Well, if we're talking about how the general public thinks, the general public doesn't give 2 thoughts to file sizes, and that's the honest truth. The only people who care are the diehard gamers like us, collectors and what have you.
The general public just sees the game, sees it's on Switch and playable anywhere, and that's it. If/when they realize they need a micro SD, they'll go buy one just like they did for their phone. Or they'll grab a spare (I, for example, have 3 128gb cards laying around not being used, 1 200gb and 1 256gb... that's in addition to the 400gb in my main Switch, 256gb in my second Switch, and 200gb cards in each of my 2 main 3DS units, oh and 128gb in my phone)
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced

Again, I see what you're saying with tech and gaming companies, but this consumer mindset applies to everything: gaming, toys, appliances, lawn mowers - it doesn't matter. I mean, last I checked, TroyBilt isn't offering a monthly service like your Microsoft example, and consumers looking for lawn care products act just like gamers: they want insane price cuts for ephemeral reasons.
You know when games like DOOM and Skyrim should have their prices cut? When their sequels come out. Just like a car gets its price cut when its new model year comes out. Until then, DOOM 2016 and Skyrim are the most recent "models," and so asking full price at product launch is not crazy.

I hear what you say, but I still feel it's the companies fault. If a company like Walmart has the genius idea of outsourcing manufacturing of their goods to China, it's very strange when they complain about consumers wanting lower prices. Luckily with Trump in power this development might reverse. It has already started to happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RfRg9YkOhw
I feel this is way off topic, so I won't write anything more about it, but it's nice to see another Trump supporter on this forum.

I feel confident in saying this is an all time legendary sudden left-turn for a thread. (would that make it ironic?)

Like I said, I won't talk about it anymore because it would take the thread off topic.

In the long term, this and Xbox One X large file sizes will damage consumer faith in the product. If people buy an Xbox One X and is only able to fit 5-6 games on the hard drive, or if they buy a Switch and have to buy a micro SD card right away, it will make them think twice about future purchases.
What drives the whole "consumer just buying an SD card" is loss aversion. They bought a Switch and because they don't want to "lose" money on it, they buy an expensive SD card. We, as consumers, must do our part by only buying games that come in reasonable file sizes.
@Agriculture
I fully support anyone who feels the need or desire to "only buy games that come in reasonable file sizes". That's great, two thumbs up. But I myself (and I imagine most people) just don't care that much. I mean I care, but I don't care enough to actually miss out on games I want to play over something as negligible as how the content is stored on my device. You can spend your whole life as an activist and when you grow old and games are still like this you realize your passed up on some of the best games ever made... for nothing. Besides, some of the best games out there are digital only and it would be ridiculous to skip out on games that are released physically but not completely boycott digital only games.
And, it doesn't damage consumer faith because consumers 1 don't buy enough games on average for it to make a difference either way 2 understand SD cards exist for a reason and have existed for decades, and have been buying them for decades for a multitude of devices that need it, and will see it as no different than any other device they've needed to buy one for- be it their phone, camera, computer, 3DS/Vita, etc. If buying an SD card was such a big deal, they wouldn't be stocked at every Walgreens and Walmart around the country.
@UmniKnight
It is a home console. It's also a handheld, a tablet, and a portable console. They can market it as any of the above and it will be 100% true.

@electrolite77 Of course I'd want it to sell, Bethesda is doing great on the effort front, I wouldn't want that to be in vain. But the question here, is how many people are in your first 2 categories, that being portable and never played before, only owns Switch? Enough for great sales?
Who knows, I'm not convinced AAA third-party support has that much of a future on Switch. But anybody who wants such games on Switch had best hope there's enough. That's not related to just pricing though.
The cost of Nintendo marketing it home-console. It irrevocably summons the comparison with the competition, and why shouldn't it? They've officially got the same classification, regardless of "But it's hybrid! But it's more handheld!"
Whatever the marketing BS says, it's a different proposition to PS4 and XB1. Though the marketing actually describes it as a 'Home Console you can take on the go'. The first Switch trailer a year ago lasted 30 seconds before the system was undocked. It's not officially just a home Console, it's a home Console and a handheld and a hybrid. That's the whole point.
@JaxonH@electrolite77 I'll concede you that it is a hybrid, but the label it's given is how the masses will compare it with others of it's "category". If they actually labelled it a hybrid, I doubt people would've drawn comparisons as much (they always will, but less so is my guess)
"The thing is that you can never charge more than the market is willing to pay, regardless of what expenses you had making a product. I could just as well reverse what you say and conclude that it is the developers who are entitled who feel they have the right to charge 60 dollars for Doom and Skyrim."
True the market will find a level. However the publishers (not developers) are absolutely within their rights to set the price at the going rate for a AAA Switch game, given what's available for the system, the costs involved in porting the game, the precedent set by the likes of Mario Kart and the cost of the physical media. If the market decides they flop, so be it. However for example Rockstar aren't going to think "we'd best price that GTA V port at £25 to match the price on other systems" they're just going to think "no market, no chance of making money, we won't bother".
"The prices of Switch games can't be significantly higher than other plattforms, because that's not how a free market works"
The price of Switch games is going to be constantly higher than other systems because of the cartridges needed to make it the system it is.
"If a general consumer goes into a store and see Doom for 60 usd on the Switch, while it's only 15-20 usd on PS4/Xbox One, they will not think "oh, it's because it was recently ported to the Switch and the developers have to recuperate their costs".
Anyhow, in the future, hopefully the Switch will more closely follow the release dates and price drop of other plattforms. I would be okay with a little higher price on the Switch, especially for a physical release, but if I had bought Doom on Switch instead of PS4, I would have paid 6 times more for the same game (it was on sale for 10 usd on PSN)."
It would be nice if Switch dates get closer but given the difference in power levels I'm not sure how often it will happen.
As for the PS4 comparison....its interesting in terms of power. The GBA didn't get Mario World or Super Ghouls N Ghosts at the price you could get the SNES carts for in 2001. It didn't get (original) Doom at the same price you could get it on PC. Because it was offering something different and, even though they were older games, something technically impressive. 15 years later what's changed? We're getting games from the leading, most powerful home System on a portable the very next year. The portable version also functions as a home Console version. Yet consumer expectation is somehow for that to cost less.
As I said previously if you have another system that can play a game ported to Switch at higher fidelity and aren't interested in it being portable, you aren't going to buy it for the Switch no matter what. However you are absolutely entitled to make that price comparison. The other potential audiences-users without another platform to play it on or those interested in portability are not (when I bought Doom on XB1 it was cheaper on PC, but as I don't have a PC that could run it, that was irrelevant).
I hate the overuse of the word entitled on gaming forums but someone turning their nose up at Skyrim or Doom because of the price on a system they either don't have or that can't offer portability might as well be the dictionary definition. I'm not convinced AAA games have much future on Switch but if they disappear because some Switch owners make unjustifiable price comparisons that would be a shame.
I agree on the SD card non-issue. I'm yet to specifically buy one for my Switch, yet it's about to get a 128GB card handed down from my laptop, for which I just bought a 200GB one.
@electrolite77 We've never had a Switch before, so the situation is new and hard to handle what to expect of it. With DOOM and Wolfenstein now coming to the system, for example, people are using those 2 games to justify any other game coming, like Monster Hunter: World to name one.
And how do you spot whether a game is lazy on the developer end, that they skimped and could've done far more, or that the hardware was at it's limits? I'm no tech guru, I don't know when it's on the machine, or those that have developed for it, but I do want to know, when corners are cut, why that is, because it helps understand what situation we're dealing with here.
I have pre ordered Doom, How many hours game play should I expect to complete the single player mode? Time to beat .com says an average of 12 hours? Seems a bit low...
@Lethal I dont think Nintendo is saying it has to be $60 mate.
Im pretty sure they pay the license fee and production costs and dev kits, submit the game, and work out a budget based on time to port, staff required and other development cists involved, and factor that into how many units they need to sell at any given price.
Nintendo doesnt decide that.
I think Nintendo charges more and pretty much forces these developers and publishers to charge more so they can still make their profits.
