Didnt think much about it on switch 1, but now that SW2 is so quick, powerfull and screen is bigger, it would be nice with YouTube, Twitch, Netflix etc. I dont use my iPad anymore, and would love apps on the SW2.

It's not unthinkable, but it sure is funny. It's a game console.

The Wii trained us all to watch streaming video on Nintendo devices.

That said, I used Crunchyroll and YouTube on Switch 1 whenever I traveled. Switch 2 is even better - do I want to watch a movie on my tiny phone or on a honk'n big Switch 2 screen? The 3rd option is to buy yet another portable device and drag all 3 with me which is a definite no just to watch videos.

Edit: Sometimes I get random friend requests on Switch from strangers and it is both shocking and hilarious how many of them have like 500 hours of playtime on YouTube.

It may not be Nintendo at fault as Google are getting a lot more aggressive about their control and revenue. They are locking down apps in the next operating system so must be licensed/approved so people will have far less control of their google apps and not be able to install apks of their choice without rooting etc. It could well be Linux is the only open fully customisable operating system soon.

Personally I can never watch youtube with all the ads so wouldn't install it anyway. Youtube on consoles is best avoided in my opinion, life is too short for all the adverts and nonsense.

Yea, most modern consoles have had this video streaming apps. That's great.

It doesn't change the fact that it's a game console. It's supposed to play games. If it gets other apps, that's great, if it doesn't, that's also great. Cuz, again... it's supposed to play games.

People caring this much about it is funny to me.

@rallydefault I feel that Microsoft and Sony's multiplatform strategies push gaming towards a setup where there's 1 device that does everything. Nintendo's not sharing their games so Switch 2 has the best chance of being that device which does everything.

@rallydefault I think another issue is people want/expect Switch 2 to be superior to OG Switch 1 in all ways (besides easiness to carry around 😆 ). So people will complain about every app it doesn't have which Switch 1 had, battery life not being superior, any game which didn't survive the path of back compatibility to be playable on Switch 2, etc.

There was a period of time when I used the Switch to watch youtube because my old tv had a janky youtube app that barely worked. And before that, I used the Wii U because I didn't have a smart tv at all. These days I would have no need for it and I suppose most people with a Switch 2 has a decent tv, but I can imagine someone using it in handheld mode to watch youtube in certain situations. I can also see why it isn't a high priority though.

I get the impression that kids who have a Lite use it that way a lot too.

True, true. And I get it: the first Switch had it, so this one just HAS to because obviously lol

But yea, I don’t know. I use my phone for YouTube and stuff like that.

Hmm..

Personally, i've kind of moved on from wanting apps on my gaming console. When the original Switch launched I wanted YouTube and Netflix and all that. But nowadays I just used my phone, because it's so much more convenient and has way better battery life, and the smaller screen doesn't bother me.

Not that I would be against it because I understand there are people out there that genuinely want that functionality. I just don't care about it anymore. Which is kind of weird to say because 8 years ago I was all gungho about it.

I personally am hopeful that Switch 2 will get YouTube (Switch 2 YouTube is already in the works) and Crunchyroll eventually.

Nintendo probably wanted a share of the advertising revenue for youtube but google refused or wasn't enough for Nintendo. I always use adblockers for youtube anyway. On pc I have a chrome extension that blocks ads and on android I use smart tube next. I never, ever use youtube apps on consoles as its always forced adverts. I know if you have a modded console you can block ads, on a modded Switch 1 you could run android and then run smart tube next or similar. So when I get a Switch 2 I'll have absolutely no interest in youtube on it anyway as it would be such an annoying youtube experience.

Minor thread necromancy so sorry for the late reply but reading through the post I had some thoughts

I think this is some of it. If you have a phone you don't really need YouTube on the Switch at all, you have your phone. If you have control over your own TV you also probably don't care because your TV likely has YouTube built in

But if you're too young to have/need a smartphone and are still living with your parents where they have some control over the main displays in the house? Notably, also a solid use case for the Switch itself I suspect given it doesn't lock up the TV. Then YouTube on the Switch is probably pretty important

For me? I don't get it. But I also have my own house with my own TV, a phone I carry with me and an ancient iPad that moves around the house. All of which do probably a better job of YouTube than the Switch could

@skywake I have a phone and a telly where I can watch Youtube too, but I like I explained in this thread, my Switch OLED has a much bigger and better screen than my phone, so it's been really nice using that to watch videos while on the bed, while commuting, etc. And since the Switch 2 has an even bigger screen with a higher resolution, I was hoping Nintendo would actually add more streaming apps to the eShop so people could take advantage of the screen. I certainly wasn't expecting that they wouldn't even support Youtube on the new console.

Smartphones comes with non standard screen sizes, so videos end being shown at smaller size then screen size and stretch function cutts of parts of video usually top & bottom, so that's why YT is a lot more appealing for me on NS1/OLED/NS2, because you can watch at bigger screen in hand/s due their standard screen size!
