@WaffleKnight I mean, if it's not delayed to 2021 along with the actual Olympics I'll be shocked.

Stop assuming Nintendo cares about everything their rivals do. That's for Sony, Microsoft, and the fans who don't know how to chill. Nintendo does their own thing.

They have no choice but to care, even if they don't like admitting it. A significant chunk of their audience own multiple consoles, and so those people are going to be constantly in a situation where they buy either a Nintendo game, or a PS4/Xbox/PC game.

I only buy about 4 full priced games every year. This year I already know I'm getting FF7 and Xenoblade Remaster. The other 2 are completely up for grabs for whoever grabs my attention the most. If Nintendo didn't announce anything before E3, well then I'm gonna get The Last of Us 2. But if Nintendo announce something I really care about for a summer/fall release, well then I'll probably buy that instead, and get TLOU2 a year later when it's half the price.

There are gonna be millions of people in a similar situation, and Nintendo knows that.

@Dezzy I think you're right. Big game spenders like myself are in a minority. 😋 Every company is probably keeping an eye on the competition, even Nintendo.

That doesn't mean they have to make the exact same consoles and games, but it would be foolish not to care what the others are up to.

And if we're talking in an even wider competetive sense – the competition about our attention – it's not just about video games these days in an age of, for example, smart phones and streaming.

This is just what I believe. Doesn't mean it's 100% correct, but I don't think Nintendo is walking around in their own special world minding their own business. Trends, demands, life schedules... There are a lot of things to keep an eye on.

I believe Nintendo will announce something big soon. Now they've released their biggest spring game for 2020. There has to be at least something prepared for the summer/early autumn.

It's 1pm UK time and no Direct announcement, starting to look unlikely there's a Direct this week.

Just port metroid prime, 3D world, wind waker, punch out, fzero GX. Offer them at a slight discount and then next year you have your big hitters.

@Grumblevolcano Why did people assume Nintendo were going to do a Direct? They just said we should expect potential update delays for their latest game, I can imagine they’ll hold out for a Direct if they don’t need to do one. Animal Crossing is obviously going to be seen to keep them going and I imagine they’re focus is elsewhere while there’s a worldwide pandemic that’s shutting down entire countries.

@FragRed Rumours combined with Switch's future being barren are the main reasons why some believe there'll be one this week.

I'm starting to think, that if there's no general Direct in March (or maybe the beginning of April?), then we won't see one until June. Think about it: Why would they host two general Directs within 1,5 months after a gap of 8 month? So I guess Nintendo just has nothing to announce for the first half of the year. 😕

If there isn't an announcement tomorrow, I don't think we'll get one this month.

@WaffleKnight As it’s March 24 already, I think you’re right! I still have hope for an announcement tomorrow, but I’m starting to think Covid-19 has put everything on the back burner. It’s starting to seem more likely that we won’t see anything till June.

June better be good... ^_^

I don't see how much work can get done at home. Id rather them not rush games and instead push them back to next year. In the meantime give us ports and some Nintendo selects. (Kirby, arms, 1-2 switch should all get a 50% discount)

I’m perfectly fine and understanding when it comes to delays. Given the real-world circumstances. Game delays i think are to be expected.
The thing for me, and I think for many people, is we literally do not know anything that’s coming. That’s whats causing people to get anxious and I’m sure will affect investors.

Quite literally, apart from a remake, Nintendo’s first party slate is a blank slate for the foreseeable future. The Illumination movie, the theme parks lands, jeans, legos, opening a recently new official store are all nice and will play well with investors, but just as it is with many other businesses, it is not the core of Nintendo’s business.

I think if you look, for instance at the WiiU virtual console library, most of that library is now on Switch eShop in some form or another. What IS missing is Nintendo’s back catalog. Even with the SNES games alone, they could lean into their still deep (and much loved) first party back catalog to make up for delays.

Sony is capping off the first half of the year with their last big exclusives and titles. Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Last of Us Part 2, and Ghost of Tsushima. And then they’ll be already hyping up PlayStation 5.
Xbox can afford to play the long game because they are only a smaller portion of a much larger company, plus they have Halo Infinite, Gears Tactics, and probably another Forza this year, and they have Project XCloud and Series X launching.

I know and fully get Nintendo marches to the beat of its own drum, but even they cannot completely ignore the competition. The issue I’m raising is we have to atleast know what is coming in the next 6-9 months at the very least. Delays or no delays. Both for their customers and their investors.

@Neoguardian86 do you really think they won't have any releases through the year. Panic should be saved for viruses with no real cure, not for unannounced games. As for the competition it's ok to lose the battle (2020) but win the war (2021+).

@sixrings A lot of work can get done at home. I'm a programmer who's been working remotely for the past four years, it's not as bad as people make it sound. Honestly, I'm mostly worried about the music if anything, most of what it takes to make a video game can be done remotely with ease.

If they don't announce something tomorrow, I hope they at least explain what's going on. If the virus has meant they're delaying most of their releases, they need to say something.

It's definitely NOT ok for Nintendo to do worse than Playstation when the PS4 is in its final year, and the Switch is at the peak (or what should be the peak) of it's lifecycle.
