I see what you're saying, but the actual OS is pretty sweet. You can play around with it for hours, although yes, the apps are worse than the Mac/Windows counterparts. The OS may be a bit better than Windows 7, but OS X Lion is way ahead of the group.
I have never gotten the job done with OpenOffice or Gimp.
just last month I lost access from Microsoft Office, although I'm registered. So instead of wasting more money I spent 8 years ago, I now use OpenOffice, and it works fine. just save the files as a .doc and not .odt, and it works great! I still have to try Gimp though.

Macintosh, of course! I use Mac OS X Snow Leopard and it's still pretty awesome. (not too different from Lion) Much better than Windows 7, in my opinion. (can't say for Windows 8 though, because I have yet to try it) Everything always seems to run really smoothly, even when I'm using multiple applications with multiple files open. Sometimes Photoshop and Safari stuff things up when I have way too many tabs open, but that doesn't generally happen. The only small disappointment is that I don't have the option of using Paint Tool SAI for coloring, but it's not that big of a deal. (I can do that and pretty much anything else with Photoshop anyway)
I love my Snow Leopard. <3

I'm a fan of Linux, (Arch Linux flavor) and I'm never giving up my workspaces. Or my desktop environment. When I get bored of it I can just change it. Honestly, they all have their own strengths:
Windows: compatibility, though WINE somewhat tackles this. (hardly perfect, though) Linux: ultimate customizibility and great for developing software Mac: ease of use and sleekness, though it is not as though the other OSes haven't been making strides like that either

Your description and implying of bitterness towards Linux and popular open source software is funny in a good way. I had the feeling that my software picks would be criticized.
