@Jjj0hnn I prefer shenmooey. I haven't played the game yet, but do have it on PS4, is there a spoiler free explanation for what the word Shenmue means?
@GrailUK "Bross" is most definitely NOT the right sound. The abbreviation for brothers is bros, as in snows, toes, goes, woes, shows.
@gcunit I actually was serious, since I thought the name was both a play on them being brothers, and on their last name, Goss, but I stand corrected.
@Jjj0hnn There's no prolonged 'ooo' in there: It's Japanese, not a cow. It's pronounced Shen-Muu (which is also how the katekana characters are phonetically written in Japanese). Much like Yu-Gi-Oh is not pronounced as Yoo-Gee-Ow. That's just Americanizing/Westernizing it...
And straight from the source:
So how should I pronounce "muu" then? While your being picky about it, I would suggest bros in mario bros should not be pronounced bros as in toes etc. It is simply shorthand for brothers, as was used in many company names in years gone by. It should be pronounced "brothers" @ThanosReXXX
@Jjj0hnn Not being picky, just factual, no offense. It's simple: you should pronounce it like ''uu' or 'ue' but not as 'oo', or a prolonged version of that. Just listen to how they pronounce it in the second video. That doesn't sound like a cow mooing at all. Japanese pronunciation is more short and concise.
Native English speakers tend to phonetically add letters or prolong tones of foreign words, where none of that is necessary. As an example, just take the name of developer Yu Suzuki, the last name of which, is also pretty well-known as a vehicle manufacturer:
No one with a decent enough knowledge of the original language, or even simpler: with a good set of ears, would pronounce the name as "Soozookee", or the first name of the man as "You".
It's Yu, which can be pronounced with two u's, or with a 'uh'.
There's so many words where Western people simply replace the original sound with 'oo', but that doesn't mean, that just because a lot of people do it, that it's the correct way of saying it.
Agreed on the meaning of bros, obviously, but the original question was how to pronounce what was written, not what it means. Yes, it means brothers, but it is pronounced bros, and that does indeed sound like toes, or any other similar sounding word, that has been mentioned by me as well as by a couple of others.
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
Sorry dude it's never pronounced bros as in toes by anyone ever. It's brothers. You don't pronounce shorthand as it's written, that's just silly. I'm off to play ShenMooo I think that's something better to doo don't yoo? @ThanosReXXX
I'm not your dude, and nobody I know says Smash Brothers.
It's officially brothers, yes, but I already agreed with you on that part, so that's not even a discussion, but bros is just slang/pop culture language. Much like people greeting each other with 'Yo, bro, how' you doing?' Or should we also fully pronounce that?
That's what I thought...
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
@ThanosReXXX Not disputing you at all but in my head I've only ever pronounced it Smash Brothers and Smash Bross; never Smash Broes. First time I heard it pronounced as Broes was one of Alex's videos I think, and I just assumed he was doing it jokingly.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@GrailUK Bros as in plural of brother, isn't written with an apostrophe in between.
The simplest, and hopefully allowed example of that, which I could give you, is the time-honored street saying of "bros before hoes"...
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
@gcunit I can understand and respect how people have learned/grown accustomed to a certain word and its pronunciation, but all I was doing, is giving the formal, or rather street-official version of the word.
But by now, the debate in general is beginning to show signs of how we should pronounce 'Sega', but we'd better leave that one alone...
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
@GrailUK Mind you, I don't agree with that saying at all (since I don't like the derogatory labeling of women), not even if it is used jokingly, but it was the simplest example I could come up with at such a short notice...
@ThanosReXXX I get ya...but ya have to concede the folk that use that expression are hardly the brains of the world lol. It's pretty obvious how they deduced the incorrect pronounciation lol.
