Who knows if that’s actually true or it’s just him upping the number to prevent Nintendo from taking the throne from the PS2 as best-selling console worldwide
Either way, Nintendo really needs to sell as many Switch units as possible this holiday season and for the first few months of 2025 if they want to outsell the PS5
There are a couple of reasons why (I reckon) we aren't getting Switch 2 news this year.
1) They said this fiscal. If it was this year they would have said later this year. (I happen to think Nintendo are THAT transparent and I don't need to overthink anything so I can grift a few more weeks on Youtube with Switch 2 gossip..)
2) Nintendo are a much more traditional company than Microsoft and Sony these days. As such, retail is still much more valuable to them. Announcing Switch 2 hurts retailers. People's jobs.
3) Companies tend to focus on 1 thing in a certain space. Hence having a road map for years in advance. Making this holiday as successful as possible whilst managing the Switch 2 messaging to me seems needless work. Switch is still selling well (even though folk seem to have mistaken a natural decline in the final years as a death throw lol. - It's numbers are still higher than a conventional final few months.
I reckon January would not have maximum impact as folk tend to be skint after the holidays. Hence January usually being quiet for announcements and big name titles tend to avoid it.
So February / March gets my money. A full fat Direct with some games leading up to launch date for the Switch and games for Switch 2. Not sure if there will be cross gen games (I reckon some will just work and others are for 2 only - but there will be a cross generation Direct period for next year. (It will be a sad day when it finally isn't featured.)They will have had buckets of time to make enough units to battle scalpers for when the console launches later in the year. By which time, who knows. Switch might have beaten DS or PS2 and Nintendo can say it's their best selling console / best selling console of all time. And money can't buy that marketing! And if it's not going the blue ocean route like the original did, then that marketing is super important.
I. AM. ALWAYS. WRONG! Lol. (Just like to offer a different take if I can.)
Edit - Also Mario and Luigi also looks faar too good to be a throwaway title. It's not exactly a Princess Peach Showtime (don't mean to be harsh, I haven't played it, hope you know what I mean.)
Edit 2 - Seriously though, the more people that buy into thias, the quicker they will announce it to surprise everyone hahah!
Edit 3 - Really sorry. Didn't realise I yapped on for that long!
@Gryffin My guess (and that's literally all it is lol) is October (and imagine my joy if it's sooner!). I wonder if they'll cue it up with the Mario movie lol. Then there won't be long to wait for the next Zelda mainline game and the movie (early 2026 - marchish?) Hey it's a road map of sorts
Full disclosure - I have no idea how branching out into movies would work best. Whether they tie them together or space the games and films out. I'm sure they'll experiment with this.
Don't forget, if it's not this October, then Youtube will be speculating if it gets announced in the next fiscal meeting in November. Because...y'know, makes sense that any serious investors outside of folk dabbling thinking it gives them the right to know everything, would want to jeopardise a successful holiday season lol.
I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
I know this maybe unrelated to the thread (if I have to, I might change the title), but you know one thing they should do with the Switch 2:
Upgrade Nintendo eShop to the My Nintendo Store so you can not only purchase games (in physical or digital format), but also purchase hardware and other merchandise and explore sales and deals straight from your Switch 2.
@MrCarlos46 No one (not even Sony) has recognised 160M outside of Jim Ryan. He was likely rounding up talking off the ciff.
Don't worry, he'll round it up to 165 if Switch gets close 😆
I'm hoping for an April/May release just because Switch is showing it's age with one of their biggest games of the year having performance issues and all the sub-par ports lately (Zelda for example is 86 on metacritic but lots of reviewers docked it for performance so the identical game might have been in GotY territory on Switch 2).
I still think an October reveal is plausible to help calm their investors at the half-year Nov 5th financial meeting and to get in front of the continuous leaks and whatnot. As others have said, much better for Nintendo if people save their pennies for a Switch 2 next year rather than buying a steam deck or ps5 (or even a Switch 1) this year. The fact that Nintendo has the largest cash reserve of any Japanese company means they can coast a little this holiday as long as it helps their long term plans.

I'm very curious how well it will do. Peach has sold 1 or 2 million, but it's been 11 years since Mario and Luigi sold that well; the sales of that series are very hit-or-miss and people may be worn out by so many Mario RPGs in a row (I kinda am personally). Then again, Switch is sometimes a series kingmaker so who knows, maybe it will sell a ton.
Don't forget, if it's not this October, then Youtube will be speculating if it gets announced in the next fiscal meeting in November.
That's the same day as the US presidential election, so I think there is zero chance they would make a major announcement that day unless they wanted no one to notice...

@MrCarlos46 It would be handy to have a link to Nintendo store, but that would need to be different for every franchisee in all the different regions / countries. And what if they change hands. It's open to inconsistancy.
@MrCarlos46 Nintendo would need to be the proprietor of the retail stores for it to be consistant. If not they are selling something they don't strictly have final say on and if one country offers better free gifts than another, then you get a disparity. It's just not...cool.
