I do have to wonder if there's an issue with the 2D platformer genre as a whole, if there's just nowhere else for the genre to go and they've reached the end of their evolution (and if the genre is just feeling more tired because it's one of the oldest genres in gaming).
looks at the entire history of indie gaming lmao no
My personal opinion is that a lot of the bigger 2D platformers have pacing issue. They make levels at least feel like they take longer than they need to, like your time is being wasted consistently. Tropical Freeze is the biggest example since it has larger levels with more bonus levels that kill the pacing regularly. Just a terrible idea in an otherwise probably fantastic game. (huge reason I prefer Returns)
Wooly World though is the most tragic, because if they just figured out how to make exploring levels to 100% them even close to as well done as Yoshi's Island and didn't re-use bosses, it'd probably be awesome. Like its so close yet so far. The game isn't even that big, its probably exactly as long as Island, but playing it it felt like some levels went on for ages, especially with the chill vibes the music is going for.
It stands out my favorite HD 2D platformer, by some distance, is Rayman Legends, a game whose main campaign is relatively brief and instead relies on a variety of different, substantial extras. (also by far did the most to innovate, even if much of that innovation is Wii U specific) You have the campaign and then Mario Galaxy comet-like challenges for essentially every level, then the Origins levels, and then a weekly and daily challenge mode. So its almost like 4 smaller platformers in one, so it avoids much of those issues imo.
I kinda wish we all could at least wait & see how The Mysterious Book turns & let it stand on it's own merits rather wanting it to match up with Yoshi's Island...I'm getting tired of folks expecting sequels or new entries in a platformer series to match up to the good & highly praised ones. Seen too much of that over the years honestly.
@kkslider5552000 Speaking of 2d platformers...last "new" one I've played was Crafted World. Granted not my particular fav...that one goes to Wooly World. But Crafted World is still a competent platformer in its own right.
I sell my famous Chesapeake Tupperware.

DO YOU HEAR ME!?!
@DanijoEX Gaming consoles are infinitely more powerful now than they were in the 1995 to the point where you could practically run SNES quality games on a cheap flip phone or something, why shouldn't I expect the quality to improve as the technology does? Switch 2 games should be blowing SNES games out of the water to the point where it should be no contest which is better. Not just with graphics and performance, but with more content, larger/better level design, and more QoL features.
I feel like I wouldn't mind watching Mysterious Book the show,
seems quite charming and stylised,
but as a game it doesn't look all that enticing, yet.
Man, I’m really looking forward to it. Sometimes I just enjoy nice and easy platformers. I like yoshi games far more than the Kirby games if you ask me. It’ll be a nice filler until the big June direct.
"A corpse, should be left well alone. Oh, I know very well how the secrets beckon so sweetly. Only an honest death will cure you now. Liberate you from your wild curiosity."
@Uncle_Franklin Which is a huge problem. What is the point of a Switch 2 if they could put what they're doing on Switch 1? That's why it's important to fully utilize the hardware and build on what you've done in the past, otherwise the entire concept of console generations falls apart. Why do I need to pay $500 to play games that just look and feel like games on the console I already own instead of just putting them on the console I already own in the first place?
well clearly the ps5 gen mostly got away with it so i don't think it's as huge of an issue as you assume. again, we've already reached a point where most mechanics and such are plenty possible - and i don't think a 2d platformer is gonna push the boundaries anytime soon.
eventually you just start making games for the new console anyways to drive sales. if you keep putting games on the old system because they could technically still work fine, what reason is there to buy the new one? not every game every dev is making is gonna push things enough to 100% justify being solely on a new console.
remember; your chicken parm is not safe around me!
As long as it's better than Crafted World, I'm in.
This. Since the music already sounds better, I'm already sure it will be.
If anything, I just think Mysterious Book might have very unconventional gameplay, like no boss battles or not much combat for that matter due to just exploring and interacting with creatures that aren't enemies per se, but it's still a little early.
@Dev-N I could see it having "boss" levels that are unconventional, like being an arena with a large creature and rather than fight it, you have to document its behaviors. We did see a large creature in the first trailer, that could be one such "boss".
Guys, if you are in the UK and you order the game from the Nintendo Store, digital or physical, you get a free Yoshi magnetic bookmark and tote bag! If you already ordered from the Nintendo store, they have already upgraded it!
Think it has to be through the store, not just via e-shop.
Art style looks pretty outstanding, but I'm still struggling to get a feel of the actual gameplay since these videos are mostly just demonstrative snippets topped with a narrorator that sounds like he's speaking to a room full of toddlers.
Not sold just yet outside the visuals, but what good is staring at a pretty picture if the game itself is a slow burn affair tailored towards a much younger audience and without a shred of challenge in sight? Hope I'm wrong!
