@IceClimbers I guess the theory is that anything announced in the Switch 1 Direct will be to fill the gap between now and Switch 2. If everything in the Direct releases in the next couple of months it could hint at an earlier release for Switch 2. On the other hand, if they pack the schedule to September/October that could hint at Switch 2 coming out around that time.

The Virtual Game Card page revealed there will be “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” versions of games.

I didn't think Switch 2 would get a summer release just because it hardly ever happens with consoles, but I do think it has a lot of advantages. The early adopters would be buying it anyway no matter when it releases, and as summer is traditionally a quieter period in gaming it gives Nintendo the chance to get any stock issues and scalpers out of the way before a big push for Christmas sales, and in Christmas the console will be more desirable with a bigger selection of available games.

Second week of June is my prediction.

@Coversnail
I've always wondered why summer wasn't more popular for video game consoles to release. Kids getting off school (at least here in the U.S.), time to sell through the initial allotment and get your act together for the holiday season, run a robust marketing campaign for your Fall titles, etc.

I get that the insane holiday rush of the previous decades is still ingrained in our minds, but it just seems to make more sense to release something like a game console late spring/early summer when your biggest target demographics actually have time to play it.

US release months of Nintendo consoles:

  • Mar: Switch, 3DS
  • June: GBA
  • July: Game Boy
  • August: Virtual Boy, SNES
  • September: N64
  • October: NES
  • November: Wii U, Wii, DS, GameCube

Half of them have been in the fall, but I doubt Nintendo is attached to that timeline if it makes sense to release earlier. November in particular feels far too late for this release.

@FishyS Now that Nintendo does global releases for their products (especially since they don’t region lock them anymore), it’s gotta come out at the same month for the entire world.

Interesting.

There's no way this thing is coming out any later than June, in my opinion. When do those Switch 2 Experiences stop? Early June or something like that? It would be super weird to have all of those and then wait a couple more months before releasing it.

(I know you weren't saying it's coming in the Fall, I'm just reassuring myself mostly lol)

June is my personal guess also but Nintendo is hard to predict lately. According to the calendar within the Nintendo Today app it looks like May 31 (or June 1 in some time zones) is the final Nintendo experience. So I would think that would rule out May but leave June wide open.

Anyone knows what it means by “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition,” like if it’s a free or small-fee update that can be downloaded when the game is inserted on a Switch 2 or it’s a separate version that has to be bought separately?

I’m hoping for the former but I’m not sure if it will be that.

Nobody knows for sure yet.

The worst-case scenario is that they make us pay full price for “Switch 2 edition” games. The best-case is that they offer enhancements for free.

Personally, I think they’re gonna tie it to having an NSO subscription while still letting you piecemeal purchase them if you wish or don’t have NSO. Maybe like 10ish bucks? Hopefully no more than that unless they’re doing a full remaster or something, which for Switch 1 games would be… dystopian to say the least lol (though gaming these days does seem to be like 90% remasters, some not even that old)

When I sit to think about this, though, how many first-party games beyond the obvious ones like BotW, Tears, and maybe the Xenoblade games really need much of an upgrade?

The live events can run parallel with the console's release, as it has happened before, so a May release is not out of the window.

And yeah, unpredictable or not, there is absolutely no way that the console is not launching until the end of June, most likely in the first half.
