Topic: The Chit-Chat Thread

Today has not been that productive at all. I slept in till 830 this morning, then wound up napping 12-3. It’s been dark and rainy all day, now it’s nice and breezy. Tomorrow I’ve gotta take care of two yards, hit the dump, make meals, and do laundry. I feel like I’ve failed 50% of my weekend. Blegh.

Just curious. Do you usually do a splash of citrus in your Rum & Coke or are you more a purist? I find both lime and lemon to be good complements.

Also forget the coke sometimes, but I usually whip up a daiquiri if I have the lemon (love sour stuff).

Another favorite cocktail is a Tom Collins but now that it is fall, I splurge on ginger beer and do a Dark & Stormy.

@ThanosReXXX - As much as I’d like to think it was boiled internal juices squealing out between the soft parts of the lobster carapce, I know from experience it was those lobsters screaming in pain. Just like you or I would do in an unimaginable humid heat death.

I don't have a gaming backlog anymore, guys.
I just play whatever I feel like at the moment now. I don't even feel concerned about beating the games anymore hahah.
It feels better this way to me. It felt to me at some point I was just wanting to beat the games to clear my backlog and the fun took a backseat.

Okay, random question for you guys. Do you nickname your Pokémon (or if you don't play Pokémon, do you change default names of characters), if so what do you go for? Do you have a system?

@Vinny Hey, congratulations! I'm actively working on mine these days so I hope to get there as well someday. Albeit with beating them unless something's genuinely too hard; for me going by backlog and system actually provides a motivation I usually struggle to find. Anyway, nice to hear this and good work!

@Tyranexx Yeah, same here. I didn't have any trouble with sensory input when I was younger but it kicked off when I was a teenager. Ear plugs don't really work for me as they irritate my skin sooner or later which in turn makes it easy to develop inflammations. Doesn't help that they merely muffle sound which means... bass. Fun fact, what I can tune out is songs which are generally considered annoying because it's a constant noise, no conversation, with very little dynamic (fluctuation in volume). Working while letting a ten hour loop of Nyan Cat run? Sure, I've done this. Working while someone's talking? Nope.

My favourite experience for the latter is when I worked with sound. Very small office, one single, open room, you have to pay close attention whether your sound's clean... and my boss would have very loud and long conversations with our voice actors in the middle of the office instead of either his room or outside. Loud enough that I could hardly hear anything when I cranked up the volume and couldn't tell whether there's any audible clicks or other disturbances in the recording. I'd always have to put down work and wait for him to finish his chats.

In games where I create a character, it's a girl & she's Lucille, @KarateLuigi .... Where I have to play as a guy, it's Bruce With parties, I do have a system for quite a few names for guys & girls before I have to just pick at random

I like to give funny Pokemon's nickname with my native language Indonesia.
For example, I gave Torchic nickname with Ayam Api because it was Ayam in Indonesia or Chicken in English and because its elemental = Fire, i gave Api / Fire in English.

Some funny names for my Pokemons:
Bulbasaur = Bungasaurus
Tropius = Pisang
Squirtle = Kura Air
Oddish = Bunga Bau
Croakie = Qodoc aka Kodok in Indonesia

Everyone gets named Shepard; You’ll never be better than Commander Shepard.

@NintendoByNature - Oh man, I love Slither so much, and The Faculty is good too. I’ve failed at watching movies the last two nights. I fell asleep to Eli and Midsommar even though both were good. Midsommar was actually shaping up to be great, but we started it late, and I just couldn’t stay awake.

@KarateLuigi - I love creating and/or naming characters, but I can only choose a name if I know the characters don’t have existing names. In older LOZ games, I always chose Link. Same with something like Earthbound, when I know all those characters have actual names; I can’t name them something different. I don’t have go to names when I do get the opportunity though. I usually come up with something I deem appropriate to the in game lore/universe.

@Anti-Matter - So, in your language, you have a name for the sound a sheep makes, and that name is Mbeek, or Indonesian sheep make noises in their own language, and that noise is “mmmbeeeeek”?

@NintendoByNature - We rented it from iTunes. It’s too new to be on streaming, and the DVD is a long wait from Netflix. We still get two discs through the mail, haha! I think it was $4.99 for a 24 hour rental on iTunes, so I have a chance to finish it today, but it’s football Sunday, so the chances are slim.

@KarateLuigi I have earplugs, but they don't do me much good either. As you mentioned, they only muffle sound. Plus, plugging my ears that long causes my ears to hurt after a good while, which in turn leads to a headache.

I can easily tune out to nonverbal songs and even a few with lyrics. It really depends on what I'm listening to. Lately I've been running Xenoblade Chronicles tracks on YT while at work.

The situation with the previous boss does seem pretty annoying. Did you ever talk to him about it? I work in an open office area as well. Sometimes our support guys get a bit loud when they're all on the phones at once, but I can't fault them for it as they're just doing their job. I'd love my own office. I typically cope by cranking my music up a bit. I'm in software development, so I need the concentration depending on what I'm doing lol.

@bimmy-lee ah that stinks. I'll just have to wait I suppose. After a measesly 1-3 start for fantasy this year, I'm back to 4-3. Really need another big win this week. I've been on a roll lately. With thielen out, I'm forced to play dede Westbrook, Or tyrell Williams. Leaning towards Williams though.

@Anti-Matter - That’s an interesting list! The words in your language also sound like the noises made by the animals. I love onomatopoeia.

@NintendoByNature - Three in a row, nice work! Both those guys are questionable, but expected to play. I agree, I like Williams slightly more, but they both have nice matchups. I just watched TY, Pascal, and Ebron shred shred HOU though, and their secondary is in flux. They’ve been giving up yards and scores all season. Hard to believe we’re at the halfway mark.

@bimmy-lee yea I'm not crazy about either, but in the games Williams has played he has a tud in each. So the odds say play him. Yea Indy has been lightin it up lately. I've always been a TY guy too.

Been thinking about getting a GameCube HDMI adapter. I have a lot of GC games and I like playing on my big-screen TV, not to mention the picture quality looks great from the YouTube videos I watched on it. Plus I still have my Game Boy Player, so that's all good!

Fun to see your naming conventions [munches popcorn]. As for my own, my default name for player characters is Chris, regardless of gender. I always name my Pokémon - save for legendaries - and give them a name which starts with the same letter as their species while trying to go for something which I feel suits them. For example Piplup -> Perry. Which means that when I did my Eeveelution run everyone had a name which starts with E. Outside of Pokémon I stick to default names for party members save for said player character because I don't think I could come up with anything better.

@Tyranexx Honestly I hardly listen to anything but video game soundtracks anymore. They're delightfully unobtrusive as they're tailored around not interfering with your concentration.

As for my boss, I once mentioned it to our manager who was in charge of productions. Of course there isn't much he can do but he did tell me there are plans to move to a new office and make sure people can do their audio magic in peace so that's something. That aside, I merely did it as a hobby-like side work during university so it didn't impact my life at least.

Yeah, I can work better when listening to music as well plus it allows you to drown out sound. It's one of the things which bothers me about working with sound to be honest - as much as I love this field having no way to relax your mind all day long gets taxing after a while. My overly sensitive hearing doesn't help either though it does make me the audio equivalent of a coal mine canary.
