@EvilLucario Well that's good to know at least. Can't see myself playing new game plus at all.

@EvilLucario Great, there's weapons you only get a chance on?? I hate those types of things in games. Really makes me feel like I'm losing out on the best weapons and items a game has to offer. I don't often play through a game a second time as I have too many other games on my plate and not enough time in the day. This game seems like it warrants multiple play throughs.

You can get pretty much every weapon you see in the game. The one he was talking about is a chance drop of a really good early weapon but you can find a respawnable enemy that drops the same weapon just much farther into the game

So guys it is all on the trial and error way to play the game? I beat the first boss and then a giant crow hauled my ass to some nice green ruins. Then some people were grumpy at the ruins. Went to a graveyard and some skeletons chased me like mad because I killed 3-4 of their comrades. I decided to run like hell and went to a cave where some ghost women looked at me funny and I died.

Is this consistent through the game? If so I have to put so much effort in reading guides than dying without a purpose.

BUT still the sense of adventure is amazing!

@Zuljaras you just went to the 2 out of 3 beginning areas you should not have to go in the beginning

@Zuljaras The fact that you're going the hard way doesn't help lol. I went through the cemetary and way down where the ghosts were a number of times before I told myself I must need to level up. About another 2 to 4 hours later while getting a bit easier still wasn't happening and I was getting frustrated. Then I was told there's amother way easier, I missed this way at least 3 to 4 times before I finally found it. In finding that I really need to pay more attention to my surroundings better as I've missed a few paths already.

I'm usually pretty good at fully exploring in games but for some reason this game is killing me in that department. It's extremely easy to miss a door or totally forget to go back and check other areas. Being dark doesn't help but I like to stay at the recommended brightness for the game.

@Zuljaras Talk to NPCs multiple times to exhaust dialogue as well. They give hints. Item descriptions give hints and lore. Alot of it is just exploring and learning as well.

EDIT: Most importantly, killing NPCs is permanent!

@zionich That is the only reason I'm glad that attacking isn't mapped to the a or b buttons lol.

Belltower Gargoyles are down. Went pretty well. Hurt one of them with my pyromancy and the other I slowly killed off with controlled attacks. Pretty cool. Time to face the music in lower Undead Burg.

Eeeew rotting pooches.

Bell Gargoyles have what's probably the only good piece of music in Dark Souls 1 tbh. OnS is the next best thing and it's alright, but everything else just blends in with each other.

There's music? I guess I hadn't noticed lol. Definitely not rememberable or even noticeable really.

Wow, this thread has moved on a bit!

@NEStalgia The shortcuts and overall layout of the the world/how it's pieced together are my absolute favourite part of DS1 and it's why the game is overall my favourite out of the entire series. Saying that though, reading your comments about bonfires I completely understand where you're coming from, I found I was just banging my head against the wall for the first 10-15 hours I played but after that, when I discovered some of the shortcuts and saw it all coming together (and I stopped dying quite so often) I really started to get into it. I usually hate/haven't got time for games that "get good after 15 hours" as why in the heck should I have a miserable time for 15 hours to enjoy a few later? All I'll say with hindsight is some of those first 15 were actually really important and taught me a lot that I didn't realise at the time - obviously having played #3 you've learnt some of these already - but yeah, there were times when I was daydreaming about playing something else/getting ready to frisbee the disc. Luckily I stuck with it and it's easily one of the best experiences I've had games-wise. I played as a sorcerer first time through, don't let people put you off by telling you it's boring etc, it's just a different experience - there are a few bosses further into the game that resist magic which will make for a much different experience to other players who will (and do) literally steamroll other bosses. At the same time you can trivialise bosses that 'Mr Sword & Shield' will have a much tougher time against. I've done numerous builds now and I find they're all fun to play as and perfectly viable, the difficulty will just spike differently in different areas and you'll potentially want a 'plan B' in your weapon bag. Spell use can be a pain early doors, but if you raise attunement alongside Intelligence you can equip multiple spells later on that’ll mean it’s far from a concern. The biggest issue for sorcerers is the lack of weapons that scale well with magic and that early doors you won’t be able to scale against intelligence - add in the confusing fact that there are both magic AND enchanted weapons too and it can become something of a head-scratcher. It is still perfectly viable however and as suggested by @EvilLucario the claymore is a great choice - although I’m pretty sure it’s on the other side of ‘dragon-bridge’ (don’t think you've got there yet, despite seeing his royal-fat-redness swoop across your screen earlier) rather than a boss drop? Either way I like the moveset and the thrust move is incredible (until you judge the distance wrong and stand there vulnerable for what feels like 20 minutes)!

@Sadist sounds like you’re going along really well, I think around the Gargoyles is when a lot of people tend to give up? Weirdly first playthrough I found getting to the gargoyles harder than actually fighting them! Be interesting to see how you get on against the next boss!

@Spoony_Tech I didn’t ever use the drake sword, some people swear by it & others swear at people who use it; regardless of what others think if it’s working for you, take every advantage you can get and don’t give a flying monkey about what they say or if they tell you how to play, it’s your own journey! As I mentioned in an earlier post, by stubbornly insisting on being a magic user that wouldn’t touch the drake sword or read any hints online for my first playthrough I made it significantly harder on myself to the point frustration (or more appropriately the Capra Demon) almost caused me to quit. If I’d used the drake and thrown a few more points in strength/dex earlier I probably wouldn’t have had anywhere near as much of a problem and enjoyed a better experience so it’s a balancing act? What I will suggest is having a Plan B because whilst the drake kicks ass early doors damage wise it doesn’t scale to a stat so is outclassed by the mid-point.

Some other good points/hints suggested by the other guys, I’m trying to keep hints/suggestions as light as possible - it’s easy for us to come in here and tell you how to do stuff easily but learning is half the fun; I managed to take out the Gargoyles in 4 hits (2 each - the first was dead before the second arrived!) when I played the remaster earlier this year which felt incredible considering the reputation & beatdown they’ve given to so many players over the years, but it felt ‘earned’ from all the hours of dying/learning that had gone before - hopefully you guys feel this in the not-too-distant.

One of the best things about DS is ask ten people ‘what is the best weapon’ and you’re likely to get 8-10 different answers so remember there is often no ‘right way’ to do things (although there are lots of wrong ones for sure!). Fwiw; a dex build with the uchigatana is my standout favourite build now for DS1 - all of you have knowingly/unknowingly gone past your first opportunity for picking an Uchi up. It’s not in the same league as the drake at this point but it’s a very viable weapon for the whole game - if you’re willing to pay the ‘sacrificial price’ to get it

Good luck!

@BrainOfGrimlock Oh, I'm at the Catacombs in my current playthrough (playing on PC) so I forgot the exact location of the Claymore. Just beat the Bed of Bull**** so I'm going to go after Gravelord Nito, then the Four Kings, then end with Seath and Artorias of the Abyss until this run is done.

Speaking of the katana though, that's what I'm currently rocking as my build in my current playthrough, along with a Bandit's Knife (upgraded to a Lightning Knife). I've been running around as a parrying maniac and it's been so fun lol.

It's weird with the Claymore, only reason I remember is because I went hunting for it not so long ago, but I don't remember it being there in base game but can find no mention of it having moved? I scoured every single inch of undead burg when I started the remaster earlier this year as I'm sure that's where it used to be - had to wiki in the end as I thought I was going mad.

Goddam Seath... When you were all talking about cutting the boss' tails off a few pages back I had nightmare flashbacks about trying to cut Seath's off - anyone play on 360 at launch? His tail used to clip through the scenery which made the hitbox almost impossible and an abject lesson in misery and futility. He's also one of the magic-resistant bosses I allude to in my post above that made my life quite difficult being a 'dirty-magic-tosser'. But tail issues aside he was nothing compared to the other ajgjfjdkskhfjs you'll be fighting shortly...

Four Kings first time was - and still is - for me, the hardest boss fight I've had in the whole souls series, again because of magic resistance and my inability to beat it's stupid, stupid, stupid face in before his friends came along to play keepy-ups with my ragdoll-ing carcass. Must have died close to 20 times trying to beat these bunch of chair-sniffers and there was a rightly audible cheer when they finally went down!

Good luck with the rest of your playthrough, hope Artorias isn't too much of a kndkddjbsbf...!

@BrainOfGrimlock I actually beat the Four Kings on my first try (though I had 20 Estus since I think it was the second to last Lord Soul I went for). I didn't find him too bad and I let like three kings spawn by the end.

Artorias I got hit a lot, but I think I might have just brute-forced him with the 20 Estus. Same deal for Manus and Kalameet, where those guys weren't so bad.

Actually, the boss that gave me the most trouble was the Bell Gargoyles. But that's because I haven't upgraded my weapon at all nor used any Gold Pine Resins, so I was unintentionally handicapping myself. Outside of the Bell Gargoyles, I wasn't really stuck with any boss since a huge majority of DS1 bosses are really easy or simplistic or punishable.

@EvilLucario it was just the damage output/magic resistance with the kings again, same as had been the case with the Capra Demon. In terms of the boss itself I'd say it's probably one of the easier ones if your damage is on par... as his defense stripped half of mine away, mine sadly wasn't which made for a miserable time. Always found the summon for him weird too given he's sorcery resistant too? I got through it in the end anyway, just had to change my weapon up and adapt, it's just a shame that it's only really the sorcerer class that gets walled to a certain extent? Most of the dlc boss' are magic resistant too annoyingly, luckily they weren't stab proof though.

It is a shame how 'easy' most of the bosses are now with sufficient hindsight/lessons learned/practice, but then I guess it's testament to how good the game is that I get (almost) as much joy from helping others through them (whether discussing or through co-op) as I did playing it myself.

Absolutely love the poo out of it still - as i do all of them - and still my favourite of the bunch.

NB: I should probably stop talking about it I reckon before I've bought it (again) and am playing it (again) - got a shiny horse simulator downloaded and waiting for me yet here I am still talking about a game I've finished so many times!

The lack of bonfires does have its benefits too. You'll realise later on how it adds to the game mechanics.

@BrainOfGrimlock Fair enough. I barely play with magic since I've said before that I find it boring, but indeed there are different checks and balances for stuff. I remember the Iron Golem taking quite a bit of time with my katana, with me barely doing much damage.

@leoes12 I have sort of warmed up to Artorias's theme, but I'm sorry, I don't really like Sif's theme at all. Granted it's supposed to make you feel sad for killing him, and if you took the time to do the DLC and read the item descriptions you can feel something. Not me on my first playthrough though, and I just don't like the composition of the song, and that goes with like 90% of the music in DS1 imo.

That said when you're actually fighting bosses, they fit in well, but otherwise I can't just go on YouTube and get hyped from listening to the soundtrack as I feel like they all blend in together.
