@Grumblevolcano That’s probably not a great naming convention for Xbox either. Xbox 720 and Xbox 1080 sounds like the system’s resolution output. Today’s internet climate would definitely use it against Microsoft.
I think Microsoft were in a problematic situation no matter what they did naming the Xbox consoles.
@MrCarlos46 That’s what I was getting at, I’m not sure Microsoft could have come up with a decent naming convention unless they totally changed the system name each time, like Sega used to do but that’s incredibly risky too.

I agree with @FragRed , XBox 720 in the 2010s would've screwed them over because it sounds like XBox 720p. I don't really believe that it would've hurt them in the console wars sense, that sort of stuff doesn't really filter down to Joe Average. But it would've painted a bad marketing image essentially calling out a lower resolution in your name when the marketing was trying to push 4K
I think Microsoft in general painted themselves into a corner with the 360. I can see why they did it at the time. 360 is bigger than 3 and Nintendo was talking about a revolution so by doing a 360 they could steal a bit of that. At least near the launch. It worked. But it did make it impossible to name the XBOne
In any case, straight numbering generally makes sense. And no @rallydefault , me pointing out that numbering is common isn't desperation. It's common. It's everywhere. And it's everywhere because it works. Especially if what you want to communicate is "this is all the things you like about this other thing and it can run all the same things the older one can, it's just newer and better"

I think going with Xbox 360 is what left Microsoft cursed with choosing weird names for Xbox consoles forever.
"Nintendo Switch 2" is the perfect name for the Switch successor. Yes, it is boring, but it is straightforward and simple to everyone. This supposed leaked logo also works too:
Hardcore SNES fans may hate me for saying this, but even something like "Super Nintendo Switch" isn't a good name as that could be interpreted as a Switch "Pro" model rather than a Switch successor.

I only considered the name Nintendo Switch Snap because of the magnetic Joy-Cons.
Yeah, nah. The US SNES colours are trash and should be forgotten. PAL/Japan SNES or bust
I’m wondering if that would also include the US when you said that part.
As an American, I also prefer the colors of the Japanese/European SNES and think the purple/lavender colors of the US SNES look inferior, but I wouldn’t say outright abandon them, and I doubt Nintendo of America would even consider doing that. This was part of why I thought of a Switch 2 SNES edition should actually include the US and JP/EU color schemes. Also keeps the design more global considering the Switch 2 will also be region-free (I don’t see Nintendo going back to region locking their hardware).
Here was how I thought the color schemes could be used for such edition:
The L Joy-Con’s D-Pad buttons get the purple and lavender colors of the US SNES, while the R Joy-Con uses the JP/EU colors for the ABXY buttons.
IDK if anyone else would agree with this, but this way of using both color schemes is better than releasing separate region variants (even though they wouldn’t have any region locking).
@MrCarlos46
At a guess I would think NoA at the time was trying to paint a specific image of what the SNES was to counter Sega's marketing. Sega was pushing for the edgy, masculine, slick teen thing with their shiny black plastic. The coloured buttons didn't fit with that. NoA was wrong, the coloured buttons were great
I'm fairly confident that if they released original NA colouring for JoyCons they would sell significantly less than the Japan/PAL SNES colouring. Even in the US. And outside of the US I don't think anyone is going to pick the NA colours over the Japan/PAL colouring. I'd also note that they did the coloured buttons on other consoles since. N64, GC, New 3DS
NES is different because the NA colouring was also used in other regions. And it's also quite nice

Only 2 variants of the New 3DS XL got the colored buttons: The Pikachu Yellow Edition, and the Japanese/European version of the SNES Edition

Looking at my SNES, I think the purple/lavender/whatever on the console itself is not great, but the controller buttons aren't offensive. I like having a half and half like you said. I do hope they jazz up the button colors this time around - it's a small thing, but it adds tons of character.

Would this also apply if they combined the US and JP/EU colors?
Is the internet being unreasonable to expect a console to be revealed and then launched within 3 months?
Usually I would say 3 months is crazy because you'd risk having everything about the new console being leaked before reveal. But, well, I think it's fair to say that's not something Nintendo is really worried about given the deafening silence while everything about Switch 2 is being leaked..... so...... who knows....
@skywake I'm not sure if you are being over dramatic. The Switch leaked pretty much in it's entirety and it hasn't harmed that in hindsight. They just need to not comment and ignore the free buzz. There is always an element of doubt with rumours (I mean, people seem to be earning a decent living from them) and besides, when it is revealed I reckon there will be an overiding sense of "yes this is exactly what I wanted." (Which let's face it, is pretty rare from Nintendo lol - I mean that in a good way, they tend to do something noone has thought of and THEN you decide you want it lol.)
The Switch 2 grifters have already lined up folk to be clicking through January - typically a quiet month of the year. It's quite reamarkable really. A small part of me hopes it is a 2026 reveal just to see how much stamina these guys (and the folk watching) have lol. (But only a miniscule part, mind.)
@GrailUK
To be fair, the leaks about the NX were napkin sketches and (incorrect) guestimates of what the SoC might be based on what NVidia had on the shelf. And they gave it about four and a half months between reveal and release. With Switch 2 the specs have been fairly visible for months, the SoC has been known for literally years and we're not seeing accessories and actual photos.... but they don't seem to care. No statements, deafening silence
So yeah, if you had asked me last year? I would've said 3 months between reveal and release would be nuts. Mostly because a release requires getting all your ducks in a row and the pure logistics of manufacture and distribution risks leaks. Which kills the surprise. But it's clear they don't seem to be that worried about the leaks so who knows? Maybe it will be 3 months?
FWIW.... I still think it'll launch mid-May with a reveal in late January. I just think it would be foolish to outright dismiss the people who are hyper optimistic about an imminent reveal and a launch in late March or something. Because if nothing else it's clear that nobody has any idea what their release plans are
@skywake Don't get me wrong, they can reveal it in January and launch it the next day, I'll be there. But this has been going on since 2020 in one sku or another lmao. My interest in the Switch 2 is growing (which coincidentally is the polar opposite of my interest in rumours and 'leaks'. Especially towards anyone calling it infomation lol.)
