@zionich@Quarth yeah it’s a fine line between helping & spoiling, especially when there are quite a few people reading the thread who are playing for the very first time!
Half the fun of the game is discovering/overcoming stuff for yourself, but admittedly some things are just so obtuse/random you’d likely never figure it out without a few pointers (such as finding your way back to the asylum - kudos to whoever figured that out first!) - it’s why I’m purposefully trying to be ‘helpful but vague’ (ha - let’s just hope it doesn’t just come off as annoying!).
If people need more help then there seems to be plenty around who can go into the specifics, or naturally the wiki’s are rock solid now the game’s been out so long
Hello all. So I was fighting the Gargoyles late at night and got completely destroyed. I tried killing them about 7 or 8 times before I gave up and went to sleep. The next morning I reluctantly fired up the game expecting the same result. To my surprise I killed them on the first try. That night the Capra demon was killing me left and right. The next morning I conquered him the first try. Last night the Stray Demon was the same story. This morning I killed him first try. So the moral to my story is If the going gets tough....go to sleep.

@NESlover85 I feel your pain! Been having a similar story with Hollow Knight; main time I play my Switch is just before sleep when naturally pretty tired - I get frustrated with myself because I make stupid mistakes and just generally play much worse than I know I can! Maybe certain games should have a ‘daylight play only’ feature to save a few controllers!
Anyone else's heart start pounding like crazy during boss fights? @BrainOfGrimlock Daylight play only lol. They should implement that feature. Or Nerf should start making controllers again! @zionich Thank you!

I am using a +7 Longsword, +5 Knights Shield, and still using the starting warrior armor unupgraded. I have obtained a certain ring that should help with blight town. Is this a good set up? Anything else I need for preparation?

@zionich No worries about spoilers for me at least. But I can try and figure out the usage of the shield myself. If I don’t, then I’ll come back to you! Thanks anyway!
@BrainOfGrimlock Yeah, some stuff I have found out myself, but I’ve also used the excellent Dark Souls Wiki guide sometimes. In this game, it can be helpful with some tips.
@NESlover85 Yeah, I thought I was going to have a heart attack during the fight against the Capra Demon!
@NESlover85 ask ten people about your armour in this and you’ll likely get ten different answers!
As you may have read in one of my previous ‘unnecessarily long’ posts I’m a big advocate of dodging >>> blocking so I very often only wear robes due to higher resistances and - more importantly - lower weight. Your equip load determines your agility in terms of jump distance and dodge-roll ability/invincibility frames so (apologies if you know this already) I like to keep my char as light as possible (<25% total load - gives the biggest bonus to roll). If you didn’t know this, take various pieces off near a bonfire to see the difference the weight has on your roll; no-one likes a fat roller!
If you wanna stick with armour then you might want to keep an eye out for a ‘dude’ named Havel, he has something that will help, otherwise I think there are definitely better armour sets in the game, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it just yet.
@BrainOfGrimlock I followed a guide to kill the Stray Demon and they suggested doing it naked except for weapon. I tried it and I was surprised how fast I could move and roll! With my armor on I barely dodge and rely heavily on my shield. I really like this game and want to run a second character (people say pyromancer is fun). I am too much of a scardey cat to not use my shield but I am going to try a character that relies on speed more than armor(Not looking forward to facing Capra again!).

@Quarth Good to know I'm not the only one! My heart was pounding so heavy and my arms started shaking after I finally beat him! I never thought a game could give me this much of an adrenaline rush!
@Dezzy Is the valley of the Drakes near the depths?
It was a boss fight vid I watched a while back that converted me. I was always wary of weight etc, but he absolutely destroyed one of the supposed hardest bosses without taking a hit whilst 2-handing his weapon. Advantage of 2-handing is that you still get any bonuses from the equipped shield (like the amazing grass-cress which you may/may not find at some point) and your damage output is substantially increased per swing.
Since then, playing Bloodborne has also helped enormously as you don’t have a shield by default (and if you get one they’re a bit cack) and strongly encourages you to keep moving.
You’ll be amazed on later playthroughs how easy you find it - I said a few pages back how the Capra Demon nearly broke me on my first playthrough; my playthrough on remastered this year saw him go down in 1 combo/3 hits after 1 shotting his pet KDNJDOAJNDKDNs - it was supremely satisfying & you’ll all be doing crazy stuff like that soon enough!
Just to add; there’s a spider shield in the depths too to save you backtracking all the way to the VotD if you didn’t pick it up.
Nope. Valley of Drakes is accessed either from New Londo ruins if you have the Master Key. Or from the Darkroot Basin if you don't (it's through a cave in the wall near where you fight a black knight)
@BrainOfGrimlock 3 hit combo and he was down!!! That's awesome! Was that with the grass Crest shield? Glad to hear there is a spider shield in the depths. @Dezzy I dont even know where the Darkroot Basin is either.

@NESlover85 Yeah, I’m beginning to feel a bit nervous, but at the same time excited, because now I’m on to face the Depth’s big boss dragon before entering Blighttown. Wish me good luck!
By the way, what’s the deal with the red glowing knight in the sewers?
From Andre the blacksmith you go out down the stairs where the massive Titanite Demon is. That takes you to Blackroot Garden. Blackroot Basin is the first right after that.
That's a scripted invasion. It's like the invasions you can get if you're online but it's a scripted single-player one instead. There are like 5 or 6 of them in the offline game.
