on and off? Nah, they’d just have the button that magnifies it do that, if that were the case. So ya, get ready for maps to return!

I think GameXplain isn't a huge MH fan, no idea about NintendoLife...

Anyways I follow GajinHunter and Arrekz for MH stuff.

GameXplain is only interested in Nintendo 1st party and Sony 1st party. Everything else they basically ignore.

@AlexOlney is a huge MH fan here at NinendoLife though. I remember him doing a video with Arreks on MHGU when it released, speculating on a future MH title for Switch. Surprised we don’t see him in this thread talking about MH. Probably too busy writing for the site and making videos to daydream about MH Rise day and night like we are

@JaxonH The only time GameXplain cover something Sony related is if it concerns a franchise like Kingdom Hearts, Persona, Resident Evil or Final Fantasy, which are coincidentally also franchises that have established presences on Nintendo systems

They're practically 96% Nintendo and they never talk about Sony or Xbox otherwise.

Which is a shame because there have been times when it feels like GameXplain have nothing to talk about and they waste their time digging through every single little detail the last Nintendo game had or they make endless videos analyzing an upcoming first party Nintendo game.

I'm of the believe that if they expanded their horizons a bit, even if it were just third party Nintendo exclusives like Monster Hunter Rise, they would gain much more traction and their channel would grow exponentially.

@Rexenoboy I honestly want to see more PlayStation centric content from them. Jon Cartwright by himself seems massively enthusastic about PlayStation games over on his Twitter, especially FromSoftware titles like Bloodborne or even when talking about Demon's Souls

Even if it's not focused specifically on first party Sony games, even stuff like covering third party exclusives would add a bit of diversity to their channel's content

They cranked out like half a dozen videos on Last of Us 2, they cover Crash 4 every chance they get (which, Crash isn’t technically 1st party but used to be), they’ve got multiple Danganronpa videos up which is console exclusive to Sony, Tony Hawk... Obviously not as much of a focus on PS as Nintendo because it’s a Nintendo centric channel. But for being a Nintendo centric channel they sure do cover a lot of non-Nintendo stuff. Which, personally I’d prefer they not cover, simply because I have little interest in PS. I mean, I own a PS4 Pro and Vita but, I don’t really feel strongly toward their games and would prefer just watching a PS-centric channel if/when I want PS info. Even PC, a which I’m very interested in as a PC gamer, it’s just not what I go to their channel for. Or at least, if they’re going to cover other stuff, fine, just so long as they’re covering all the Nintendo stuff too, which they’re not doing. If they would thoroughly provide coverage to stuff like MH Rise, and Ori Will of the Wisps, etc, and still have time for more stuff, then sure, go for it. I just dislike how they cover non-Nintendo news while ignoring megaton Nintendo news at the same time.

Btw Jon Cartwright doesn’t work at GameXplain anymore. Actually took a job with NintendoLife, surprisingly.

@Rexenoboy
I agree. Be it Monster Hunter Rise, Ori Will of the Wisps, Hades... there’s tons of excellent Switch games they basically treat as non-newsworthy. Meanwhile, Kirby Fighter 2 videos, a dozen Mario 3D Collection videos, half a dozen Hyrule Warriors videos... it would be fine if they weren’t focusing on 1st party to the exclusion of everything else. They seem to have more 3rd party videos of PS games than they do 3rd party Switch games.

Btw, you guys are going to need to choose one of the 14 weapon types and master it. Each weapon is insanely deep with complex move sets. Just mastering 1 weapon is a handful. But I don’t want to make it sound too hard because just watching a tutorial is usually enough to get a good grasp. After that it’s just practice.

I don’t know which weapon is going to be the one that you like. You just have to try them out and see which one clicks. But I do want to share a tutorial for the charge blade, which is my weapon of choice, or at least, it was for MHGU and MH World. I used Insect Glaive in MH4U, and used Longsword, Hunting Horn and Dual Blades in MH3U. Also had a nice 50 hr span with Heavy Bowgun in MHGU, just to test out gunning.

This is just a recommendation to show a good example of what a single weapon can do. And if you’re interested it might be good to watch the tutorial and start learning the weapon before you play the game. So, ya, here’s Gaijin Hunter’s charge blade tutorial for MH World (which, a few advanced moves might change in Rise, and there will be wirebug attacks exclusive to that game, but the vast majority of this should be applicable since each weapon’s core move set largely goes unchanged from game to game)

@Joeynator3000
I don’t recall hearing anything about that. I imagine more info will be shared later for Stories 2, and provably after Rise releases.

I always go for close combat, so the gunning weapons are already out. I also like to be able to take a hit, manage aggro and be the tank of the group, is there a weapon class suitable for this kind of playstyle?

@Rexenoboy
So, as for melee weapons, which I myself prefer, there are 11 (the 3 ranged weapons are bow, light bowgun and heavy Bowgun)

Sword and Shield One sword and a shield. Only weapon that lets you scroll and use items with weapon drawn. It’s the weapon a lot of new players gravitate towards because it seems familiar but it’s very unpopular within the Fanbase, And personally I don’t like it that much. Although they have buffed it in recent games where you can apply oils to your sword. The shield is also not able to block really heavy attacks from bigger monsters. Only smaller attacks.

Lance A lance with huge shield. You can block a lot more than Sword and Shield can, but your movement is really slow. Lance is for those who like to guard, and poke when they see an opening. There are invincibility frames during the back hop, and in past games you could get Evasion+3 and chain 3 back hops together with full invincibility the whole time. Pretty sure you can’t do that anymore but there is still those who do guard lancing and those who do evade lancing. I spent a good bit of time with the Lance and it’s very different. It’s not my first choice but it’s really fun.

Gunlance Very similar to the lance, in fact it looks nearly identical, but the gunlance itself is a gun, and can do these awesome charge attacks shooting Wyvern Fire. I’ve never used the weapon myself but a lot of people seem to love it. Very unique weapon. I can only assume there are also those who do guard gunlancing and evade gunlancing.

Greatsword A really, really big sword. Your movement is slower but your attacks are incredibly powerful. Usually this weapon is best reserved for more experienced hunters due to the slow movement. You have to be really good at timing because of the longer animations when attacking. But the sword is so big, it can also serve as a shield. Not as good as lance shield or gunlance shield, but at least as good as the smaller shield from Sword and Shield. Can block smaller attacks with your greatsword. Really flashy charge attacks.

Longsword The best beginner weapon imo, and very popular. Easier to learn than other weapons, but it’s still incredibly complex. You can build up your spirit gauge to three levels and do special attacks with them. The long sword is great for cutting off tails because of the overhead strike which has insane reach. If you want to cut tails that are really high in the air such as the pink rathian, Longsword is the only way to roll

Dual Blades A very popular weapon that focuses on speed at the cost of range. You won’t be able to chop off tails that are higher in the air, but you can do crazy damage with dual blades. They are so fast and you get a demon mode but you can activate which slowly drains your stamina but lets you dash with your dual blades drawn, and do insane combos. The one thing you have to watch out for is the fact that the weapon will need to be sharpened more frequently because you’re attacking more quickly and dulling the blades faster than most other weapons.

Charge Blade One of two weapons that morph into an axe. Incredibly complex and versatile. It normally looks like a sword and shield, but can morph into a huge axe. As you attack you will build up phials, which you have 5 of, and there’s a special move to store the power you build up into the phials. Then when you are in axe mode, you can expend the phials for super powerful attacks. You can also expend them to get a special guard up buff that lets you block virtually anything. It’s crazy awesome. Charge blade remains incredibly popular ever since MH4U where it was first introduced.

Switch Axe The other weapon that can morph into an axe. Normally it looks like a really big sword, but it can morph into a really big axe. Also uses a phial system like charge blade. I’ve used this weapon some and I really like it. But I do prefer charge blade, personally. Switch axe was particularly popular in MH3U, where it first debuted as a new weapon.

Hammer A blunt weapon that cannot sever appendages like tails like the blades weapons that do cutting damage, but it can break heads and horns, which cutting weapons cannot do. Hammer is a bit slower, like the great sword and hunting horn, but it’s really powerful. Basically the blunt version of a great sword.

Hunting Horn Giant club like weapon that’s also a musical horn instrument. It works kind of like a hammer with slower moves and blunt impact damage, but every swing, every type of attack, plays a different color note. If you string together three or four notes that make a specific song, you can then hit a button which plays the melody for that song and gives you and everybody in the area a specific buff. Horn users are all about dealing damage strategically to line up songs, then play the songs to give attack up bonuses or health or earplugs to protect from roars, etc. requires a certain level of skill to learn the songs and every horn has a different list of songs but horn users are among the most beloved in multiplayer, because they are constantly giving buffs to the whole team. If you want everyone to love you in multiplayer, learn the hunting horn.

Insect Glaive One of the most unique weapons in the game, the Glaive is like a bow, or rod, that is accompanied by a large flying insect called a “kinsect” which rests on your arm. You can send the kinsect out and it will fly in a straight line wherever you send it- if it hits the monster it will collect one of three different buffs- red for power, yellow for something, white for speed (could have that mixed up). It depends what part of the monster you hit, to determine which color you get. Usually the belly of the monster is where you get the yellow from. As soon as the kinsect hits the monster it flies back to you and gives you the buff, which lasts for about a minute. If you collect two buffs you get a compounding effect, and if you get all three at the same time you go into this ultra mode where your weapon blinks different colors and your attacks are like twice as fast as normal, you can do crazy combos, etc, and later in the game you can get certain weapons that have kinsect buffs that last twice as long. I really enjoyed my time with this weapon in MH4U. But, it can get aggravating having to constantly worry about sending the kinsect out to collect buffs. Usually because the yellow was so hard to obtain, I would get that from a small monster on my way to find the large monster (small monsters also give a certain color buff, so it’s an easy way to at least get one color before you start the fight). Insect glaive also lets you pogo bounce high into the air, and back when it was first introduced it was the one weapon that was focused on mounting the monster because you could spring into the air and attack to do mount damage. But now with wirebugs all weapons will be viable for mounting, though the insect glaive, in combination with wirebugs, will be INSANE. It has one of the coolest move sets in the game and I highly suggest you check this one out for yourself in a video. Insect Glaive requires a certain type of approach, but was crazy popular alongside charge blade back in MH4U when it first debuted.

Training Room
Best of all, there’s a training room in the game where you can equip any of the 14 starter weapons they give you, and you can practice to your heart’s content without any stress or time limits. I like to watch the tutorials and practice the moves as he explains them.

Reply
MH is all about not getting hit, rather than tanking hits. At least for most weapon classes. Unless you are guarding with a sufficient shield and guard up skill, all attacks will knock you down or send you flying. There is no tanking hits in this game. If you want to be able to withstand a hit without dodging, then lance or gunlance might be for you. You move very slowly and you are not meant to dodge (unless going with an evade lance build). You’re meant to use your shield. Even the Lance can’t block certain attacks, and that’s why there are certain skills in the game like guard up and guard +1 and guard +2. Later in the game if you have all of the guarding skills you will be able to block pretty much any attack in the game except for some super mega one hit kill attacks from the endgame monsters, which nothing can block.

So I would choose between the Lance and the gunlance. Or, perhaps even charge blade which DOES have a shield in sword mode and which CAN use your phial energy to give Guard Up buffs. But at least check out one video of a weapon that doesn’t focus on guarding, like the long sword. Good to get a balanced perspective of how the two groups of weapons differ.

The palamutes look pretty cool. I'm ready to ditch those creepy bipedal cats forever.

So I've not been following news on this game too closely, but I recall something about only being able to carry three wirebugs at a time? So, realistically, usage of that feature would be VERY limited per map.

Dude, you're awesome for taking your time to give us so much information!

I took a quick look at some of the weapon tutorials Gajinhunter and Arekkz have made and so far the Charge Blade really stands out. I can see why you love it so much. The two lance weapons aren't really my thing and I'm not really into blunt weapons either, so the Hunting Horn and Hammer are also out. The Insect Glaive, while very cool, seems a bit too difficult to start out with but I'll definitely give that one a try. The Switch Axe also drew my attention for being a very cool and versatile weapon.

I guess I have my first three weapon classes all sorted: Charge Blade, Switch Axe and Insect Glaive. They all look very fun, cool and unique.

You get two wirebugs that recharge on a cool down timer which varies by move and recharges much more slowly in combat. A third wirebug can be obtained within the map via endemic life, but it’s only temporary and expended once used.

The cool downs ensure wirebugs can be used pretty often when not in combat. Only takes about 5-10 seconds for the cool down. So traversing with wirebugs has a lot of potential. But combat with wirebugs is more limited, as the cool downs are significantly longer.

Surprised you don’t like the palicos! I love the felynes. Especially their personalities. But the palamutes are great too. Did you see how they cover their ears during a roar in that gif posted on the previous page? Too adorable for words 😁

Besides wirebug stuff, I hope the Gunlunce itself gets a few new moves or something. I think in World the only thing it got was...that exploding stick that you jam into the monster. (I forget the name. xD)

But yeah, Gunlance is one of my favorites, I do like the new stuff World gave the Glaive and that's already confirmed to be in Rise. So I'm good to go with that weapon. -w-

Now if only Prowler would return. TwT (...and I guess now Growler for the puppers. lol)
