@dionysos283 from a control perspective they are all good and build on each other but I would say at the very least start with 2 as it really hits its stride gameplay wise. But 1 is still very worth playing. So I would still say just play the series through.

As much as I really want to recommend 3 just because it's the best, I have to agree starting with 2 is the right choice.

The first game was kind of rough around the edges inasmuch that it had difficulty spikes with QTE events leading to insta death (not the end of the world, you just try again, but it was aggravating at times), and the combat hadn't yet been fully refined. It also has a brownish look to it, while 2 and 3 are much more colorful. It's definitely worth playing once you're into the series, but I think 2 is the perfect launchpad.

You won't really appreciate the gameplay improvements and changes of 3 without a frame of reference for comparison. If you play 2 first, you'll come to appreciate 3 on a whole new level when you get to it.

And make no mistake. Bayonetta 2 was, up until 2 days ago, the best action game I've ever played, bar none. Even assuming 3 is a bit better, it isn't by that much, and I still strongly regard Bayonetta 2 as one of the best video games ever made.

Whoever is responsible for the parry timing on Viola can rot in hell for all I care. Sucks the fun out of the game right at the very bloody end. Honestly starting to hate playing as her, as much as I like Viola as a character in B3..

Haven't played yet, but I heard it takes some time getting used to. You have to block at the right time, correct?

NintendoByNature

Dom_31

@NintendoByNature yeah, on paper it's super straightforward but the actual window for it is absolutely ridiculous and you basically need to learn the timing for every attack on an enemy because the flash before attacks doesn't actually help you with blocking at the right time/witch time.

I'm sure I'll manage to get used to it but it's gonna take ages because you play so little as Viola and Bayonetta's witch time trigger works just differently enough to throw me off. Dodging to trigger witch time also isn't anywhere near as unforgiving, or maybe I'm just a hell of a lot more used to Bayo's timing having played the other games a lot.

@Dom_31 that makes sense. I'll be firing i5 up hopefully be weeks end, and I'll see how it works out.

I love the stealth sections. I didn't do too good as I was learning how things work but they're super fun once you get the hang of it.

Really liking those sections myself. At first I thought it was going to annoy the heck out of me but they're actually very fun and a nice way to break up all the hack 'n slash action.

Thanks for your advice!
I guess I'll buy the Bayo 1&2 collection and try out the first game first. If it doesn't click with me, I'll try Bayo 2. These games look so cool, I really want to give them a try!

Yeah, the side missions are great. First go around I tried actually fighting the enemies normally because I'm a stubborn a****** but once you adjust to what they actually expect from you they're stupid fun. Pretty sure I pure platinum'ed all four by now (might be a normal platinum among them) even tho I still don't know where that secret water way or the angel are in the first Mission... And any other ones. Apparently there's one friend from Paradiso in each one.

@Gamer83
I'm so addicted to exploring every nook and cranny, finding secrets, solving time puzzles, etc. I spent 1.75 hrs on Chapter 4. I've consistently ranked dead last for clear times on the leaderboards lol.

Speaking of which, was just in feudal japan and couldn't figure out the time puzzle. This wall was broken out in the present, and rewinding time sealed it up? You could enter regardless, and there was a 2nd entrance to it anyways. Missed 2 verses in that chapter despite searching everywhere. There's some seriously well hidden stuff in this game. I love it when you search like crazy but still can't find everything.

This one's gonna require a 2nd playthrough. The flow is so much better than Bayo2 though. The exploration is better, combat is waaaay deeper with more diverse weapons, the chapters bounce around with 3 main gameplay types. And it all just comes together perfectly.

I wasn't sure they'd be able to top Bayo2 by much (I figured it would be at least as good, maybe a bit better). But this game is just miles beyond Bayo2. I can't get enough.

I'm at Chapter 8 or 9, and at this point, if everything holds up, this will surpass Bayonetta 2 as my favorite action game ever. I also love exploring every level, I do that in each game I play, this is no different, like trying to find the hidden secrets. Obvious though, it's all about the gameplay, I appreciate how all 3 protagonists have a unique playstyle, Cereza is my favorite, she's just got a more fluid style, but Viola is also pretty fun once I got used to the slight differences playing as her. Overall, I get a DMC 5 vibe (which is a good thing, love that game too) just with female leads who happen to be a little more enjoyable personality wise, imo.

ShonenSamurai

Guys and gals, I need help here, I am already at chapter 10 and have about 80000 orbs, but the moves on the tree list still show with a lock. The only ability I could unlock is Dodge Offset. Am I glitched out of the moves or maybe there is something I am not doing. Please help.

I just played the Prologue of the first Bayonetta and omg is this game freakin' awesome!
But since I normally don't play these kind of games, I naturally fell into button mashing, instead of deliberately doing combos. Is there any tips you guys can give me to get better at the combat? Thanks!

There it is ppl!

Only an extra $30 for that gorgeous embossed collector edition with massive art book and sealed collector cases with Bayo1 and Bayo2 cover art.

@ShonenSamurai you can move to different tabs on the skill tree screen, mate. Reading what's on the UI usually helps with those kinds of problems.

@ all

What's your playstyle in Bayonetta. Which combos do you use most often? What moves or weapons can you recommend to buy? Thanks!

dionysos283

JaxonH

What playstyle?
Spider weapon all the way, with the Spider summon attached. I also play with the guns from Bayo2 with Gamorrah as summons. Still unlocking new stuff though, so this could change.

Which moves?
Yes

Which combos?
Also yes. Though I have a particular affinity for XXXAAA+ZL

Right now I'm all about Cassiopeia and Simoon, occasionally switching out one or the other for Abracadabra.
As for combos, uh...maybe I'll share some clips if anyone wants to see some quick PP verses.

Also, I found Madama Butterfly to honestly be the best demon slave to use just because it's the easiest to keep track of what move she uses to me lol
Like, one of the three postgame demons moves so erratic I can hardly tell which move is tied to kicks or punches and there's at least a few more like that.
I also kind of love using Alraune but I need to actually read what she does one of these days because I think all her attacks are delayed or something. My favorites are definitely Baal, M. Butterfly and the "second" postgame demon (you can get that one or the final one in either order but one is significantly easier to get than the other... Which I still didn't even get)

I posted this in the Switch thread but I'm gonna post it here, too. Cause I just can't get over how amazing this game is.

Bayonetta 3 might just be one of my favorite video games of all time.

The more I play it, the better it gets. And that's saying something, because it was already extremely good, even better than Bayo2 which I've long regarded as the best action game ever made.

There are some games that are just so incredibly good, all the time, every nano-second you're playing, you can't help but be astonished.

I can't believe how good this game is. It's essentially flawless. There's nothing I dislike about it. Absolutely nothing. Playing as Bayonetta is the most intense fun I've had in years, playing as Viola is surprisingly fun too, using block to slow time instead of dodge. Jeanne levels are super interesting with 2D stealth, and the boss fights are all over the place. Insane creativity.

I'm seriously going to need to re-assess my top 10 list, maybe even my top 5. Cause this game is freaking legendary
