Hi,

Has anyone tried Hogwarts Legacy Switch 2 Edition?

Is it just a prettied up version of the Switch 1 or is it now the same version an on the other consoles/PC?

The Switch 1 version had many compromises with the zones and in Hogwarts Castle, with for example all walk bridges being covered with no view.
Is that all gone now with the Switch 2 Edition and it looks and plays more like the original version on other consoles and PC?

If all those compromises are still in place and it's just prettier and with shorter loading times, I am not really interested as I can then just as well play it on the PS Portal (with no compromises) when gaming handheld.

It appears to be the same as the other “big console” versions of the game.

You could actually own and play both versions individually on the Switch 2 if you so desired. It’s not like going from standard Breath of the Wild to Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition; it’s its own separate game and not based on the S1 build.

I'm not a Harry Potter fan myself but was interested in the Digital Foundry technical review and while the dedicated Switch 2 version is much improved it didn't show the transformation of Cyberpunk compared to the PS4. The PS4 version still showed some technical superiority in some areas. Overall I think it was somewhere between PS4 and Xbox Series S in technical merit. Maybe the CPU requirements aren't as demanding so it gives PS4 more room to remain competitive. In the video the original Switch version was described I think as heavily compromised and by far the worst version and probably only worth playing if no other versions are available to you where as the Switch 2 version seemed to be a very decent version worthy of your time.

Cyberpunk 2077 is simply amazing on the Switch 2 and I ran it side by side with my PS5 as test and could barely see the difference. CDPR did an amazing job here.

With Hogwarts Legacy Switch 2 Edition, I just want a confirmed response from someone who owns the Switch 2 edition and has gone through it and can "confirm" it's the full "uncompromised" version now that plays the same as XBox Series S/X, PS5 and PC.
I don't expect the same visuals, but as long as all the heavy compromises from the Switch 1 are gone.

I am just hesitant and skeptical, since the devs themselves are vague and not clear in this in their advertisement and description, nor can I find any clear answers online (yet) either.

And seeing there is so little info out still, It seems I'm not the only one being hesitant and skeptical.

I'm playing Hogwarts Legacy on Switch 2, and it's been amazing so far. Visuals are gorgeous, HDR is implemented very well, and it looks stunning in handheld mode. I've gotten lost in the castle and so far I haven't encountered the bridge areas that you describe, but I'll come back after making a point to explore those areas. What part of the castle are you worried about? I can go there and report back!

7 hours in, and it’s pretty fantastic. There’s one area In Hogwarts that loads, which may not be in the ps5 version (im not sure)? No load screens in hogsmead. Loading screens (fast travel) is pretty quick. Game looks good not as good as other titles mentioned, but it’s definitely an improvement. From everything Ive read, SW2 version performs better than PS4, not quite to series s. I have nothing else to compare it to.

How did you guys set up brightness for this game? In both handheld and TV modes, it just looks so dark, I can barely see character faces. I tried different adjustments and can’t get it right…

WoomyNNYes

@RenanKJ Hogwarts Legacy in-game settings have an image calibration setting to adjust brightness.

Other options, if it's switch 2 relalted, set RGB Range to Limited (this can eliminate overly darkened areas). And obviously, switch 2 may have hdr turned on, which has been a sticking point for calibrating to tvs.

I have a small question regarding the switch 2 version and save data.

I know you can continue a S1 file on the S2 version, but would I be able to go back and forth?

For example, I sometimes want to continue playing the S1 version on my Switch Lite, because it’s way more portable than the S2. Since I don’t have the S2 version of the game, I can easily go back and forth thanks to the cloud save backups.

But since the S2 version is a separate software, I’m not sure if that would be possible.

Also, if I have the 1 version on cartridge, how big is the download for the upgrade?

rallydefault

Eel

@rallydefault I think it’s around 23gb

It’s an entirely different game, so you should then be able to access it even without the S1 cartridge.

Also to answer my own question, it was very difficult to find this online but it seems the answer is no. You can’t continue a S2 save file on the S1, so purchasing the new version means either never playing the game on S1 ever again, or basically playing two different save files.

So I don’t think I’ll be getting the S2 version any time soon myself.

.

It's not technically a Switch 2 upgrade like BotW, it's simply a distinct Switch 2 game which happens to be cheap if you own the Switch 1 version. So you actually end up with 2 different copies of the game and therefore 2 different save files. In theory you could play both versions on Switch 2 if you wanted to for some reason.

@Eel I tested it. The progress I made in the S2 version hogwarts did not show up in the S1 version.

When you first get he switch 2 version, that will import switch 1 hogwarts data, but that's all it does.

Forgive me if I said something weeks ago that implied the save data remains synced between the switch and switch 2 versions of hogwarts - I was mistaken.

My misses managed to get me a second hand copy of this on Switch 1 for £20, I just played 45 minutes of it , and then did the upgrade thing for £8.50... enjoyed what I played so seemed silly not to upgrade

@kerr9000 I've really been enjoying it quite a bit. Right now, I've decided to invest my time into Cyberpunk - but plan to go back to it soon. I think I've put about 10 hours into it (Hogwarts) and I've been pretty impressed.

Ironically I got Cyberpunk on its release day and haven't touched it, been to busy with RUne Factory Guardians, too many games not enough time, but I love trying everything I can 😂

@kerr9000 I hear you! I have decided that I am going to try to stick with one game for a while vs playing lots for short bursts. Been so impressed with everything I’ve played.
