Not every game has to be a concept no previous console was capable of. I'd estimate the vast majority of games on all consoles are concepts that could have been done on prior hardware. Nothing wrong with wanting that, if that's what you're looking for, but Ghosts of Yotei PS5 is nothing different than Ghosts of Tsushima on PS4. Halo Infinite is nothing different than Halo 5.
New games are simply new experiences. Try a gameplay gimmick never used bedore. Design new levels and mechanics never experimented with before. Just provide a different experience. That's all a game needs to do. Either it's fun, or it's not fun.
And yes, kids need games too. They haven't played every single Yoshi game since the SNES. They don't care about the game doing some generational breakthrough never before possible. They just want a fun game.
And I'd argue that's true for most people, kids or not.
@UpsideDownRowlet
I generally dislike 2D Kirby games, but I really loved Planet Robobot.
I also generally dislike 2D Yoshi games, but really loved Wooly World. Mainly disliked Crafted World due to the 2D cursor in a 3D space that just felt awkward to throw eggs with.
Mysterious Book looks promising so far. Art style definitely a return to form and reminds me of the original SNES entry. Here's to hoping the game is good. It doesn't have Baby Mario... that's a plus. And it won't have that weird 2D-3D cursor like Crafted World, either. So I'm definitely optimistic.
@Bolt_Strike Fair enough. We really need to learn more about Yoshi before we can make any certain judgments about the precise nature of its gameplay and its quality.

I do have to wonder if there's an issue with the 2D platformer genre as a whole, if there's just nowhere else for the genre to go and they've reached the end of their evolution (and if the genre is just feeling more tired because it's one of the oldest genres in gaming).
looks at the entire history of indie gaming lmao no
My personal opinion is that a lot of the bigger 2D platformers have pacing issue. They make levels at least feel like they take longer than they need to, like your time is being wasted consistently. Tropical Freeze is the biggest example since it has larger levels with more bonus levels that kill the pacing regularly. Just a terrible idea in an otherwise probably fantastic game. (huge reason I prefer Returns)
Wooly World though is the most tragic, because if they just figured out how to make exploring levels to 100% them even close to as well done as Yoshi's Island and didn't re-use bosses, it'd probably be awesome. Like its so close yet so far. The game isn't even that big, its probably exactly as long as Island, but playing it it felt like some levels went on for ages, especially with the chill vibes the music is going for.
It stands out my favorite HD 2D platformer, by some distance, is Rayman Legends, a game whose main campaign is relatively brief and instead relies on a variety of different, substantial extras. (also by far did the most to innovate, even if much of that innovation is Wii U specific) You have the campaign and then Mario Galaxy comet-like challenges for essentially every level, then the Origins levels, and then a weekly and daily challenge mode. So its almost like 4 smaller platformers in one, so it avoids much of those issues imo.
I kinda wish we all could at least wait & see how The Mysterious Book turns & let it stand on it's own merits rather wanting it to match up with Yoshi's Island...I'm getting tired of folks expecting sequels or new entries in a platformer series to match up to the good & highly praised ones. Seen too much of that over the years honestly.
@kkslider5552000 Speaking of 2d platformers...last "new" one I've played was Crafted World. Granted not my particular fav...that one goes to Wooly World. But Crafted World is still a competent platformer in its own right.

DO YOU HEAR ME!?!
@DanijoEX Gaming consoles are infinitely more powerful now than they were in the 1995 to the point where you could practically run SNES quality games on a cheap flip phone or something, why shouldn't I expect the quality to improve as the technology does? Switch 2 games should be blowing SNES games out of the water to the point where it should be no contest which is better. Not just with graphics and performance, but with more content, larger/better level design, and more QoL features.
I feel like I wouldn't mind watching Mysterious Book the show,
seems quite charming and stylised,
but as a game it doesn't look all that enticing, yet.
Man, I’m really looking forward to it. Sometimes I just enjoy nice and easy platformers. I like yoshi games far more than the Kirby games if you ask me. It’ll be a nice filler until the big June direct.
