I've read enough articles to, mostly, conclude the terrible reality, but I want to make sure I've exhausted all avenues.
We bought the new Tears of the Kingdom switch today, signed up our kids under my Family account and transferred their usernames to the new model. I ASSUMED that meant save data as well, but I found out differently.
So have I managed to completely reset everyone's game progress or is there any chance of recovering the save data?
Hi, if they were on your family plan, you should be able to download your cloud saves for most games. Open settings, scroll down to save data, then save data cloud. Next go to "Save data not on this console. Here it should show any saves that are stored in the cloud that aren't on your system. Clicking one will give you the option to download it. It will also ask if you would like to enable automatic save downloads. Note, there are some games that do not support cloud saves, such as the Pokemon games. For these you would have to manually transfer that data from the original system
@UnMayor Did your kids have Nintendo Switch Online on their accounts on their original Switch console? If so then yes, as long as they had Cloud Saves activated on their profiles. If not then you might be out of luck...
@UnMayor I would have to ask you several questions to establish exactly what happened, and that's painful process in a forum. Your best & quickest way to a solution is to contact Nintendo Support's phone line to sort things out, and they'll be able to see your account, in case that helps.
Thanks for quick replies folks!
Well, MUCH to my surprise and relief, they all did transfer! Which I really find odd as I had not established a family plan until just a few minutes prior to the transfer. Unless it's only going to affect the games that do support cloud save, which will be found out eventually, but right now the big ticket game is Zelda. They all have many hours in that, and it picked right up where they left off.
I've lost high level characters before, and THAT is not a life challenge I want my kids to experience. Just yet anyways.....
If your plan had your defaults set to save to cloud it would do so right away. Only some games like ACNH won't do this but there are a few I found out that requires full transfer no cloud to move the game over. I got Family plan for all of us since the other Switch isn't here but all the accounts have Cloud save and some had to do full transfer of saved data but after that it's easy now that Cloud can save and update and if they need to redownload DLC they can use my other secondary to redownload them again.
@UnMayor You don't need an NSO sub to do a user transfer. The regular way to transfer requires you to have two consoles (the target & source), and the switch user needs to be linked to a nintendo account. The switch won't let you transfer a user if the user isn't linked to a nintendo account. Essentially, the transfer is done via local wireless/bluetooth between the two consoles.
The NSO sub offers cloud save backup in case you lost your switch. The cloud save system allows access to redownload the save data for most games. (a few online games with deep progression systems don't have cloud save back up. Nintendo support has a page with a list of the games that are not supported.)
