Topic: Looking for a new TV... [solved - bought LG C9 55"]

@Joeynator3000 I really don't have a good camera or smartphone to do it myself, all I can say is that the picture quality of LG C9 is incredible. In the daytime it's better if you close the curtains or blinds.

So yeah, had major computer issues but that was sorted finally. Anyways been kinda busy today, but I did try out Smash Ultimate on the TV, didn't mess with the settings too much but it looks great.

Only downside to this TV....Switch's surround sound doesn't play well with HDMI-ARC, so I have to stick with the HDMI splitter thing. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but yeah it simply doesn't work for me with ARC.

If you're willing to look through a more technical review I'd STRONGLY suggest heading over to rtings before you buy. You really need to go to more technical review sites for this kind of thing. The in-store demos are misleading and because of the price of the purchase people are going to defend what they got:
https://www.rtings.com/

With that said..... I got a Sony X900F about a year ago and couldn't be happier with it. I was swayed towards it at the time mostly because for the price compared to equivalent Samsung/LG models. There are probably only three things I'd point out about it that kinda such. Firstly only two of the ports are full HDMI 2.0 and one of those is also the ARC port which means I only really have one port for "full" 4K. The newer revision has all four on 2.0. Also there's no Freesync. But it does have full array local dimming which was great for the price but I do occasionally notice the zones, OLED would definitely be better.

but even for those 3 complaints...

  • Not many 2.0 ports: this was all sets in this price bracket at the time
  • Freesync: The models that had this at this price were edge lit and lacked local dimming
  • OLED: I paid ~$1800AU, the cheapest OLED was $2600 at the time

This is more of the Switch than your TV. The Switch outputs surround sound as uncompressed PCM. HDMI ARC does not support this neither does the newer revision on 2.1 eARC. The only way to get surround sound from the Switch is by plugging it directly into a receiver or a soundbar that does HDMI pass through. If the Switch (and for that matter Wii U) output Dolby 5.1 like the PS4, XBOne, PS3, 360, XBox and PS2 this wouldn't be an issue.

Well I said downside to the TV, but...you get what I mean...ARC and Switch surround don't like each other. xD

As for TruMotion, it's not perfect, but yeah people need to get over it. lol I do notice the "artifacts" and stuff people mention, though. I'll mess with it later but I'll turn it off for now. (watching Detective Pikachu finally. lol)

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I didn't mess around too much with the settings, and by default the Switch looks quite good on this TV. Tried out Smash Ultimate for a bit, and yeah...I love it. lol
EDIT 2:...Wait I already mentioned that. >_>
...Shut up, leave me alone. lol

@Joeynator3000 Now you have to post all your settings and findings . I have an audio/video receiver but didn't connect it to the TV because it's in another house and also Xbox One X is HDMI 2.1, LG C9 is HDMI 2.1 but the a/v receiver is older so I would connect it through an optical cable.

I'm curious about your findings and settings, especially for watching films and TV/Netflix. Also for Switch because I might try those settings when playing Wii U (my Switch is Lite).

Movie settings I haven't messed with too much aside from TruMotion, I may mess with that more another time, as for gaming I think most of it I just bumped it up slightly. (color, sharpness, etc.)

I just woke up, so I may post later on it and show my exact settings, still unsure about any videos, we'll see. >.<

Playing with TruMotion more this weekend, I tried one of the preset settings for a little bit with Detective Pikachu. Movie just looked like a buggy mess most of the time, it got annoying so I just turned it off for most of the movie. This time however I'm watching Harry Potter (first movie, lol) and using custom settings, keeping both settings at 5. It looks perfect to me...so I still say this feature in movie gets way too much hate. xD

Anyways just felt like pointing this out, might rewatch Detective Pikachu again with these settings.

Oh yeah, I need to test it again with 2D animation....because last time I watched Futurama while it was enabled and it was much worse. I'll see what it looks like with my settings but I still think it should be left off for 2D animations...Dunno about 3D right now.

So...I decided to see how well the Switch ran without using the Game picture setting, and it was pretty much fine. The input lag was noticeable but barely bothersome (I'd probably wouldn't play Thumper like this, though). I'm currently playing Mario Odyssey these days, but if the lag isn't that bad even with Game mode off, I'm wondering how certain 30fps games will look with the TruMotion thing enabled with De-Judder. lol

Only games I think I have that are 30fps are Luigi's Mansion 3 and Monster Hunter GU...gonna have to try this out. lol

I've installed my new LG 55" C9 OLED this weekend! I haven't been able to play with the settings too much and I haven't played my Switch at all yet, but so far it looks gorgeous and I'm very happy with my purchase. Hopefully this evening I'll find the time to play a bit and/or play some 4k content.

Yeah the Switch looks fine, obviously it's the 1080p games that look the best. Anything lower and the pixelliness and all that becomes way more noticeable, though. But I can deal with it.

@Joeynator3000 this is my problem since moving to 4k. 1080p looks great, everything below is super noticeable comparatively. In fact it bothered me so much I moved on to making a lan room with multiple switches being run on 1080p monitors.

@Joeynator3000 Have you already tried any retro consoles, or the NES/SNES Mini? From what I've read in game console specific tests on these TVs, those 2D pixel-based consoles should actually look great on the C9. Provided you use the right settings, obviously.

Here's some of the info I browsed through, and some videos about the best settings for gaming and/or retro gaming:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2019-05-09-...
https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED/comments/7ulv5a/best_lg_oled_hd...

https://www.avforums.com/threads/lg-oled-c9-setting-and-info....
https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/c9-oled/settings

The first two videos are for the previous model of LG's OLED series, but seeing as the menu options are largely the same, they can still be used. The settings also differ per video, so I guess that if you want to use them as reference, you'll just have to try both and see what works best for your particular setup.

@ThanosReXXX Thanos, Thanos After @Joeynator3000 has dropped a nice chunk of money$$$ on a TV, I think @Octane saw a nice comedic timed window to say, "You picked picked the wrong one", regardless of the TV model ...Or Thanos knows Octane is being silly, and playing along. ; )

@Octane funny : )

@toiletduck yeah! Like that! That's slick. Nice work. For anyone else reading, now, if anyone wants to see which TV was picked, they don't have to do a homework assignment (reading the whole entire thread) to see what TV model was picked.
