All I know is even Picross S is higher than FIFA, a fully fledged AAA game.
I was sure this game would do infinitely better than past versions on Wii U or 3DS, but right now I'm thinking it'll be lucky to even cross 100,000 units sold. Maybe that's better than past versions, Idk, but it's unfortunate.
NBA 2k18 got a bad rap by all the issues it was plagued with which turns people off yet the big issues were all just patched out. So we may be in a situation where ultimately it's a great game but those first two weeks kill it. And with FIFA 18, it was a great game from day one but the media seem to want to kill it and focus only on what it doesn't have versus PS4/X1 rather than focus on how much better it is than PS3/360.

It would seem that FIFA was limited in EU for retail so being 3rd makes sense as people might not want to wait. Plus with a memory space issue many might not want to purchase a full retail game nearly as much as in the past. I for one won't be dl'ing any retail games I can purchase at the store.

@JaxonH its hard to justify full price for a game missing modes/features the other versions have. it happens often enough to nintendo and it's not fair. It may be an EA thing or nintendo issue but it doesn't convince me to buy it at full price. I will be in the camp that waits for a sale. This game should really be $40 that and i despise micro-transactions which i hear this game has them in spades. I know its a fact of gaming but it really shouldn't be. (-_-)

This is a very good game of football. Just played Leicester at Home as MUFC. Went with 3 at the back to combat their quick front 2. Bad decision, hardly threatened them at all, then conceded a soft penalty on 77 minutes which Vardy scored. I hit the post in the last minute but lost 1-0, just about resisting the temptation to launch my Pro Controller across the room
How do PS4 and XB1 owners cope with buying games that have better graphics, mods, free online, more control options on high-end PC? They don't think they're entitled to parity with more powerful systems, yet some Switch owners seem to think they are.
I started gaming on an Amstrad CPC 30 years ago, playing a football game as it happens. I had a great time with conversions of games like Chase HQ, Shinobi and KLAX. Other systems had better versions of those games but I didn't have those systems. At the age of 10 I was able to assess those games solely as CPC games in relation to other CPC games and enjoy them without feeling entitled to what owners of other systems had. Yet some Switch owners are incapable of that.
The Switch is less powerful than PS4 so it gets a less technically-advanced version.
I'm not the cleverest guy in the room but I can see that the Devs will have been working under time constraints and to get full feature parity would have meant porting an entire engine over to a new and unfamiliar system in limited time, for questionable gain as this may be the only Frostbite-related game EA release on the Switch, and even more questionable outcome in terms of performance. They also would have had to find time for their own solution to the 'playing against friends Online' issue which is at a system level on every other machines that can play FIFA 18 (and I agree is an issue where stuff like the Journey missing is background noise).
Instead the devs concentrated on prioritising the core experience in the time they had i.e. getting the actual game of football running and playing superbly well. I'll have less patience and zero interest if FIFA 19 on the Switch-should it exist-doesn't push on but for now they were right.
Re.the price. Its difficult to price any Switch game cheaper than other versions on a system with a more expensive storage medium (and allegedly, no remit to price digital products more cheaply). In the real world, it's very unlikely a company offering what is simultaneously the only football game on a system, the only handheld FIFA 18 and the only hybrid FIFA 18 is going to price it 33% lower than other versions which will sell more and had years of existing development to build on. It'd be nice if everything was cheaper but realistically it was never going to happen. Neither will DOOM, Skyrim, WWE, LA Noire, or Wolfenstein 2 be any cheaper on Switch.
@JaxonH Gaming now seems to follow a "One strike and you're out" approach. If there's bugs with a game at launch, people generally won't give it a chance even if it's fixed via a patch rather quickly.

Whilst I understand where you are coming from, I don't think that is a valid comparison for the majority of the grumbles that I have seen. As an Amstrad gamer you were not looking at the Amiga/Atari ST version of Chase H.Q. and seeing anything other than something that was closer to being arcade perfect. As a Speccy owner all I had was less colour, I was still playing the same content. And what a game it was.
Graphically yes, the Switch cannot compete but the Switch can handle what is missing. The Journey is clearly not something you bother about but for me, it was all I played in FIFA 17 and as a result, that is a huge omission. The developers, if given the time and budget which I suspect they weren't, could have reworked the cut-scenes into whatever engine they used. Sure, it might not look as pretty but we have had cut-scenes on much lesser technology in the past. The rest of The Journey is just a football match and by all accounts that works perfectly well on the Switch.
Pricing is personal thing and I happen to think all versions of FIFA 18 are over-priced. From my own point of view, I do have to take into account what is missing. The rest of the omissions don't bother me but The Journey is a big one for me.
The lack of demo on the Switch is also an interesting decision. I think EA could have done themselves a lot of good by releasing a demo and letting people see how well it plays. It wouldn't take a genius to predict the criticisms.
The Switch version of FIFA 18 had the biggest drop in the UK charts this week. It's down 10 places while the PS4 and XB1 versions remain at number 1 and 2 respectively. Overall, the game had a 69% drop-off in sales compared to last week.
@JaxonH
I don't really put any stock in AAA, non-AAA. Doesn't matter to me, and doesn't really have anything to do with game quality or how much people are going to like the game. People love Picross, man. Just like people love Stardew Valley. Both are not AAA games, but both freakin' rock.
Anyway, yea, the sales numbers are NOT going to be high for the Switch version. But as far as I know, none of us work at EA. Maybe 100,000 units for them will be considered fine - this was never going to be a million seller on Switch, and I'm sure EA's research people were pretty clear about that. But again, something like 100-200 thousand might be viewed as decent for the amount of time they put into this version.
"As an Amstrad gamer you were not looking at the Amiga/Atari ST version of Chase H.Q. and seeing anything other than something that was closer to being arcade perfect"
Well not necessarily, Shinobi had shorter levels for example. I loved Batman the Movie but it was missing elements of the Amiga game. The point is still the same though. I see it happening with Doom. People dismissing it because of how it runs and what it costs on hardware they don't have. It feels like a modern thing I don't get.
"The Journey is clearly not something you bother about but for me, it was all I played in FIFA 17 and as a result, that is a huge omission."
Which suggests you have other hardware to play it on, as I do. My bafflement with the complainers is very much aimed at those who don't have an alternative and haven't played FIFA on Switch or elsewhere.
"The developers, if given the time and budget which I suspect they weren't, could have reworked the cut-scenes into whatever engine they used."
I still think time constraints are key. As I say, I'll be much harsher if any 19 version doesn't show a substantial step forward (or not care as much if PES makes it across). But any support for the Switch, coming off the back of the Wii U, is welcome and a very good football games, to me, a real plus at this stage.
"Pricing is personal thing"
I totally agree. My own worry is if a situation arises where games have to be priced cheaply on Switch to sell, publishers will simply stop making them. But that's a different thing, value is entirely subjective.
"The rest of the omissions don't bother me but The Journey is a big one for me."
Again, that's entirely justifiable. You're quite unusual in actually having some knowledge of the game though.
"The lack of demo on the Switch is also an interesting decision. I think EA could have done themselves a lot of good by releasing a demo and letting people see how well it plays."
Totally agree. You can see how many people have bought it and been pleasantly surprised, they could have achieved that with a demo
@electrolite77
I must approve of you throwing in yet another game from Ocean Software. Good point about Batman, the old memory isn't what it was. Correct me if I am wrong though but didn't Amiga/ST games retail at a higher price point than Speccy/Amstrad games which takes us back to the subjective subject of pricing.
I think there is some common sense missing on both sides of the fence.
Some people do need to understand they do not have a PS4 in the palm of their hands. Old school gamers like we both appear to be never cared with our 'inferior' 8 bit conversions in the same way as people do now.
On the other side of the fence it would appear that EA have been a little greedy. The Switch version, no matter how competent, isn't the full fat version. It has had less of a budget but EA want to charge the same. And then not to have a demo is just madness, how much effort does that take? If they want the sales then a little effort isn't too much to expect. The Vita version wasn't a full fat version and wasn't priced equally. The Switch version might be closer than the Vita version ever was and had it included The Journey I think there would have been absolutely no room for complaint about the price. Big part missing and the same price is a hard one to accept.
You mention FIFA 19 and if that happens then I can see it being a Legacy edition. It is what happened with the Vita. Frustrating situation as EA could easily have got more sales. The price of FIFA in general is inflated due to popularity but it never used to be so why start the Switch pricing off at the same price point under the circumstances? A standard £40 price point and I reckon I would have picked it up day 1.
Pricing on the Switch is a tricky one. FIFA came out at the same time so the comparison is applicable. Skyrim and DOOM are at a disadvantage coming out long after PS4/Xbox One versions have dropped in price a lot. People will ignore the price these games were on release. I want to support 3rd party on the Switch but at some point I have to apply common sense - take LA Noire for instance, current pricing on Amazon has the Switch version at £15 more than the PS4 version. Ironically I guess that makes FIFA on the Switch seem like a good deal with its equal price point.
I disagree with some of their reviews but I'm happy to report that IGN have the balls to call out the shoddy FIFA 18 Switch port for what it is.
FIFA 18 SWITCH REVIEW A stripped-back shadow of its home console cousin.
"The Verdict
Ultimately, FIFA 18 on Switch is a story of what could have been. Watered-down game modes give the whole experience a feeling of it being a work-in-progress rather than the complete package offered in the PS4 and Xbox One version. If you only want a quick FIFA fix in single-player or local play, the Switch version delivers. But it’s such a diluted, Sunday League experience it’s impossible to recommend if you’re already playing on home consoles."
It's pretty obvious we have this situation for the most part regarding reviews:
Compares to PS4/XB1 versions -> Bad version, low score
Doesn't compare to PS4/XB1 versions -> Good version, high score
There are exceptions like Nintendo Life where Switch is compared to PS4/XB1 and the portability factor is considered more important than the missing content but that seems to be less common.
Another damning review of the Switch port. This time from WCCFTech a couple of hours ago.
"The dream of having a proper version of FIFA that you can take outside with you is finally here, except it’s essentially a port of a three-year-old game… Does that really matter? Well, it depends on how desperate you are to play FIFA on a handheld. This is by far the best version of a handheld FIFA, so if that’s all you are after then you are sorted. However, the price point (£50/$60) combined with the cut content makes this difficult to recommend to anyone with a current generation console. If you own an Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or PC, do yourself a favor and buy the real version of FIFA 18. You may not be able to take it outside but overall you are getting a much better deal for your money."
FIFA 18 Switch is fantastic. Don't care what the people with an agenda to make it look bad say. Don't care about the "popular to gang up and bash a game" culture.
The game is great. The only accusation anyone has leveled against it is "but compared to blah blah blah". That's not a sound argument. Parity is never a sound argument. People can make their own minds up which version they want. But I've noticed parity is all people talk about, because that's the only straw they can grasp.
And btw that IGN review was lol
feels too slow like last year's version
2017 FIFA review- 8.4/10 plays fantastic!
Morons... And it's not even slow. By all accounts it's faster gameplay and way quicker in the menus than other versions. Some people just have an agenda.
Which, speaking of agenda. Some people's judgement has been shown to be wildly out of touch (like when you say Switch is going to fail worse than Wii U, when anyone with half a brain could tell the opposite was going to happen- that shows a person who speaks from wishful thinking rather than proper judgement). So why anyone would care to suffer the judgement of such a person when it comes to other matters (like how good a game FIFA 18 Switch is) is beyond me. Especially when their judgement has proven to be nothing more than a personal bias to see Switch (and by extension, its games) fail, and in hopes of doing so, painting everything associated with the system in as negative a light as possible.
Hey up, the guy who doesn't have a Switch, has never played FIFA 18 on the Switch, and has never played FIFA 18 on any other system because he doesn't own them either, is in to give his informed opinions on which reviews are right or wrong.
When my 1-month-old son wakes up I'll ask him what he thinks for an equally valid opinion.
Eh, sorry but I was looking for Switch news and just so happened to post those 2 FIFA 18 Switch reviews as they were posted online today. Trying to do damage control with old reviews, alright, go on then, I know what this port is and thankfully the general public it seems do too and have voted with their wallets, by keeping it in their pocket.
Pretty good summary. The other dividing line seems to be those who've played it and those who haven't (then the attention-seeking Irish guy and his pathetic glee at a bad review of a game he hasn't played on a system he doesn't own).
I do find it amusing that in the review of a football game, it playing a really good game of football seems to be less important than a comparison to versions on other systems. I could play it on PS4 or XB1 but have gone for the Switch one, and it's really good.
