@Casco I think that’s a fair comment. Been looking at doing just that myself.

@Nin89 Unless you're willing to wait for a possible, but not likely release of a more powerful Switch console this Christmas, I would not hesitate if you're truly interested in the Switch.

One thing, though: if you're going to use it in both handheld and TV mode, or more in handheld mode, then waiting for the currently revealed OLED version might be a more sensible option, but other than that, there's no real reason to wait if you want to go for the Switch.

Its always hard recommending a console to somebody, even more so when it comes to the switch which I have a definite love/hate relationship with.

Switch pros:
Its a portable console that can also link up to the TV.
Nintendo exclusive games

Switch Cons:
Everything runs worse on Switch than other consoles
Prepare to pay significantly more for all software (Doom 2016 is £5 on PS4 and £40 on switch for example)
Game selection is limited and a lot of the bigger releases either miss switch or come to the system so late Its pointless.

If you are looking at playing predominantly hooked up to a TV, I would suggest looking into the Xbox Series S.
It's a cheaper console than the switch and can play the newer releases with limited downgrades (it's usually 1440 rather than 4k). A negative of that console is that it is digital only, but in fairness with GamePass you will have access to more games than you can reasonably expect to finish.

@Casco Fair enough comment, but the OP clearly stated also being interested in Nintendo games, and even though I myself also own multiple Xbox console next to my Nintendo consoles, I still see plenty of merits in both platforms and would not necessarily choose one over the other, unless we go into specifics.

Casco

@ThanosReXXX true. Like I said I own the 3 consoles and each had its place and use for me. But if you want adult games and not sure which ones you’ll like, Xbox + Gamepass absolutely seems the way to go for me. I think OP needs to think what’s more important for him, the Nintendo exclusives (very strong pro in its own) vs having the largest and best performing library of “adult games” paying less.

I get it, Switch also has adult games. But library is not even comparable and neither is performance. DOOM Eternal for example, it’s heavily degraded. Playable, for sure, but nowhere near the PS5 or Xbox Series versions. And you can’t find on the Switch games like Red dead redemption 2, racing games like Forza Horizon 4 & 5, Call of Duty, etc.

Casco

ThanosReXXX

@Casco No, the library certainly isn't comparable, no debate there, which is basically also exactly why I don't limit myself to one single platform, and you're also right about the OP having to consider what's more important for him.

As for the Switch not having certain games, well. There's plenty of Call of Duty clones, even though these can also be found on the other consoles, and the Switch has also got Gear Club for sim racing. Not nearly as advanced as Forza, but still: it's not like there's no sim at all on there, and of course, there's also GRID and other multi-platform sim racers. And it has plenty of arcade racers too, although most are not open world, obviously.

Either way, perhaps stating the obvious, we were just sharing options with the OP, ultimately it's up to them what they want. The most important sentence I hooked onto with my own comment was:

"I also like Mario, Zelda, etc. I am into shooting games. It’s just that I’d like to find the right games I’m interested in."

That almost made me say: well, if you have the cash to spend, get both a Switch AND an Xbox of your choice...

Casco

@ThanosReXXX fully agree man. Get both of you are willing to spend that much, otherwise he’ll have to decide what’s more important to him.

About Call of Duty clones, my understanding is that they’re not even comparable (not a fan of Call of Duty myself). But I think the experience for “adult games” is indeed more comparable. By the way I’ve been an adult for a few decades now, and I really enjoy Mario games more than most others, so there’s also that 😀

Casco

ThanosReXXX

@Casco Well, there's some free 2 play ones, which are also on the other consoles, some similar to COD, some more futuristic, like Warframe. I have that installed both on my Xbox One S and on my Switch, and it looks and plays remarkably similar, save for a few minor downgrades, but other than that, it's pretty good on both consoles.

As for the more COD-like, there's Modern Combat - Blackout, which is basically a COD-light:

A lot of those similar type games, regardless of genre, are all more or less lighter versions of these types of games found on the other consoles, but at least they're there, and depending on how bad you want a certain type of game, or specific title, you may find that not everyone is willing to buy a console solely for just that one game, so I'm leaning more towards choosing the platform that has the most titles that someone wants.

@Casco P.S.
Forgot all about Warface:

@Nin89 You might just want to give the above two videos a look...
And there's another noteworthy title in the first of the two comments above as well.

"Game selection is limited and a lot of the bigger releases either miss switch or come to the system so late Its pointless."

I disagree.
On my purchase list, I have written 100+ Switch games to buy with 45 Switch games have been purchased.
Meanwhile for PS4, I have written until 50+ PS4 games (with some of them are double dip games from Switch version).
So clearly I have more selection games on Switch than PS4.
I don't even care with bigger release since bigger releases are mostly for adult gamers and I hate games like that.

Casco

@Anti-Matter for AAA games, there’s no way the Switch matches the other 2. The Switch appeal are Nintendo exclusive and indie, but if you think AAA third party releases are anywhere close to the other two consoles, you’re just delusional.

Casco

Mr-Fuggles777

@Anti-Matter your gaming criteria limits a significant amount of games available on both Xbox and PlayStation so you can't use that as a metric.

I have over 100 switch games in my library and over 300 Xbox games in my library (not including the ones available to me via gamepass). My PlayStation library likely sits around the 1-200 mark but I've stopped playing it so haven't bought anything for a while.

@Casco I wouldn't bother, because it's basically like carrying water to the sea. I suppose you don't know him well enough yet, but he only plays kid-friendly games, so 99 percent of both Xbox and PlayStation's library doesn't interest him.

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

ThanosReXXX

@Anti-Matter Dear Anti, we are talking about FACTUAL console library sizes, NOT game libraries limited by a rather a-typical and VERY limiting taste. It doesn't matter what your opinion is, we are talking facts here. Pound for pound, there's WAY more titles available on the other platforms, that cater to a wider audience.

And seeing as that is a fact, you CANNOT disagree. You can only disagree with an opinion, not with something that is simply true.

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

Casco

@ThanosReXXX Appreciate the heads-up. Yeah saying tjwt the Switch’s Third party library is the broadest and more compelling it’s like saying the Xbox one had the strongest First party exclusives last gen. No matter how you put it, neither of those statements are anywhere remotely close to be true.

Casco

Anti-Matter

@Casco
I don't play AAA games, don't even like them nor thinking about them.
I only play obscure games, lower than AAA, casual games, games for kids.

No good deed

AGAIN...!!!

ThanosReXXX

@Anti-Matter Well, then perhaps you should have thought twice before commenting, because by now, you should know what kind of reactions you will get, and saying the Switch has more games is simply not true. We were not looking at it from a personal view or taste, but simply from actual amount of titles per system.

@Casco You're welcome, and very true.

@ThanosReXXX Eh, Anti’s response at this point would be t- oh wait he’s already done it.

I’d say that while PlayStation has more AAA games that interest me, Nintendo’s first party games are just that good that they hold up in strength, not in number.
