Bed of Chaos, done and dusted. Always such an annoying 'fight'. Thankfully I saved one of my favourites areas for afterwards; off to the Painted World!

@Spoony_Tech Great job! The Capra Demon can be quite the nuisance, especially becayse you usually encounter him early on. I've talked to people who actually gave up on Dark Souls because of him, which is always such a shame to hear. Good thing you came prepared!

@BrainOfGrimlock Wow, that's kind of daunting It's very very helpful, but also confusing to the point that I think I understand about none of it I barely have a handle on stats, and throwing all the equips in....I'm using starter gear from the Asylum still! I've found one vendor in Burg, and he seemingly sells nothing useful for me. And all of it is much too expensive. I also can't fast travel back to firelink to check it all out. Right now I'm just grinding, I used up my 30 spells just navigating from the bonfire past the bridge the fire throwers are, and the area past there....not sure how close I was or wasn't to a boss, but I had to turn around and go back since I was depleted of spells, and my little dagger and buckler aren't all that handy with the mobs there. I'm gaining decent souls in these runs but I'm not sure how much to grind before going onward, where exactly onward is, how I make it there with enough of my 30 spells remaining to do the boss since the zombies kind of deplete a lot of spells to wade through, and ultimately, if I'm anywhere close to equipped to go on.

Your list makes me think Knight may have been more understandable for a first playthrough (I have a knight character in Burg too.) At first mage seemed more comprehensible to me as an RPG player...but the equips seem...confusing...

@NEStalgia Ha, no worries - I wasn’t expecting it to all make sense straight away, i wrote it so that it will/may become useful more over time as you start to understand the game/systems more - I wasn’t 100% sure how much you know/don’t know about the all of the various systems so kind of hard to pitch it just right!

If i’ve overcomplicated/scared you from the sorcerer then I apologise - my aim is the exact opposite and to encourage you that it’s just as viable as any other build but also to forewarn that although people will tell you how easy it is, there are definitely pitfalls to be wary of. In a lot of ways you’re already reaping the benefits as you’re walking around casting, sadly it’s not the sort of game where you’ll ever be 100% caster though so you are going to have to get down and melee dirty at some points, and the blacked out spoiler parts are largely to help you with that. Don’t stress it right now, take your time to explore and learn the systems. Two things I will suggest;

1.) Firelink isn’t all that far from where you are - heading back there is good practice and leads you much closer to a merchant who specialises in magic (details in my behemoth post)
2.) Get rid of the dagger - weapons are pretty common & you’ll be better served by most of them as opposed to the dagger; you could kill the merchant you’ve already found if it’s a weapon you’re after (I always do)... It’s not massively suited to a sorcerer (fantastic dex weapon) but it’ll certainly tide you over until you can get to some other weapons/the others i suggested!

May come back to edit, but Direct time now!

@BrainOfGrimlock Killing merchants seems wrong even in this game I didn't know they drop weapons though, that's interesting.

@NEStalgia Dodging will be your friend. Stay light. Listen to the crestfallen knight at fire link. He will give hints to where a sorcery trainer is. Melee weaker enemies and save you spells for monsters that take more than a couple of hits or that are in large groups.

You will be fine. It's all just little bite sized chunks.

Just a simple longsword and shield will be fine. Equipt your catalyst in the second off hand slot and you are good to go. All you need is the stats to wield the weapon. Upgrade it at the blacksmith afterwards. You wont need to invest stats to increase you main weapons damage unless you want to lean less on sorceries.

@NEStalgia If you do need to rely on damage more, refer back to my waffle about raw weapons (there’s a reason they’re in the game after all!) their higher base damage can tide you over well until you can get something that suits an intelligence build (or you can google how to grab the drake sword) & will save you spending additional points on strength or dex to get your melee damage output up to par! For now though, just concentrate on grabbing a weapon. Any weapon. Then we can talk about upgrading it

I know what you mean about the merchants... Fwiw that’s the only one I do murdering on, basically because he has one of my favourite weapons and it’s ages until you can get it elsewhere! I can’t remember his inventory from memory but there isn’t a huge penalty for getting rid of him (there is a sin/repentance system in the game but you hardly need worry about that).

It’s up to you whether you use it or not, but this wiki page tells you all you need to know about upgrading weapons - I appreciate at the start it is as clear as mud.

NB: May be your turn to repay the favour if I pick up XC2 shortly in any case - reading some of the threads there is daunting to the point of wondering what i’ll be letting myself in for if i do get into it!

Gaping Dragon down second try. First try I only had 2 potions left. My weapon seems over powered lol.

@Spoony_Tech congrats - enjoy it (the power weapon) while it lasts though!

What is it you’re rocking btw? Drake? Or have you moved to something else? A levelled up drake should see you good till you reach (somewhere called) Anor Londo I think (based on what others have suggested previously rather than my experience)? After that you may want to start grabbing something ‘scale-y’ too, especially if you’re nearing 25-30 in strength or dex.

Good luck all - I’m off now for a bit anyway so me and my walls of text shouldn’t harass you for a while!

@BrainOfGrimlock I've read about Drake, but....where do you actually get other weapons in that area (merchant aside?) The whole weapon thing is so overwhelming (and with Diablo out tomorrow, and Civ6 and WoFF soon....I wonder if I'll be persevering in this game at the moment I'm hooked but also not sure how much time I'll pour into it with so many things arriving at once (not even including Starlink, RDR, Fallout, and my sudden desire to get into Nier...)

Haha, XC2 is daunting for all the wrong reasons. It's no Dark Souls of RPG complexity. What it does have is too many systems with convoluted applications that it ill explains. Well, ok, so does DS, but DS is still a numbers game, Diablo style, but with convoluted upgrade systems. XC2 just does weirdness with RNG and side quests you have no way of knowing you can't finish them to the last chapter.

Spoony_Tech

@BrainOfGrimlock I've actually been using a fire reinforced club. Haven't been able to level it up yet but it has 126 attack and = fire damage. Until these enemies have strength towards fire it seems to be doing the most damage even more so then the drake.

@NEStalgia That's why I was recommending a longsword. Simple. Good moveset. Just upgrade it at the blacksmith to Raw as @brainofgrimlock suggested and you can cast magic weapon on it when you get that sorcery. The rest is blowing up enemies with sorceries.

I enjoy watching this guy @nestalgia

Some swearing so NSFW

Yeah I hear you for sure! Absolutely not my place to tell you what to do/how to approach it but I think that maybe putting this (or indeed others) and focusing may help you both in terms of engagement and avoiding frustration in the long run? DS is one of those games - as you know by now - that demands your attention in order to penetrate some of more in-depth stuff. I'm almost certainly going to grab XC2 or Disgea but not until I've cleared down RDR, possibly Hollow Knight and stomped through some Diablo for similar reasons as you with this - battle systems sound complex as heck so I'll want to give them my undivided so I don't bounce off them like I know a few people have (with XC2 at least).

Some people never go into the nitty-grits & still really enjoy it, but if you scratch beneath the surface I believe the extra effort rewards you with an even bigger payoff and satisfaction. Obviously I'm as biased now as they come with this but there's not many games I've played/completed this much over the years, the prequel/sequels included!

I saw you hated Bloodborne btw? All good, to each his own; the one thing - if you can stand to bear it - that it teaches you that really translates well back to DS is it removes your dependency on the shield which is both liberating and suddenly has you looking at certain bosses back in DS in a new light!

For sure though, come back to DS when you have more time - sure there will still be plenty of people/wiki's around to help you get stuck in!

NB: If you quote someone does it notify them? I quote people a lot for context and want to know if i'm irritating them with mails/notification badges of death?

It depends on if the person has that option turned on. I do but don't mind really. If it bothered me I would just turn it off.

@BrainOfGrimlock I'm at the bottom.....well was at the bottom till the poison did me in. These ledges are giving me the creeps more then the enemies. I'm not afraid of heights but this area is making me feel uneasy lol.

@BrainOfGrimlock yeah, there's so much I want to play, I'm not sure I'll be dedicated to DS for a good long while. What surprises me is that I actually am bothered by that though

I went back to Firelink....so...where was that magic dealer again? I wend down the stairs to the left of the warrior...I didn't see downward stairs to the right (the stairs up to Burg are on the right) . I found the caged person that doesn't talk....went down further and found an elevator into nothingness....seemed a bad place to go and I feel like I'm going the wrong way?

NEStalgia

Spoony_Tech

@NEStalgia If it's the same guy I'm thinking of he's around the corner on the way to undead berg. I saw someone on the way down but really didn't have a use for him.

So I rang both bells, am I suppose to go back to the gate that opened or keep going further down? I don't want to hit another wall where I can't advance any further and have to go back anyways.
