So uhh....Netflix just put up Nimona for free on Youtube.

Not a trailer or anything like that, nonono: the ENTIRE movie.

Nimona was easily one of my personal favourite films of last year so I'd highly recommend you watch it while you have the chance to do so; you literally have no excuse now XD

@Fizza I'm assuming they are trying to drum up hype for the Oscar voting which is going on at the moment by releasing it for free. Seems silly to me as it's never getting in between Spider Man or Studio Ghibli and the Oscar gold.

I watched it with my niece, I think I liked it more than she did.I really liked the retro and Neo-clean art style of it.

Went to see the Beekeeper at the theatre over the weekend.

Sweet old lady commits suicide after being scammed out of her life savings by an internet hacking group, Jason Statham plays her quiet "keeps to himself" beekeeping neighbor who is really a retired secret agent/assassin who proceeds to seek out & violently murder the group behind the hack, and then proceeds to work his way up the organization to the elites who profited from the scam (who of course hire all sorts of muscle to try & take him down). Really fun, at times brutal, stuff.

Other films I watched over the weekend:

the Cheerleaders (Tubi) - Raunchy comedy from the early 70's that focuses on a group of high school cheerleaders going about their lives. It had a couple of slightly amusing moments, but overall it was very light on the comedy & very heavy on the raunch (like a big middle finger to the Hay's Code, it seemed like whatever little narrative it had was just in service to get to the next vignett involving nudity, of which was nearly constant).

the Other Guys (Blu-Ray) - Thrifting pick up. Will Ferrell & Mark Whalburg Star as the zeroes to heroes in this wacky buddy cop comedy. Had me cracking up on numerous occasions, however I felt it ran on a bit too long for what it was (though that was partially down to me watching the extended "unrated" cut, which didn't seem to add all that much "unrated" content. No nudity or gore, for example).

Road House (Blu-Ray) - Thrifting pick up. Patrick Swayze plays the most elite bouncer in the country who's hired to turn around a failing Midwestern bar, runs afoul of the local mob boss (who has the authorities in his pocket), and proceeds to clean up the entire town with his fists. Super 80's, and super fun.

Sushi Girl (Blu-Ray) Thrifting blind buy. After a con gets out of prison, his partners in crime throw him a welcome back "party" (that he can't refuse) with an expensive exotic sushi meal (refer to the title), and the group bickers & turns against each other as they try to figure out what happened to the misplaced diamonds they stole on their last job together (with the titular "Sushi Girl" having to keep her composure as the group starts torturing each other, in very brutal fashion). A little different than what I usually watch, but worth the buy (has a huge twist that absolutely won't hit the same on future watches though).

the Wolfman (Blu-Ray) - Thrifting pick up. Made somewhat recently (has Benecio Del Toro in it), it's an 1890's England set werewolf tale. This one was a blind buy as well, but I ended up liking it well enough (some absolutely brutal kills). Watched the uncut extended edition.

@RR529 the other guys is my guilty pleasure movie. It's not nearly as good as other comedies. But I just love everything about that movie. They play off eachother really well. No matter what if it's on I watch it, and it annoys my wife to no end 🀣

Tom & Jerry on Netflix tonight, the 2021 movie. Alright movie for a nice Friday evening. Not something I'd go to a theater to see, but still had some fun moments nonetheless. Though, I did get a kick out of the Droopy cameo.

The resident Trolls superfan! Saw Trolls Band Together via early access and absolutely loved it!

Watched Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny. The first half was kind of average for an Indiana Jones flick(not a bad thing), but the twist in the second half is pretty darn cool. It was a decent watch.

After watching its predecessor last week, I just finished watching The Dark Knight Rises for the first time.

Can you love a movie if you only love half of it? It's not necessarily a question I ever thought I'd have to ask myself honestly. Like duh: you either like a movie or you don't, simple as, right? Well....The Dark Knight Rises blurs that line in a very interesting way.

If you saw my ramblings in here about The Dark Knight about a week ago, you'll probably be well aware that the original TDK has easily become one of my favourite films ever created, standing toe-to-toe alongside longtime stalwarts like Hot Fuzz, The LEGO Movie and The Shawshank Redemption. It's this perfect amalgamation of everything that makes me love Batman as a franchise that also throws in a heaping of its own creativity constantly throughout its runtime, making it stand not only as a fantastic Batman film, but as a fantastic film in general. The Dark Knight Rises by comparison is....weird.

The first half of this movie was tough to sit through to put it mildly: very little happens despite the HEAVY timeskip at play, it feels like there are WAY too many characters to keep track of and the editing (specifically with the way borders work) is some of the most distracting I think I've ever seen. The first half of The Dark Knight Rises? A 6 without question, maybe even a 5.

And then you keep watching.

And the further you dive into TDKR, the more and more you start to become engrossed in the plot and the world and the characters and their internal struggles and every little thing set up from both the previous film and the first half of this movie suddenly starts to dramatically fall into place in the most gripping way imaginable.

This is in no small part thanks to the film's biggest star: Bane. I vividly remember being very skeptical of TDKR's rendition of Bane upon seeing him for the first time prior to watching the film since....well he's not exactly Bane to put it mildly. What was once a pure bruiser capable of inflicting everlasting physical and mental wounds (with a surprising soft side once you got to know him) has been turned into a gritty terrorist full of radical ideas and a shockingly high intellect. And, for as much as I love regular Bane (he's easily one of my favourite members of Batman's rogues gallery), I gotta admit: they did a pretty great job with him here. It really is Tom Hardy's performance that does it man: he's able to sell such a raw level of intimidation and physicality that makes his moments of introspection hit so much harder when they do crop up. It's not really the Bane I wanted....but it's definitely the Bane I needed.

Overall, TDKR is definitely not as good as the previous outing, not by a country mile. But what it does well it does absolutely extraordinarily well and, despite my thoughts on its first half, will probably rattle around in my mind just as much as TDK has for the past week already. 8/10

I recently saw The Iron Claw from A24. What a heartbreaking movie. That final scene with Kevin made me tear up. I didn't expect that from Zac Efron. When I saw him in Baywatch and High School Musical., I thought he would be a forgotten who relied on his looks too much. He proved me wrong here.

Everything else was excellent. It is so authentic: the show, the ring, the matches, and the interviews, except for Ric Flair. He was fine. But his "wooo!" didn't hit like I expected. It isn't easy to replicate the charisma of old legends, so I can't fault him for it.

I'd recommend this to anyone, even to non wrestling fans. 9/10

The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

Watched a few Best Picture nominees to see what the state of play is like at the moment… if not for Oppenheimer it would be a very difficult conversation, instead it’s a close race for second. Especially loved The Holdovers, it was shot to look like a seventies film and despite it coming out like 3 months ago it felt like a warm blanket. Nostalgic, funny, poignant and honest.

I watched "The Adventures of Tintin" on Discord last night. Pretty good movie based on a comic I've never even read. There's been talks of a sequel but it's been like 13 years.

Cowboy Bebop the Movie (Blu-Ray) - I know Adult Swim aired this at least once back in the day, but I didn't remember much about it so it was nice to give it a go. Feels a lot more (environmentally) grounded than the TV show. Every once in a while there's a reminder that this is a sci-fi franchise (like an excellent dogfight involving Spike's Swordfish in the climax) & not even on Earth, but the Martian settlement they're in is such a convincing facsimile of contemporary (90's) New York that it really helps set the tone (the show has some of this, but it really goes above & beyond here). As for the story itself, I don't think it quite hits the highs of the series, but it's still worthwhile to go on another adventure with the gang & it has some amazing action set pieces.

Minions (Blu-Ray) - Picked this up thrifting. Pretty low brow (even by family friendly standards), but I'd be lying if I said I don't get a kick out of their antics from time to time.

Just finished re-watching Better Call Saul, so I've been in the mood for some courtroom dramas. Picked up A Few Good Men (1992), on vhs at a thrift store. Hadn't seen it in years. Jack Nicholson absolutely steals the show as Colonel Nathan Jessep. He really has mastered the art of playing a complete *****.

I finally got around to watching Puss in Boots: the Last Wish which was really good. For me, it was carried by the incredible number of fairy tale references, but the plot was pretty solid. The animation was mostly good, but there were a few scenes (especially the fight with the sleeping giant) that just didn;t work for me in that sense.

Decided to fully lean into the strangeness of February 29th as a day and watch one of the most bizarre movies of all time for the first time ever to mark the occasion: Donnie Darko.
Untitled
I'm not gonna say much on it here as this is a quintessential of one of those 'you gotta watch it for yourself and come to your own conclusions' kind of films but I will say this: I have absolutely no f***ing idea what was going on for 99% of this thing's runtime....and I loved every second of it.

@Fizza I always felt Donnie Darko is less of a movie and more like a rites of passage for teens who started getting curious in movies beyond just seeing entertaining blockbusters. Like the cool imagery such as a spooky bunny skull, confident storytelling, lots of ideas for you try to process etc even if it's an incoherent mess.
