@FishyS Your gonna die in this game, a lot, but you gotta push through, it’s ok to take breaks as well, if people gave up, it was just too much for them, it’s tough, but so worth it in my opinion when you beat them!

Punishing games which make many people want to give up is a totally fine game genre. Bit since it by definition is not a game for everyone (or even most people) kind of seems to me an odd choice for game of the year. No games are 100% universal, but I feel like the truly best are more so.
@FishyS Well it had a good art direction, fun gameplay, great voice acting, amazing story, even tho you have to look deeper to find it.
It was just Ana amazing game, wile not for everyone, was a great game nonetheless, tbh honest every game there wasn’t for everyone, with some person not wanting to play it for one reason or the other, excluding stray, god of war might be to mature for some people, do violent, whatever it is, might not make them want to play it, jrpgs might be to hard for others, so some people won’t play xenoblade.
I haven’t played stray yet, wile I’m sure it’s an amazing game, didn’t stand a chance with god of war and elden ring. Heck it didn’t even have a chance with xenoblade being there.
@Snatcher@EaglyTheKawaiiShika A ton of people bought Elden Ring, but according to steam only around 10% even partially won the game (bad ending) and a ton didn't get too far at all. So that makes 'fun gameplay' arguable. I only point this out because I believe it was one of the best selling games of the year, but I would guess (no stats unfortunately) a lot more people actually kept playing for example Arceus (which I give as an example just because it was also one of the year's top selling).
There are a lot of criteria of a good game, and Elden Ring had some of them, but definitely not all. Not arguing it shouldn't have won awards, I just think overall goodness doesn't live up to hype level. tbh, I don't actually have a good candidate for game of the year, but the fact that games like Elden Ring seem to win a lot (both sekiro by the same developer and tons of grandiose open-world-ish type games) amongst the many 100s of games per year makes me think the process is generally just a bit biased. Even though neither it takes two or last of us part 2 were games I played, I was happy to see some diversity for a couple years.
Again, not against Elden Ring, just found it a predictably unexciting choice (the choice was predictable and unexciting not the game) which blocked some other interesting games in some of the categories.
@FishyS “the choice was predictable and unexciting not the game“
But last of us wasn’t? It was literally the one game everyone was talking about, Also to boot it won almost every award there that year.
I love elden ring, and I didn’t even get to the final area, so you can definitely like the game without even beating it, plus you have to do specific things for you endings, bad is pretty common, I was going for another ending myself however.
And the reason why fromsoftwere games tend to win big awards like that is because, there good, there great games and sekiero even made an orginal character, which was different from a soul born.
And of course a lot of people kept playing legends, it was surprisingly difficult but didn’t no where near require the level of commitment that elden ring does.
Tho I agree because of its nature it has less players, but I don’t think players should matter if the game was actually good, which it was, yes I think it did things wrong, specifically how they decided to re use bosses, other then that it’s a really enjoyable game if you take the time to learn it or it doesn’t make you too angry.

@Snatcher last of us was predictable that year but my point is most of the games which win game of the year are big grandiose games. Of the dozens of game genres out there, it was nice to see a totally different category for a couple years.
No but I get what @FishyS is saying, "art" doesn't make a game, and a crazy amount of people (literally no one I know personally that bought the game) didn't finish it.
We're currently in a stupid mindset that "gritty + hyper-realistic graphics = best game" and I'm not saying Elden Ring is bad at all. It looked really really fun, and tbh I kind of expected the win and wasn't mad about it (I was for Last Of Us II)
One of the reasons I'm such a Nintendo fan-boy is that they bring variety to an age of games that all look a bit too similar, and their games appeal to all audiences. Not just the difficulty-craving souls players or the gore and horror loving "cool" people.
I think GoWR, ER, or XC3 deserved the win here and I would've been cool with any of the three. GotY is a silly concept just meant for fun because everyone is gonna have different gaming tastes. I just wanted to say that I see where Fishy's coming from.
Games I'm playing right now:
OoT N64
DK64 N64
Lego LotR Wii
Spirit Tracks DS
TotK Switch
@FishyS I get what your saying, tho I personally can’t really agree that Last of us was different, considering it hit every point that made a goty game, I mean, it won’t almost every award, despite being a really decisive game that year.
But again, I agree where your coming from.

@Snatcher Maybe Last of Us was a bad example because I may have forgotten what it is. 😝 Usually I at least watch streams of the game of the year, but that one I barely noticed somehow. I'll stick with it takes 2 as a good example of the point I was attempting to make.
Edit: It was 2020! Everything in 2020 was a black hole of memory except animal crossing.
Edit Edit: It would have been hilarious and awesome if animal crossing had won game of the year in 2020.
@FishyS Now it takes two was really a pallet cleanser I will agree with you, with the games it was up against it was nice to see it win, it was really underrated.
