@leoes12 Once again, is that where those ghosts are by the bridge? Head that way?

@Spoony_Tech I hear you on that! I lose souls, get really annoyed, run full tilt to get them back and do something stupid and get killed. Rinse and repeat.

@Spoony_Tech the entrance to Blighttown is right by the gaping dragon. I found it a couple of days ago but decide to explore some other areas and level up a bit first.

Want to get this but controll system with A and B backwards is putting me off

I'm still roaming around Undead Burg trying to find all the secrets. I still need to figure out how to spend my souls as a mage. I put one point in int and attunement each. I haven't bought anything at the merchant I unlocked. Not sure how much "grinding" I ought to do before moving on.

The one thing that irks me about DS on Switch is every time I turn it off I get the "connection error" followed by a return to the title screen then the slow reconnect, then back to my snapshot. I guess I can/should turn online off, but I wish it could just reconnect faster. It keeps me from picking it up for moments here and there more often, yet I hate to not get the hints.

@Spoony_Tech

Nope, the ghosts are in New Londo. Blighttown is accessed by beating the main boss in the Depths. The entrance to the Depths is below the Capra Demon.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

@Rutta honestly don't worry about the controls. I've only played Nintendo since N64 and within 15mins it's been fine. Such a great game, highly recommend it.

So glad I waited until after Blightown to hit Darkroot. Now I am hacking those trees up. Even managed to take down the Titanite Demon!

@NEStalgia I would recommend some Vitality and Stamina, maybe 20. Enough Str/Dex for which ever weapon you want and the rest in int. Attunement slots as needed. Most of the time a damage spell trumps a utility spell with magic weapon being an exception.

@Rutta It's the reverse for me now, once you get use to the controls I have a hard time going back to A select B cancel. It did take hours for me to get use to it though.

Also thanks to everybody that helped me. I still have a bit of weapon leveling I want to do before I move on though and this is the perfect place.

@NEStalgia Without trying to sound like a patronising >insert choice of naughty word<, don't be lulled into a false sense of security with how much your spells are wrecking everything you come across, especially with everyone telling you magic is easy mode! For enemies in the undead burg - with a few points in Int - it is indeed like watching Robocop take on the care bears, but you're slowly & surely heading towards things that can ruin your day if you're a caster only and don't get something pointy and stabby/bashy that can back you up sufficiently; yes your spells may wreck, but if you don't get time/chance to get them off then you're nothing more than a tasty chew toy/splatter on the edge of a demons blade!

Sure you know by now that weapons scale against your stats? Problem for you is none scale well against Intelligence without converting them to magic/enchanted type (and there's a difference between those two types), and even when converted, there are not too many that scale really well for Int anyway (luckily the few that do are pretty awesome). Now technically you can actually get a magic/enchanted weapon pretty early once you reach in Firelink, but it is more than unlikely you'll discover the smith, ember (for enchanted) and a good Int scaling weapon quickly & through organic play so you can;

1.) Look up the stuff you need/ask the fine people here for some pointers - sure they like me are happy to provide more assistance as need
2.) Find a sorcerer guide/walkthrough that will undoubtedly have it all laid out in painstaking detail
3.) Go the more 'organic' way and cover the weakness until such time you've found everything naturally and discovered it yourself

All are valid & anyone who judges can jog on in my book; I first played sorcerer at launch so I had no option but to go #3 (as the wiki's and guides just weren't available) and whilst I got some great payoff when everything started to come together, there were certainly parts where I felt like I was bashing my head against a wall and it made certain parts less than fun! I don't want to spoil everything for you but also don't want you to be put off playing a class that doesn't get anywhere near the credit it deserves so i'll throw a few spoiler marked suggestions down below that you can use/ignore at your leisure (know that like most of us you have fifty other games on the go anyway!);

Magical Weapon Smith
Obviously there are various weapon smiths across the game, each specialising in element types or higher quality. For a (dirty) sorcerer such as yourself you need Rickert & if you haven't found this guy yet you'll kick yourself when you realise where he is, not because he's easy to find, more because he's hiding right under your nose-ish - I had been playing for hours before I came across him! He will sell you sorceries (he's not the only source and won't sell you the best ones in the game - they come later from elsewhere), most importantly additional ones for early game so you're not as restricted with number of casts. He is also the man for enchanting/upgrading your weapons (even more so once you give him an ember or two!), being able to turn any normal +5 weapon into a magic type (although you'll need green titanite shards - more in a sec)

If you want to find him; there are plenty of vids on youtube, or head down the stairs at Firelink (the ones to the right of the crestfallen warrior (miserable dude sat opposite the bonfire). Take the lift down and once you exit/go down another small set of stairs, over to the right there's a dead hollow-thing hanging over the edge, walk across and you'll find another sneaky/dangerous looking set of stairs (yes you can easily fall off), walk down and there he is, sat in a cell for the rest of his days.

Weapons
I'm obviously not going to tell you what weapon to use, a lot of it comes down to personal preference - late game when you can get some of the strongest weapons (Moonlight Greatsword is one of the best Intelligence weapons but is far off for you just yet) you'll have a far better understanding of what works/doesn't work for you and you can do a bit of trial and error, early game though is a bit more tricky as nothing scales well as mentioned above.

Now you can either start straight away going about getting stuff for a solid magic/enchanted weapon but conversely you can also look at using either the drake sword or converting another weapon you like into the Raw type - both the drake and Raw weapons have (much) higher base damage, the trade off being that they don't scale against any stats so their effectiveness drops off as you get further into the game. This saves you having to spend too many points on str/dex (you'll need to spend a few to be able to wield whatever weapon you eventually decide on) to cover off the damage deficit from poor Int scaling against 'normal' weapons & essentially buys you time until you can more easily get to the locations/find the items you need to construct a potent magic-basher.

If you want to go straight for a magic/enchanted weapon then you might want to do your google homework as to exactly what weapons to look out for (and ultimately whether they'll work better as magic or enchanted overall - weirdly enchanted often seems to be superior). Two early game suggestions you could look at (and this is by no means an exhaustive list) are;

Claymore - This is one of my favourite weapons in the game mainly from my first playthrough (the RT/Zr attack is epic!). It's versatile as all heck and once enchanted scales against Intelligence wonderfully. You'll almost certainly have to spend some points in Str/Dex to be able to wield it but very worth it. It's found on the other side of the bridge guarded by a certain fire breather (don't believe you're here yet based on what you've said but it's not too far away.

Baldur Side Sword - Dropped by the annoyingly quick knights in the undead parish, this sword has a lot of fans. I like how fast it is but can't get on with the moveset. It also scales well (I believe). Also available not far from where you are.

Embers & upgrading
Obviously loads of sites out there will tell you the full schtick about this, but in basic terms, whether you're going for a Raw, Magic or Enchanted weapon you'll want to start by upgrading the weapon of your choice to 'normal +5' using titanite shards (these are pretty regular drops from the aforementioned Baldur knights in undead parish). From there either Andre (smith near undead parish) can 'modify' your weapon down the Raw path, or Rickert can move you onto the magic path (note it's a different option in the smith menu to change types/upgrade past 5). As you upgrade past +5 note that the titanite requirements become higher (in terms of amounts and the type) and more importantly you'll need coloured titanite for magic/enchanted - both can be farmed quite early too but again, it's more work but that trade-off is up to you.

Wow, is all this really necessary...? Is it really that hard...?
Not as such no, for a large part you'll be able to bash through without too much of a hitch but you are going to come up against some stuff that if you're not prepared will seriously test you. Most people who know you're new to the game will warn you about the Gargoyles, but as a caster should actually destroy them, it's more the Capra demon a little bit afterwards that will ruin your fun - he fights in a room the size of a wardrobe and has two little dogs with him that prevent you getting anything even remotely spell based off and you have to get them down as quickly as possible to stand a chance. I only focused on Intelligence and Attunement first time out but hit a brick wall with this boss as it took me 5-6 hits per dog to kill them which meant the big angry dude with 'compensating for something' swords was free to slice and dice me ad nauseum. There aren't too many other huge hurdles like that, but it's important to note that there are a few magic resistant enemies in the game later so having something like an upgraded raw (or divine for another area) is a great plan B and ensures you're covered against pretty much most types of enemy.

As for stat upgrades, I'm a bit abnormal with them and avoid Vitality/Endurance upgrades until i've maxmised my damage output as much as I can (I do tend to throw a point or two at endurance as needed), subscribing very much to the 'don't get hit/glass cannon' approach. Certainly upgrading either stat won't hurt, farm from it, and as @zionich and I suggested above throwing some points into strength/dex that suit the weapon(s) you want to rock is also a necessary evil!

Sorry for the long read, hope it helps - feel free to tell me to shush if not!

@Spoony_Tech Don't worry about going the 'wrong' way - there is no wrong way, just somewhat 'less optimal' routes, but that's half the fun anyway right? General rule of thumb is that if you're getting stuck like that (can't see etc) then there's generally something you've missed or the game is (very) subtly suggesting you come back later. Admittedly as a lot of the game first time out is tough it can feel like the game is saying 'just sit forever by the bonfire' but rest assured - as you've seen for yourself and as others have suggested - there are certain paths that become easier as you progress through, and just think - 1-2 shotting those wheeled skeletons (who are admittedly incredibly annoying) later will be oh so sweet!

With regard the ghosts, don't sweat it too much, you can buy more of the 'item' from a vendor in the burg, and you can even farm said item from the very ghosts it helps you kill (although naturally you need some before you can farm them). There's also a weapon you can get that helps make short work of them too! When I first played through the game, there was a group of us on a thread not dissimilar to this helping each other work stuff out as the wikis weren't up yet etc. those haunted ruins were the short straw I picked as we all headed off in different directions to scope the game out/gather info so I have a particular love/hate relationship with them. As you get to know your way around you'll find you can actually run through most of that area - with a few short jumps or deliberate falls you can shortcut most of it out completely, but I wouldn't advise that for you just yet, better to either head back to darkroot or get down to the depths/blighttown!

So I found where I need to go and finally fought the Capra Demon. I'm definitely a bit leveled as I killed it first try. Will do some more exploring tomorrow as its time for bed!

@leoes12 they are pretty beasty, but a necessary evil in Oolacile given everything there shrugs your magic off a little!

I can definitely see why people get irritated by them in PvP, but I’d not expect most new players to find the dark stuff until late on in a first playthrough (unless they’re masochistic/using a guide) so they should never really be that OP, and it’s all pretty relative anyway when you think about what havoc an upgraded drake sword can create early game?

BrainOfGrimlock

BrainOfGrimlock

@Spoony_Tech awesome, well done!

That’s what I mean by no wrong way; you were heading to a dead end in the tomb but 1.) now you know what it’s all about & will be better prepared on your return and 2.) the experience gained stopped you (potentially) bashing your head against a capra demon fragranced wall!

@BrainOfGrimlock true but I just helped a sl10 get dark bead. And he has been invading all afternoon

leoes12

BrainOfGrimlock

@leoes12 Ha! Well I'm sure you're both super popular right now with the people new to the game; poor folk stumbling around the 'burg or the depths and suddenly they get a dark bead to the face? Not exactly the kind of warm welcome I'm sure they'll appreciate but if they were expecting a cuddle I guess they're playing the wrong game?

BrainOfGrimlock

BrainOfGrimlock

@leoes12 Yeah yeah, tell it to the judge... you did just admit to helping the accused obtain the murder magic, no?

Tbh, if it's anything like when I played the remastered version earlier this year there's plenty of old hands playing anyway so even with Dark Bead he may not have it all his own way! Learned that lesson a long time ago, there's (nearly) always someone better than you not far away! For some reason at low levels though I always got the guy invading who wasn't sure which end of the sword to hold which kinda makes me feel mean...?

Far more into helping with bosses than invading nowadays too, internet in Australia ensures anything PvP is probably not the best idea!!

NB: Spent far too much time on here today so good luck all - going to do some stuff in that real world I've heard about!
