Not a recommendation, but I don't intend to upgrade from Windows XP until I absolutely have to (ie can't use the internet anymore). Everything still seems to work with it, even with Windows 8 on the way, so I just don't see the point in upgrading. I tried Vista and Windows 7, and they didn't seem any better. Heck, they were worse in some respects. I won't judge Windows 8 until I get a chance to try it, but I haven't seen anything yet that makes me want to rush out to get it.

Still, If I had to choose between the two, it'd be an easy choice of Windows 8. I've never liked Mac, and it's incompatible with certain programs that I need.

I've had a long history w/ Windows...mostly bad memories. 7 was the first Windows I didn't recall saying "COMPUTER!!!!!!" over 1/3 of the time. 8 might be okay. We'll see. Macs are extremely expensive, it's the only reason I haven't ever switched.

I've been looking online, and it seems like it's shaping up to be Windows 8, Mac OS X Lion, and Linux Umbutu. Linux is actually stepping their game up this generation, and almost compares to Windows 7. What do you guys think about it?

I've never seen Linux. How's it like? Any major web browsers? iTunes? Probably not. But still, does anyone know?

Ubuntu definitely. Or Solaris.

Edit: Is Umbutu a real thing or is it just a mispelling?

How's 7 worse than XP? XP was slower than a snail to me. 5 minute bootups, 15 minute freeze-ups, and no search box. Now Vista was much worse than XP; double that bootup time, shave the freeze-up time in half, add a search box, but w/ glitches galore and compatibility issues for icing on the terrible cake, and you've got Vista. At least it looked nicer than XP. 7 has less compatibility issues, less glitches, and it's lightning fast. It rarely freezes up, but its pretty vulnerable to viruses. Even w/ Norton, my computer got taken over by a hacker. He streamed crappy heavy metal music full-blast at 12:30 am. A few days earlier, I checked what the Windows security updates were, and it was supposed to protect me from just that: a hacker taking over your computer. I didn't check any weird sites either. That's my only problem: it always takes several updates to finally fix any issues. Recently, I had to download updates for what happened to my computer, to prevent it from getting taken over by a hacker. Not like XP was virus-proof either. The computer caught several viruses before they did any damage. One actually did. Apple's only Windows 7 argument, there's tons of viruses, is a good one. It probably would cost more to get one mac though. My computer's working okay now, and Microsoft would have to be crazy to have 8 so virus-prone. So probably 8.

Yeah, chrome has google music. I use that for music storage and google docs for word documents/ppts/spreadsheets. The only problem is when you lose internet access...

For now, I prefer Windows 7 for compatibility purposes, okay reliability, and PC gaming. But I still like Mac OS X Lion for it's intuitive and very reliable software (although they could do better in providing a good ergonomic mice for desktops). I want to test out Ubuntu and Windows 8.

My computer is fast enough. Speed more has to do with the programs you installed than the thing itself, as far as I know. I just found it very difficult to use. Also, my computer rarely freezes unless I have too many programs going all at once, and I've never had compatibility issues. The layout and everything was just plain confusing on Windows 7 - nothing was where I thought it should be. I used it for a week, and by the end of the week, I still didn't know where everything was. XP wasn't as hard to figure out for me, even though I was less computer savy when I got my computer.
