1. Persona 5 royal
2. The legend of heroes trails of cold steel (series)
3. Fire emblem three houses
4. Tokyo Xanadue eX+
5. Tokyo Mirage sessions
Some side notes: Yakuza series (Not everyone agrees that it's a jrpg but it's definitly worth playing), Xenoblade chronicles I'm going to start playing it on switch soon so that's why it isn't on the list yet. The only final fantasy games I have finished are FF15 (which isn't very good IMO) and FF7R (Good game but I don't think the first part on it's own is good enough to deserve a top 5 spot)
@Heavyarms55 Personal favourite/Top 5/Best, it's all basically the same. It's all opinion at the end of the day. You can say RPG A is longer than RPG B. RPG 1 has better graphics than RPG 2. However none of the things that can be measured, are truly all that important in my opinion. You could take average review score, but if a games great it's going to get a 9 or a 10 usually. So the average scores are going to be much of muchness.
For the purposes of the topic, I'm not too fussed about the definition of JRPG. I would personally class Pokemon, Fire Emblem and Disgaea, Kingdom Hearts as JRPGs. Mass Effect I would class as a WRPG(however I can see where someone could argue the point, because in a lot of ways it feels more like a traditional JRPG, than a traditional WRPG).
@troy258 Yakuza would be in my top 5 if I thought of it as an RPG. The genre that first comes to mind is beatem up, followed very closely by RPG. People should definitely play it if they're an RPG fan though. Kazama Kiryu is low key one of the best characters in video games.
The new Yakuza looks to be a full fat RPG, I'm trying to get through the games as quickly as possible so I can play the new one.
@wargoose I think that's the problem with the rpg genre. It's just so broad that's it difficult to determine what is and what isn't. Yakuza has a beatump feel to it but I also think it could be classified as an action rpg as well. You have a skill tree, sidequests and mainquests. Yakuza like a dragon (the new one) is definitly an Jrpg and I'm going to try to finish yakuza 3-6 this summer so I'm caught up with the serie before the new one comes out.
Just my opinion
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Final Fantasy 7
Xenoblade Chronicles
Etrian Odyssey 4
Valkyria Chronicles
My unconventional pick would be Pro Evolution Soccer 4 on the PS2 since the Master League mode is like a Fire Emblem game. You make your units more and more powerful to the point of being broken with victories you get with them. Spent a lot of time on this game.
@Magician Not only is that a nice list, it’s also a niche list! Never seen anyone pick the original Suikoden over II.
Out of curiosity, what makes Panzer Dragoon Saga really that good? And do you actually own a copy worth hundreds of dollars or did you, ahem, play it by other means?
@troy258 Yeah its a very broad term. I don't want to get too hung up on it. Back in the day an RPG would be defined by it's combat, do your characters stats decide the outcome of a battle or your reflexes. If it's the former it's an RPG, if it's the latter it's an action game. Almost all modern games now use a blend of the two. It's really hard to differentiate between the genres. You end up breaking it down, and you realise what separates an action game from an RPG is how good the dodge button is.
Which when you look at in the that level of detail, you realise how pointless it is to try to distinguish between the two.
1. Fire Emblem (Three Houses/Blazing Blade)
2. Final Fantasy (X-1 or XV. YES, I KNOW, SHUT UP)
3. Persona 5 Royal
4. Tales of Zestiria (Never cried that much because of a game in my entire life)
5. Fairy Fencer F (Silly game, great voice acting and characters)
@Krull - I used to own a copy of PDS, but sold it long ago. One of the few regrettable decisions in my life considering what the game goes for these days. PDS was a terrific swan song for the Saturn. Much like the first Suikoden, it's a very brief rpg, taking less than 15 hours from start to finish.
Personally, I wouldn't pay today's asking price, it simply holds a significant amount of nostalgia for me.
Feel free to put on your favourite pair of rose tinted glasses, and be as completely biased as you like.
In your opinion what are the top 5 JRPGs of all time.
For me Its...
1. Final Fantasy VII(original/remake)
2. Grandia
3. Skies of Arcadia
4. Lost Odyssey
5. Breath of Fire IV
Well Breath of Fire has got the chop from my original list, I've just finished Ys VIII, and what a charming little game it is. I regret only just discovering the series.
I think it would probably be something like:
Final Fantasy VII
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Now playing:
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (PS5)
Fantasy Life i (Switch 2)
Squeakross: Home Squeak Home (Switch 2)
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance (GBA)
After giving it some thought I'm going to list the 5 JRPGs that I think are the most important to the genre, and video games as a whole. So my list may not contain my/your personal favorite JRPs. In no particular order:
Earthbound: my PERSONAL FAVORITE JRPG and my favorite game (heck, it's one of my favorite things in life). Seriously though - while I'm very bias towards it the reason it's on my list is because it inspired the rpg-maker style games. Undertale and Lisa are two great examples. You can draw the conclusion that without Earthbound, that genre of RPG may not exist the way we know it today.
Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy (the NES originals): These are the conventional grandparents of the video game genre as we know it. I included both in the same spot because I think they represent a stronger cultural statement as a pair. They wrote the rule book and with two games they cemented the genre, and were able to gain popularity outside of Japan. Earthbound may have influenced a modern RPG trend, but Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are the genesis of JRPGs.
Final Fantasy VII: There's a reason Square picked this game to be remade. It may be the most popular JRPG ever. I don't have much to say regarding the matter, but I think that this game may have created more fans of JRPGs than any other. It made the genre more popular at the best possible time. Which leads me to my last pick -
Persona 5: I can't think of a modern JRPG that represents the growth of the genre better than Persona 5. It was well made and very popular too. We'll have to wait and see how kind history is to Persona 5, but we're at a time when the demand for this game (and the series) is higher than the supply (meaning availability on Switch, ports of older games, yaddayaddayadda).
