That Direct was great if you own a PS5, and have games other than those shown coming.

I'll say what I've said elsewhere:

@Haruki_NLI this is exactly my takeaway as well. If you’re avid in maintaining a physical library, then the Partner Showcase just gave you a better reason to stick with PS5 for third party games. I liked a number of the announcements, but am less than interested to pick them up for Switch 2 if game key cards are the physical option for their releases.

The one exception for me is PvZ. I would pick it up digitally for S2 because it works well in mobile form.

@Enriesto It's interesting that we are already seeing substantial support from parties who largely ignored Switch, even with day and date release party, which is very surprising.

But likewise a lot of the companies who did support Switch seem absent.

@Haruki_NLI I’m not surprised at those absences (I’m assuming you’re referring to FromSoft and bigger IPs from Square Enix?), since it was a short presentation, and they’d prefer to time updates for larger releases in a way that gives them the most traction - which to me loudly signals a general Direct in the next couple months some time.

I was.... whelmed by this Direct. I know people were talking up the possibility of all of the Microsoft games coming at once but I feel like these people were just setting themselves up for disappointment. Broadly there wasn't anything in here that blew me away. But it was still nice to see a fairly decent amount of support on display with, broadly, most of the games looking fairly decent in terms of image quality. It was mid sure, but I was also expecting it to be a bit mid

Also I don't understand how Just Dance is still a thing with yearly editions. These aren't even new songs. It's like hooray, Smash Mouth - All Stars is in Just Dance now. I know I'm probably not the target demographic but even so, does anyone actually care?

Star Wars just looks...ugh

This is true. But it's also a game that requires RT and on similarly powered devices (eg the Deck) runs at sub-native with FSR and Frame Gen at 25fps with dips into sub 20fps. So the fact that it's running on Switch 2 at all is a bit of a minor miracle. A miracle no doubt assisted by NVidia's better upscaler and RT efficiency

But yeah, outside of some of the more landscape scenes and especially when you were in close quarters it looked pretty rough. Lots of noise on characters in particular. Probably not the platform to play this game on. But as a tech demo it's not bad

Pretty snazzy direct for me. lots of new games I am excited for and ports that show support from 3rd parties.

And Virtua Fighter 2!

It's funny how the biggest games were the least exciting ones on this. This is the state of AAA 3rd party gaming, more or less.

It does feel very much like a 3rd party direct when they did all the cool announcements in April and there's still gonna be a September Direct.

People who hate on HD-2D games are weird and alone.

Pacman World 2 was good but not great, I don't entirely get the nostalgia for that one. (always preferred Ms. Pacman Maze Madness tbh)

Game key cards should be fought against because beyond any other reason, its stupid to buy a physical game and then waste the space on the SD card you paid too much for.

I for one don't "hate" them, I just think the first time it was done it was interesting but now it's much of a muchness. It's like when New SMB launched on DS and it was kinda interesting, exciting, actually new. A 2.5D Mario, neat. But then we just kept getting them and after the third one it was just "oh, this style again"

I'd just like to see developers do something more interesting with it. Do something different. There are already a couple of these kinds of games on Switch 2 already and this Direct announced another 2 or 3? I don't mind them in isolation and I'd be interested in picking one of them up but..... they all just seem to blend together

I'm excited about Monster Hunter Stories 3. And Elliot looked interesting.

There were 4 other games I might get from that direct but they were all ones we already knew about(shinobi, hyrule warriors, etc)

Decent direct but not thrilling.

I don't entirely disagree on not wanting them to just rely on the exact same art style, but the idea that the NSMB sequels are even in the same breath of interesting art styles is absurd. I didn't hate NSMB's style because it was samey, I hated it because it was samey in the least interesting way they could get away with for such high profile games. Even the original NSMB has a more interesting aesthetic, if maybe largely because of the charm DS limitations. Even 3D Land takes generic Mario and makes it notably more visually appealing imo (even before the far more creative 3D World happened).

Also I've played Live a Live and it absolutely is distinct enough compared to Octopath or Triangle Strategy.

But yeah, at some point they should try not to over-rely on it either. There was plenty of distinct differences in how SNES era Square games looked like, they could do a little more than that too.

The correct NSMB comparison tbh, is that Nintendo's most poorly thought out choice that really killed people's interest in it was doing 3 of them in one year, which when you take into account DQ 1 and 2 are gonna be in one package, is basically what SE is doing.

They said 'Winter' for Warriors but 2025 for Kirby and Prime, so my guess is:

  • August - Prime 4 direct, drag x drive, Kirby DLC
  • September - general direct with special Mario anniversary portion, Prime 4 release
  • October - Pokemon
  • Anywhere Sep - Nov - Mario 40th game
  • Nov or Dec - Kirby Air Riders
  • Jan - Tomodachi Life or rhythm heaven
  • Feb - Hyrule Warriors, a February direct.
  • Later 2026 - The missing Tomodachi/rhythm heaven, Splatoon spinoff, other games we don't know
