I'm loving Mario Kart World, definitely the best in the series for me (After Mario Kart 64 - I know its old but that game was just awesome.) The free roaming mode has tons of stuff to do and explore, I'm loving the P switch missions and searching around trying to find all the special peach coins that are hidden around the world, it's like a Mario adventure game on wheels lol.
@BenAV
I did some regular online races, and it still had me doing the "intermission" sections before a lap of the actual course.
I think they'll offer the option to just do 3 laps of the course at some point in the future. It's already the default for time trials, so I doubt it would be a difficult thing to implement.
I'm in the vast minority here but what I like most about this game is it seems to have stripped a few things back. As in, they've done away with the special tyres and gliders which makes it feel more 'classic'. What frustrated me about 8 Deluxe was I simply couldn't keep up with all the combinations. This feels achievable.
I totally agree and REALLY like the design of this game from the colours, the personality, the weird characters, the music, the sound effects, it's giving me Mario Kart Double Dash vibes which is my favourite Mario Kart! I felt like DS, 7 and 8 took themselves a little too seriously in some ways.
With that said it needs a lot of quality of life changes:
As mentioned, let us have a classic online where we can play all the laps
Track P mission we've already found on the map and ideally let us replay them too. Not doing this is super annoying and bizarre, given they track the ? panels that appear to do absolutely nothing
The big map in general isn't great and could be a lot more detailed. Let us put markers on places we want to go and drive to them with indication of route.
Sound level sliders... PLEASE! I hate how the karts block out so much of the music. They did the same in Mario Kart 8.
Display the name of the songs (plus game they're from) in the corner when the music changes in Free Roam and/or let us have a sound setting to listen to them. It's possible they're not going to do the former as they'd rather have us listen to them in the Nintendo Music app in future.
I'm really hopeful they'll continue to work on this game on a regular basis. Remember how bare Animal Crossing was when it first launched? You couldn't even swim in it.
@rallydefault That's very disappointing to hear. I like the straight sections for Knockout Tour but if VS races are basically the same thing but shorter then my Switch 2 is just going to be collecting dust pretty soon.
@AlliMeadow Just tried the mode for the first time. First race was a normal race by default and was pretty fun, next three I picked random but not many other people did so we got the crappy intermission races each time. I just quit out of the third one at the start as it's really just not very fun.
I think even in time trial every track has a different route for each of the 3 laps now, which was my least favourite feature of MK8. This definitely isn't the Mario Kart for me lol. Fingers crossed they bring Double Dash to NSO sooner rather than later, but for now it's back to F Zero 99
@BenAV Might be to let the 2 games have the biggest chance of coexisting. If you like the intermission style there’s World but if you prefer the normal 3 lap style there’s MK8 Deluxe.
They don't need to coexist. It's been 11 years, just give us a new proper Mario Kart game.
Nintendo has finally started to give more reason to buy expansion pack so there may suddenly be a lot of people getting access to MK8D booster course for the first time (I'll be one of them). So they may coexist on Switch 2 because of that.
@FishyS I still doubt they decided to deliberately ruin Mario Kart World just so that people will still play 8 Deluxe. They just want to force this new style of race down our throats whether we like it or not. I'm already getting burnt out on Knockout Tour and because there's no proper races my only other option is to just move on and play something else now. It's disappointing because I bought the console specifically to play this game and I probably can't even return it now after redeeming the download code.
I think the game will get a lot of tune ups over time but Mario Kart has always taken decisions that some fans hate. These decisions are often decried as lazy or bad but they typically come from a very purist philosophy from Nintendo.
The “lots of rolling intermissions over 3 lap races” is clearly one of those. Not marking P Switches is another.
I’d expect there to be some form of DLC courses in the future.
Thoughts:
the music is fantastic and draws from a very varied selection of Mario games.
it’s the most Arcady Mario Kart (in a series that was always Arcady). It might also be the hardest.
some locations very strongly evoke specific locations in the real life Disney World. It can’t be a coincidence.
You can fly/ride up a geyser to get to a course. Ok so either I am not creative or the devs went to work high everyday. I would have loved to have been in the storyboarding meetings. Also I love how the Mushroom Queendom feels dangerous to go to work. Who let road rage bo-boms drive? Seriously there seems to a lot of stuff trying to hit you in this game. (Again I have not started racing yet I am just riding around unlocking costumes and karts).

@rallydefault Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I'm overreacting. It's like they've released the game without its main mode and it's almost like a Mario Strikers Battle League level **** up IMO.
@Ryu_Niiyama tbf the Mushroom Kingdom has been repeatedly invaded by hostile foreign forces. In the past 40 years they've barely known a period of peace lasting more than a year or two. Whilst the ruling regime (an absolute monarchy) always restores some kind of semblance of power the leader relies not on the rule of law but instead heavily on her uniformed "enforcers" to literally jump up and down on dissidents. Some who oppose her continued rule are actually burnt to death using "fire flowers".
I'm not sure if it's due to the constant occupations but their economy also seems to be in complete disarray. At some point they've clearly experienced hyper-inflation - coins are literally strewn across the landscape to a degree that evokes Weimar republic era Germany.
In short, after 40 years of total war, the Mushroom Kingdom is essentially a failed state full of random acts of violence. That the roads are especially deadly really shouldn't be any surprise.
@BenAV
That’s not why I’m saying you’re overreacting. I’m saying it because you’re overreacting lol You want to return your brand new system because you didn’t adore the first hour of MK World that you played?
Hrm… You know what, though? You should actually try to go and return your system. There are plenty of people out there who would love to have it.
