I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird right now. Really enjoying it. I'll admit I get a bit bored during some parts after reading for a long time but overall I"m really enjoying it. I'm not done yet but close. I think I'm on chapter 17.

A great classic. Afterwards, check out the film (if you haven't already), starring the awesome Gregory Peck.

I started The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway almost a couple months ago, but I haven't finished it yet.

@SB Yeah, we read that in Literacy class earlier this year. A good read.

Really? It's barely over 100 pages. And it's Hemingway; not exactly complicated verbiage going on with him,

Speaking of great writers who have a deceptively "simplistic" style, has anyone read any Charles Bukowski? I was huge into his stuff back in college, and own most of his books and collections, including copies of the two illustrated short stories he did with R.Crumb.

I recently read two titles mentioned already. The latest Castle book, Naked Heat, was a nice mental break after reading The Book of the New Sun.

Not much to say about Castle, as I read it more as a time waster, but New Sun was amazing, right up there with Dune at the top of the sci-fi class. Severian has to be my favorite narrator I've had the pleasure of reading, and Agia has to be one of the most interesting villains. I'm reading Long Sun now, which is almost as good, though it started off very slow, and I miss the first-person perspective. I love Oreb.

Also read Fifth Head of Cerberus by Gene Wolfe, and my brain is still a bit dizzy. I received Let the Great World Spin (or something of the sort) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for Christmas. Hoping they're good, though I know nothing about either.

Finally someone who has read these books! I am close to finally finishing Book of the Long Sun myself. I haven't been reading much in the past year or so. It is slow, but I find the characters and themes to be an interesting exploration. I haven't been able to figure out where it fits in, but it seems that Horn is in Book of the Short Sun. Or a character name Horn according to the inside flap.
The Wizard Knight series is really a lot of fun. It is a fair bit easier read compared to some of his other books, but there seems to be something else to it. My theory of course, and there were only maybe two or three parts that reference to it. This one is less Christian based than some of his others.

Oreb was awesome from the start. Well, after he was almost sacrificed anyway.

Oh yes, it is a very interesting book. I'm glad I stuck with it. I especially like those mini-Sherlock Holmes moments Silk and Severian have where they just lay down the truth like it's nobody's business, and I never ever see it coming.

It's odd that he mentions Horn and Feather a good bit, but they don't really appear much, at least so far. I've heard he's the narrator of Short Sun, so I'm looking forward to that. I hear a lot of people say the first book of Short Sun is his best. If it can top anything from New Sun, I will be astounded.

I'm actually not much of a fantasy fan, but it's got your recommendation and Gene Wolfe's name on it, so I'll probably give Wizard Knight a shot eventually.

I've got his Latro in the Mist series to read after. Have you read / heard of those? For anyone reading who hasn't, behold the most amazing concept for a book ever conceived: A Roman soldier loses his memory every morning due to a head injury, so he has to write down in his diary the day's events in each chapter, though sometimes he misses days and so do we. On top of this, he has developed the ability to see and speak to gods, ghosts, and creatures of myth and has no idea this is unusual.

Is it bad that I absolutely hated The Odyssey? I understand that it's a "classic" (whatever that means) and all but just.... ugh. I had to read it for school by the way. We're reading Lord of the Flies now, which is better but still boring at times. I can never get myself to read more than one book at once, so that's about as much as I've read lately.

@horselover88 The Books of Bayern are great. I didn't like the fourth, Forest Born, as much, but it was okay.

Anyone mentioned Ender's Game? It's amazing. It's sci-fi from the seventies, so some of their tech is dated, but it's still one of the best books I've read.

I've read Ender's Game too many times to count. Basically laser tag in zero g. Can't go wrong there. What tech is dated?

I find it funny that they are still trying to put together an Ender's Game film script after all these years. At a certain point you have to admit something isn't working.

Pendragon, anyone?
A pretty fantastic series, I'd say.

In terms of more "serious" books, I really liked Sophie's World, as well as both the Iliad and the Oddysey.

I'm working on a game that's coming out soon!
