It's not absurd to hold the creator of a genre, to one that simply repeats it's core mechanics every year. No doubt Black Ops is more mainstream and popular, but it's done nothing to better the genre, or the industry, where Wolfenstein 3D took gaming to a level it never knew before. Feel free to bring up Maze Wars if you want, but it was more of a tech demo than an actual game. Also, considering gameplay is what defines a game, if one game has better gameplay, than it's a better game.
How is Wolfenstein 3d's gameplay better than Black Ops? Also, with that kind of logic we could almost say that Pong is the best game ever made.

The better gameplay comment was to you admitting Melee had better gameplay then Brawl. Also, Pong is better than alot of other games simply because of the advancements in video gaming that it accomplished, while most titles are just rehashed mechanics from more influential games. Example: Back in the day, you had nothing to compare Wolfenstein 3D to because everything about it was unique and groundbreaking. Call of Duty in general is always compared to every other FPS out there nowadays (Minus what VALVe works on, mind you)

There is no truly "Better" game. There's technically well-made games, and there's innovative games (along with the inverse of either, of course), but when everyone has different tastes, what game is "better" is all up to the individual.
With that said, personally I can't say there's ever been a better Party Fighter than Smash Bros. Who cares if it does the same thing every game? If you ask me, it still does it all better than its competitors.
^To be frank, i don't even like rehashes, like CoD or other unimaginative games like that. Still, the undeniable fact is that i sat through the whole of Modern Warfare's single player campaign, but Wolfenstein 3D or Pong are games that i may try for 3 minutes and then quit bored. For me, a good game isn't necessarily something that has innovated or created a genre, but one that perfects it. Still, i play Nintendo mainly because they can both innovate and perfect their creations.
I'll just say this. The games that are only well-made are forgotten in time (See Gex, Blasto, Blast Corps), while the titles that define innovation are always held in high regard, and stand the test of time (Wolfenstein, Super Mario Bros. Donkey Kong, DOOM, Mega Man 2, Metal Gear Solid, Chrono Trigger). While there's always exception, this is the general rule. If that doesn't help iron out how some games are better than others, then you'll never understand it.
^That is true and you chose quite a heavy hitters to your list, but being remembered and being good isn't always the same thing (I'm pointing at you, Halo).

Hahaha, like I said, there's always exceptions.

Just because they're well-remembered does not mean they're necessarily "better". There will always be those who prefer Splinter Cell over Metal Gear Solid, Jumpman over Donkey Kong, and Halo over Doom.
Preference doesn't matter when you're talking about the quality of the products. Since opinions vary by such a big degree, the only concrete evidence for what is good and not good about a video game is what that game does to not only provide entertainment, but how it betters the industry. Example: I really love the Serious Sam games, but there's no doubt it's done nothing to help the industry evolve, grow, or become better. DOOM has, and it's influence is undeniable, and still is seen in todays games 18 years later.

Anyway, I thought I'd get a nice SSB64 combo video up here. It's a video of Isai, and if anyone knows anything about the tournament scene in 64, they must know about Isai. He's godly.

What a coickedink that this thread would come up. A couple days ago I saw a poster in my apartment complex that's advertising an upcoming Super Smash Bros. tournament. Not Brawl, but the original! My reaction was somewhere along the lines of "I didn't think people still had tournaments for the original Super Smash Bros. game..."
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
I actually went to a tournament for Brawl last year. I got up to Round 2 though That Toon Link (me) vs. Snake (him) match lasted a good 15 minutes though, hahaha.
Do you have to bring your own controller to these tournaments? If it was a Brawl tournament, and if Wiimotes were provided and/or could be shared I would attend it, because I consider myself a competent player. But since it's the original N64 Smash Bros., even if controllers were provided, I wouldn't attend because I haven't played the original in years.
I heard that you can't bring Gamecube controllers to Brawl tournaments. That would make me rage hardcore if I got kicked out of a tournament just because I didn't want to use a Wiimote/CCPro. D:

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...

That's a lie. My work throws a monthly Super Smash Bros. tournament (Alternating between all three game), and you're free to bring your own controller. (We test it before-hand to make sure it's not modded.)
