I got two races in last night before I conked out lol

Animations are so cool. Feedback does feel different from 8, yea, but in general the button assignments are the same as far as I can tell. The wall riding and "free jumping" (whatever you wanna call that move) are certainly gonna take practice.

So, what is the button mapping for Mario Kart World?
Does it feel same as Mario Kart 8?

No good deed
Will I do
AGAIN...!!!

@Anti-Matter
It's exactly the same.

ZR for jumping/tricking, ZL for items/horn. A to go, B to stop/reverse. X for rearview.

You can now charge up a little hop and ride rails and walls. It's gonna take practice, but it's super fun.

I've been playing it with my daughter, just knocking out the 50cc cups. It's definitely too slow at that speed, so it makes the wider roads feel a bit boring. I think the higher speeds will "speed" things up (lol) and make it more hectic.

Is free roam only in online mode or do you need to do a certain amount of cups first?

*edit never mind, you select map.

I think the word for this at the moment is "potential". The world needs to be filled out with more compelling content, and the new abilities need to be adjusted slightly to make it just a tad easier to jump in and out of wall riding. Im okay with abilities being for the experts, but they actuslly made it so it doesnt actually feel fun to pull off. More like just tense...

Graphics are nice, music is friggin incredible.

So disappointed so far. The open world gimmick is wrecking this game. 2/3 of most courses is now driving in a straight line to the course. Only one lap around Toad’s Factory, Shy Guy Bazaar, Wario Stadium, Airship Fortress, etc. I loved these courses but this game is not giving them ANY justice. Hope they make an update where I can just do 3 laps around the 4 courses in grand priz mode. Don’t know what they were thinking, but very boring so far. I’ll be going back to Mari Kart 8 deluxe…

Yeah, this really sucks.

The game in general feels slower than 8, maybe it's that the tracks are too big? This is the first MK where I actually want 200cc lol. The handling feels worse too, turning is more sluggish than 8.

I think this game is going to end up heavily patched in the upcoming months. BoTw this aint.

I am almost done with Grand Prix mode, and I'm feeling extremely underwhelmed by this game. It just isn't good. The courses really suffer from the focus being put on the Open World, to the point where most of them feel incredibly bland. I'm not a fan of how 2/3 laps are spent in-between courses either, as the long stretches of road get incredibly boring.

The Open World is fine, but it isn't impressive. I spent some time in free-roam just doing challenges, and it feels like I've been getting the same ones over and over (feels like Korok Seeds with somehow even less variation between the challenges). I don't know how much longer I'll mess around with this mode.

I hate how the allocation for character costumes is so poorly thought out. None of the enemy characters you can race as get costumes- which was a given.. but even the mainstay characters like Toad, Pauline, and DK get horrible costume choices. It can range from a character getting 9 costumes, or a character getting only one singular one- which makes the food mechanic pointless outside of it acting like another mushroom.

On top of that, the thing that's been frustrating me the most is just how the UI is designed. This game has probably the worst character select screen out of any Mario Kart game I've ever played. It's extremely unorganized, and most of the pages are full of costumes when they don't need to be. It feels like bloat that really could've been simplified a bit. I guess they wanted to give the illusion that there were tons of playable characters by making all the costumes take a character slot- just like they utilize the power of illusion in order to make the game feel like it has more courses than it does with the in-between routes. I sure do love the perception of value, and how the game costs 80 dollars for content that feels less fun than something you can play on the same console for less!

@VoidofLight I'm with you right now, this is not the evolution of Mario Kart it was made out to be and the lack of costumes for many characters just screams DLC to me.

I think I've been spoiled by Forza Horizon's take on an open world racing game and was expecting to drive around in Free-Roam, come upon a course and be able to start a Grand Prix or race. Having it as a separate mode with nothing to do in it other than collect stickers I'll never use is pretty poor.

For a launch game, it's not quite as bad as Wii U's NSMBU, but it's close.

There is much to like about the game, the soundtrack especially, but the issues are too glaringly obvious to overlook, no matter how much people will jump on us for daring to criticise a Mario Kart game.

Crimson_Ridley

VoidofLight

@Crimson_Ridley Yeah. I don't think it's the worst launch title. It's definitely a better game than something like NSMBU. However- I don't think it holds up alongside something like Mario Kart 8.. which sucks, given I like the movement mechanics for World. The ability to jump with the Kart and ride onto walls/railing is amazing. I honestly wish the game utilized hopping rails more often while grinding- like they did with DK Spaceport.

I haven't played Forza Horizon, but I feel like MK World would've benefited way more if they had more to unlock through exploration. Maybe locking characters behind the open world, or certain karts. Having more varied P missions would help as well. Just anything outside of getting stickers that don't really do much outside of provide a slight cosmetic flair.

I think we're definitely going to get DLC, at least given the lack of costumes for DK is suspicious. Maybe they're planning free updates that'll happen down the road that adds in more costumes or something.. as lame as that is.

@VoidofLight Same here. I did some Grand Prix races and it feels very much like Mario Kart 8.

The free roam mode I am most disappointed with. It just feels like a useless gimmick, just to jump on the Open world train.... all you can do is drive around aimlessly (which gets old real fast) and do some Blue coin power up challenges. That's it really.
It just offers you a faster way to collect coins and unlock everything.

rallydefault

Huh. I’m actually liking it the more I’m playing it. The “open road” portions between the tracks aren’t as empty if you actually try to ride rails and walls and stuff, and there are tons of secret paths. It has a much higher skill ceiling than 8, in my opinion.

Also, none of this applies to 50cc stuff. 50cc is straight up boring regardless lol

I found the option to race 3 laps in vs…but it’s buried and limited. Grand Prix should offer the option for legacy (3 laps) and open world options (single player, multiplayer, and online). If the classic 3-lap isn’t the default option, it should be easy to access that mode. Hope Nintendo does a patch to fix this (and add stuff to do in free roam…including a story mode).

raymond23

Pattingly

@raymond23 It's so frustrating that you can't do 3 laps of every level. It's like the game is so fun but with this one detail that drives me crazy. I would be so much more into if I could just sit back and enjoy the levels for 3 laps instead of seeing it once and spending time in between. They need to change this.

Pattingly

Budda

First. I looove this game.
But I agree. The only thing that bothers me is no 3 lap (classic) GP. And online is weird. You basically play the in between courses 67% of the time and the actual real courses feel like they don't exist really.
Nintendo really needs to implement "classic" modes offline and online.

It must be said that the game has been out for basically one day,

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been out for over a decade.

There were always going to be reactions out of the gate like, "this game sucks, it's no good, 8 is so much better" etc. IMO you should give it more of a shot.

As newbie, I’m enjoying it, quick question, I started on 50cc and it’s obviously very easy.

If I go to 100cc and get 3 stars rating would that also give me a 3 star rating on the 50cc and unlock all the same extras?

@JamesS2612
That’s a good question. I cleared the 50cc stuff separately last night just to check everything out, but maybe the higher tiers also give the credit.

@raymond23
Time trials can also be set to the 3 lap mode, I think. It might even be the default for time trials, actually. But yea, they should make GP available in 3-lap mode. I would wager they will at some point.
