What frustrates me the most is the removal of Kite and Tire customizations, which allowed you to customize your Kart's driving characteristics to your liking.
These kite and tire customizations would have been perfect rewards/collectables for the Free roam mode and would have made the doing the open world actually a million times more interesting.
Now it just makes the gameplay very boring, simplistic and bland.
Just annoying streamlining decision by Nintendo to cater to the 3 year olds.
They are clearly targeting the smallest kids with this game now.
@bixente Maybe a bit of hyperbole of me, but what I meant is that they slashed the entire Kart customization from Mario Kart World.
All karts are the same now, just cosmetic unlocks now. Which is just boring. It just removes all excitement and desire to unlock stuff.
It was just so cool and fun, to unlock all those different tire and kite customizations in Mario Kart 8 and that you could mix and match them with any cart, to both customize the looks of your kart as well as change/tune the driving characteristics.
It was a totally unnecessary change they didn't had to do. It's just a shame and like I said, it could have made Free roam actually interesting and worthwhile doing.
@Bigmanfan How do you pull up a map? Maybe I haven't progressed enough to see a map? I've barely scratched the surface of the game. The only map I've seen is the load screen map and the mini map while driving.
First. I looove this game.
But I agree. The only thing that bothers me is no 3 lap (classic) GP. And online is weird. You basically play the in between courses 67% of the time and the actual real courses feel like they don't exist really.
Nintendo really needs to implement "classic" modes offline and online.
Small correction. Apparently you can select 3 lap courses online. When choosing a course you can press the plus button and select it that way.
I am loving this game so far. My main gripes are that when you are paying with Intermissions on you can't make it a smooth transition--you have to finish a set, check the score, and then carry on. I would prefer if it were a little popup in the corner: "Here is your position, now keep going!" In addition, I want more costumes for more characters! And more to actually do in Free Roam. Otherwise, tho, a really fun time... My ranking for now is
Wii
3DS
World
But that's because I haven't had much time with this one yet lol!
I heard someone else say this, and I think it sums up the game perfectly: this is more of an arcade racer rather than more of a sim or stat-based racer (not that any MK games are sims lol but you get it).
The focus here is more on the chaos of large-scale races and the new variety in gameplay options rather than finding the “best” stat builds and executing small tracks the same way every time. Personally, I enjoy this slight shift in focus, but clearly others on here aren’t enjoying it lol
It also helps to play a game for more than an hour or two haha
This game is fantastic! I am just doing free roam. And it looks sooo good! I didn’t realize the environment was destructible as well (crashed into a fence and it broke). And the music… I don’t know how Nintendo keeps doing this to me. I don’t even like Mario Kart like that! Just realized the mini map is 3D and the other racers are driving around as well. I stalked Mario for a bit. Yeah bump the races. I am going to live in free roam.

I'm a Dream Fighter. Perfume is Love, Perfume is Life.
What is everyone's favorite tracks so far? For me, its Far Away Oasis, Dino Dino Jungle, Great ? Block ruins and Acorn Heights. I also really love the Peach Beach remake.
I'm in the vast minority here but what I like most about this game is it seems to have stripped a few things back. As in, they've done away with the special tyres and gliders which makes it feel more 'classic'. What frustrated me about 8 Deluxe was I simply couldn't keep up with all the combinations. This feels achievable.
I do however agree that the open world style of GP means one lap is essentially just driving to the next course, which, IMO, misses the mark.
Knockout mode is brutal as well in 150cc - but not impossible. One minor f*** up can cost you a gold cup. And knockout mode in 100cc is pretty easy. There's no in-between.
Nonetheless, I'm really enjoying it. Probably the most since Mario Kart DS or Double Dash.
I finished getting 3* on Grand Prix and Knockout Tour last night so now I've moved onto playing some online Knockout Tour races which are pure chaos and I'm all for it.
I haven't tried online VS races online yet so I haven't seen exactly how they work. Has anyone tried it and know if you can set it to be just regular laps?
