Persona 5...We'll have to wait and see how kind history is to Persona 5
I reckon it's got a good chance of staying a classic forever mainly due to the game oozing style with it's art and music direction which wont age kinda like Zelda Wind Waker plus it's basically a PS3 game and it's still keeping it's own now.
@Ralizah Just to be that guy...I agree on paper that Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a JRPG but it just doesn't feel like a JRPG to me when I actually play it, perhaps that's a testament to how clever the turn based/real time hybrid is.
Fantastic games either way though. There's something about it art style which really makes the game click for me, it's like it's an old timer recounting their time in the war or a page from a history book which works so well with the game.
My top five would be (not allowing myself to repeat franchises):
1. Persona 5 Royal
2. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
3. Final Fantasy VII remake
4. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
5. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Honourable mentions go to Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Valkyria Chronicles. I'd say these are each just as good as my top 5, but I don't really consider either to be a true JRPG (more tactical RPGs).
Edit: oops, seems I already posted a few months back! I guess this can be taken as my updated list, then
1. Persona 5 Royal (specifically the royal content itself.)
2. Xenoblade Chronicles
3. Pokemon White version.
4. Yokai Watch 3
5. Octopath Traveler/Bravely Default II.
Edit: Honestly, thinking back, I don't think I've played that many JRPG's, despite it being one of my favorite game generas.
My list is very dynamic, and I'd struggle to make five in any particular but I may as well try;
5 - Dragon Quest XI. It's pure comfort food RPG, with superb voice acting and some really nice world culture.
4 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It's has a great story, great voice acting, great music, and a believable world.
3 - Final Fantasy VII Remake. It adds to the original and improves upon it so well. The character designs are near flawless and the voice talent shine so bright. The graphics are also on another level.
2 - Persona 5 Royal. Superb gameplay, a decent story (not the best in Persona but still damn good), and some awesome characters and voice acting. Art style's pure bliss too.
1 - Xenoblade Chronicles. The story and thematic emphasis is so powerful and the voice cast is amazing. The Definitive Edition fixed the only problem this game had; poor graphics.
There really is no way to list the top 5 best JRPGs since I like some for various reasons, but the ones I still remember vividly because I played them for hours and hours, had lots of fun and would LOVE to play blindly again are as follows:
5 - Persona 2 (I love the dark tone of the game and you get to battle the Führer, you gotta love it) tied with Persona 3 since I love the "door" moment and everything that built up to it and resulted in it.
4 - Tales of Xilia - one of my first JRPGs and I remember how upset I was at the ending which resulted in me replaying it to get a better one
3 - Final Fantasy IX - Overall a very depressing story but you get invested simply because each character has a valid reason for acting like they do. Vivi best boy.
2 - Mario + Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - My first Mario JRPG and one of my all time favourite. I know a lot of people don't like it since it involves a bit of backtracking but the music and the switching mechanic between Bowser and the brothers is one that I love to no ends.
1 - Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia - The best JRPG I ever played. Sure, some maps a flunky in the beginning, Dread Fighters are broken, but what really shines is the music, the characters, the overall progression in the game, I love that every character has something to say to the final boss and some are sassy, others are upset but some are even sympathetic. Gray is my Bae.
@VoidofLight Yeah I feel the same, but every game I played is a whole new experience you might not forget. JRPGs are mostly really long games so you get invested in them and I feel always particularly sad if I finish them since I don't want that experience to stop - Also, I gotta agree with your Royal comment. I just wish we got Sumire a bit earlier... They kinda marketed her as a new protagonist or at least an early character we get to play with but alas...
1. Xenoblade Chronicles - wouldn't matter which version really, but the Definitive is the best
2. Pokemon Black
3. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
4. Pokemon Sword
5. Ring Fit Adventure
With the exception of Xenoblade Chronicles, this list is definitely subject to change. I bought Ever Oasis and Fantasy Life for the 3DS a few weeks ago, and have Skyrim for the Switch coming through the mail. I also kind of want to return to Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Torna and XCX.
