@rallydefault Mario is Odyssey definitely feels heavier than Mario in 64, but that also has to do with the fact that he covers less distance when he jumps I think.

@Bolt_Strike You haven't even played the game yet! You're missing out.

It doesn't matter whether or not I have.

Yes it does.

No, it really doesn't. You guys overrate experience. Experience is necessary for something new and never before experienced, but for something that's already been established to be bad? Not so much. If I already know that putting my hand in a blender hurts, why would putting my hand in the garbage disposal be any different? Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

I played all Donkey Kong games and Tropical Freeze is very very different to the Original trilogy. However, I remember that I had the same feelings towards the game like you when it was announced. Nevertheless, I gave it shot and after finishing the first worlds, it hit me: This is one of the best games I ever played. Give it a shot and you will be surprised.

It’s a phenomenal game. I didn’t get all the way down to the bones (or even actually finish the last world). The levels were just a tad too long for me to commit the discrete chunks of time necessary.

I did 100% Returns on Wii. TF is much better in every way.

I think I’ll pass on a double dip just now though. As much as I love it I can wait a few years until it’s a bit cheaper. If they’d included a HD non waggle version of Returns too though the would have pushed me over the edge.

As for why - Nintendo knows just how many copies Returns sold on Wii (lots and lots and lots - it was one of the most commercially successful games of its generation. Honestly I think most people are surprised when they look up the actual number). It makes sense they want that Donkey Kong name on shelves for Switch ASAP. Especially when there’s a class A* game that only a minority of Switch owners have played sitting there ready.

Just like Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart and Splatoon. If you take anything from the Mini Direct take this - Nintendo will bring all of their biggest selling franchises to Switch as soon as possible in some form. TF is evidence of this - it could have easily waited a few years, no one was demanding it now.

Their next 4 biggest franchises are NSMB, Animal Crossing, Pokémon and Smash. I think we’ll see 3 of those this year.

I am of opposite opinion of most here. I felt tropical freeze is an uninspired game. I 100+ (106 I think?) DK Wii but couldn't complete tf. And I usually at least go through a game to the end even if I seldom complete all achievements.

For me there is something off with the controls and you can't remap the buttons. You could change between 2 pre-sets and neither felt good. Who knows how it will map in single joy-con mode.

The music were jarring sometimes. It didn't help to immerse me in the game, rather the opposite. And the levels didn't have a distinct feel to them.

I think it has gotten a bit underdog shine to it because it was on the Wii U. Just like Mario sunshine before it.

I really hope so, but I'm afraid you're a bit to positive here. It'd be safe to lower your expectations a bit I expect one out of your list, maybe two. Three of four would be great.

@Chandlero Yeah, I thought it might be something like that - thanks for letting me know!

Really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts! ..sounds like it's a game that is fun from the start, gradually gets more challenging, then finishes with a final world that's pretty difficult - which seems like a nice balance to me ..and, with the addition of Funky Kong as a playable character, it seems like players will have the option to make things a bit easier for themselves if certain levels are proving to be a bit too tough to beat!

I was really excited to hear that it was coming to Switch anyway, but to hear such positive things about the co-op experience has pretty much convinced me to buy it ..should be reasonably priced if Nintendo's other WiiU ports are anything to go by, which would just make it all the more attractive! #Sold!

I'm torn on this. I vastly prefer 2D platformers on portable systems, which is why I barely played this and NSMBU but played the heck out of DKCR and NSMB2, but the idea of paying full price for something I already own on another system kills me. I've looked it up, and unlike other Wii U games, it hasn't retained its value at all, so I won't get much for selling the original.

Maybe I'll pass on this for now, and see if it ever dips in price.

@NaviAndMii ...I don't know that I'd call a port of an older game that is priced $10 higher than the last gen version was at launch "reasonably priced."

@Ralizah There is the hybrid factor though. If Switch was just a home console or just a handheld then sure it would be overpriced but you can do both.

@Ralizah I suppose! ..all I meant was that, for those of us that didn't own the WiiU, these ports represent 'AAA games without the AAA price-tag' - but, considering that they are 'pre-made' games (with a few little extras) the price could perhaps be a little bit lower

I once managed to pick up the Skyrim Remaster on PS4 - just a couple of months after it came out - for just £18 as part of their '12 Deals of Christmas' sale, which obviously felt like a much more attractive deal! ..but I don't think that the Switch 'Deluxe port' pricing is too bad considering that they're pretty much all fresh experiences (for me)

@NaviAndMii I guess it's priced lower where you live? In the United States, it's apparently being priced at $59.99, which is MSRP for all new AAA games here, and $10 higher than the $49.99 brand new Wii U games launched at.

That's less of a problem for me for a game like Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, which is incorporating a significant amount of new content that wasn't in the Wii U version.

@Grumblevolcano You can hook up any handheld to a TV, doesn't mean the games should be more expensive.

Anyway, are we sure that's not just a placeholder date? I can't see this being more expensive than €40/$40.

Octane

NaviAndMii

@Ralizah Oh right! I hadn't realised that it had been priced yet - just assumed it'd be closer to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's price than Breath of the Wild's (based on their previous pricing strategy with these 'Deluxe ports')

...but I've just had a little look around the web - it's not on the official Nintendo (UK) site yet, or on Amazon - GAME, however, have it listed for £55! (..could just be a placeholder - GAME's prices are often subject to change - but, if not, that's top AAA level pricing Ouch!)

@RunninBlue Thanks, at least some of my random thoughts are good!

I should probably write down my random ideas and actually use them for something. Or I could keep typing long paragraphs here that are usually ignored

Kimyonaakuma

@NaviAndMii That's probably a placeholder, it's probably going to be £50 like MK8D. But it's GAME so I wouldn't be suprised if they put the price up

Kimyonaakuma

NaviAndMii

@Kimyonaakuma Haha! True...their prices are often wildly inaccurate (or just plain wild!) ...I really hope it is just a placeholder price - £55 would be a bit of a turn-off!

@NaviAndMii Nothing super official, but there are placeholder prices. BTW, MK8D was $59.99 in the States as well. NoA apparently doesn't believe in pricing down last gen ports.

@Ralizah I think my memory is failing me a bit! I thought I got Zelda for £60 and Mario Kart for £40 - but MK8D is listed as being £50 on the official site (where I got it from & similar price to US) so I think I was mistaken...£50+ is AAA pricing over here - not 'reasonably priced' at all really!

@NaviAndMii Yeah they aren't always the best. I remember going to buy Fire Emblem Conquest years ago at GAME and they put the price up by £10 at the checkout, which was more than what was on the box and the website!
I know that's probably not a common thing but I was suprised at the time

I probably wouldn't buy it at £55 but even the "normal" price of £50 still seems like quite a lot...
