Hi guys,

I know some of you are quite well informed on this topic, so I thought I'd drop a ball here... I'm looking for a new television. I haven't looked into it a lot, so I was hoping for some pointers as to what to look for. My requirements/wishes so far:

  • Screen size somewhere between 55-63 inch
  • Definitely 4k
  • Mostly used for: gaming (mainly Switch, a bit of PS4 standard, probably PS5 in the future) // watching sports // Netflix // Casting videos from several apps, so natively supporting ChromeCast would be nice to have (could be fixed with separate CC of course)
  • Audio not important; I'll use a separate audio system
  • I don't want ambilight
  • Budget: 800-1100 euros, unless there's a good reason to look in a more expensive (or cheaper ) segment
  • I will mount the TV on the wall in my living room; it's nice that the TV looks nice when it's turned off

I don't know much about refresh rates, LED/QLED/OLED and picture optimization features (HDR, upscaling capabilities, etc.). So what I'm asking for here:

  • What features are important to take into consideration?
  • Is there any known series and/or brand that seems to meet my wishes best?
  • Any other things to take into account?

Cheers!

Get an LG C9, it's cheaper than it was last year, an awards-winning and future-proof TV with the best image quality and HDMI 2.1, useful for Xbox One X, Series X and PS5. It has amazing HDR, too (Xbox One X, PS4/Pro, Series X and PS5). It upscales low-resolution consoles very well which is great for Nintendo consoles.

TV's seem to have come down in price drastically in the last year. I live in Thailand so TV's are generally cheaper than the West as it is but with poor exchange rates against the pound, not by much. I was in an electrical shop the other week and spotted a 55 inch Sony Smart TV with 4K and UHDR for just 10,500 Baht which works out around £265/ $345. Other brands like Philips, Samsung and LG cost around the same. Last year, they cost nearly double that. That's unbelievably cheap and I am tempted to buy one despite not really needing a new TV.

Kind of wild that many of us all need new TVs at the same time, haha. I also just bought a new TV. However, since TVs cost an arm and a leg over here in Korea, I just got some no-name brand. I’m not too picky about it as long as it’s functional for my needs (playing Switch, displaying video from my laptop, etc.).

I literally just picked up a new TV. Of course, the first one had the screen cracked, and the second one had a bad right speaker... which is the one I kept cause I wasn't going through the awful mess of getting it a third time.

...I love my thread titles...lol

Anyways yeah, I made a similar thread. I'm planning on getting LG's C9 next month, I heard that it upscales the Switch pretty decently and that it also combats burn-in well. I also heard mixed stories on how it looks on this TV, I think they didn't set things up right or something. Anyways once I get my TV I'll mess with the settings myself, I do think someone in my thread posted recommended settings for the Switch, though, can't remember. >.<

@Joeynator3000 yeah I totally used your thread to get up to speed in the mean time

@BlueOcean I've read all your comments and looked into it a bit. If prices are favourable it will definitely be the C9, otherwise it'll be one of her cheaper siblings C8, B8 or B9. Cheers

It seems the LG C9 series already has HDMI 2.1?

Edit: I've checked LGs website. All HDMI ports are 2.1, except the eARC one. That doesn't matter, because my audio system needs ARC and no 2.1.

@Joeynator3000 I posted my LG C9 settings for any console, really. Games looks great like that, no matter if it's Xbox One X or Wii U (my Switch is Switch-less). Some settings I've found posted by others were a bit yellowish, dark or dull. Once you have tried my settings you can tweak them if you like.

The thing I like the most is being able to see in dark scenes because of the unbelievably good contrast. Great for games with dynamic weather and genres like survival horror. Just looking at the starred sky in Final Fantasy XV or Sea of Thieves is amazing. This is one of the best purchases I've ever made.

That's correct, B9, C9 and E9 all have HDMI 2.1.

Don't buy the 2018 models (C8, B8) but a 2019 model (C9, B9) because you want HDMI 2.1 for the next-generation of consoles that is around the corner! So either B9 or C9. Glad that I could share my knowledge with you, I read a lot before buying mine.

@BlueOcean thanks again! I had checked LGs website in the mean time. All HDMI ports are indeed 2.1, except the eARC one. That doesn't matter, because my audio system needs ARC and no 2.1.

I see the main difference between B9 and C9 is the picture processor. So I take it that you concluded that C9s better processor is worth the extra penny?

@toiletduck The C9 has four HDMI 2.1 ports, I've check that on my unit settings and look, copied from the website: "HDMI 1 (Rear)/3 (Side) (HDMI 2.1)". A bit confusing but they're all HDMI 2.1, one of them ARC.

Yes, the B9 has an older chip compared to the C9. The B9 is the only 2019 model with that older (2018) chip. The newer chip of the C9 improves image processing and upscaling so I'd get the C9 instead of the B9 because it improves films, older consoles upscaling and it probably makes the OS faster, too.

I think the Switch needs a slightly different set up in order for it to look decent on this TV though. Like, part of it is the color settings on BOTH the system and TV have to be set to "RGB Limited" or whatever it's called. Doing anything else will cause the Switch to look bad. Dunno about everything else, but yeah. >.<

@Joeynator3000 Hum, but you set that on the consoles and the TV adjusts automatically if I remember correctly. On my Xbox One X I'm using these settings:

Colour depth: 30 bits per pixel (10-bit) because the panels are 10-bit
Colour space (this is what you mentioned): PC RGB (the other option is Standard)

On PS4:
RGB Range: Automatic (the other options are Limited and Full, should try Full).
Deep Colour Output: Automatic (the other option is Off)

I haven't watched the Bayonetta running on LG C9 video you posted, does the guy mention anything interesting?

EDIT:

On the C9: Picture, Additional settings, HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour should be on for Xbox One X and PS4 but it was suggested when I connected them.

I think the guy doesn't talk in the video at all, but yeah...for Switch they said to set the switch to Limited.

Oh yeah, @toiletduck, something I noticed, if you're in the USA, you can get a Best Buy warranty that covers burn-in. I figured I would point that out since I'm doing that, this is basically my first screen that isn't an LCD...so I'm just playing it safe....because paranoid. xD

@toiletduck This is a good time to find deals on previous year models. Here in the US, by April I started seeing places selling out of previous year models. I could still find them, but I wanted to buy from a local store that I like here in the US, Best Buy.

If you start zero-ing in on a model or models, go to a store to see the TVs for yourself. And if you can't narrow it down, definitely ask a sales person what the advantages are between the models (if they have sales people that know the TVs well). (it's also an opportunity to see the TV's onscreen menus, if you're curious, or the remote if online hasn't shown them).

I bought a 65" 2018 Samsung NU8000 last spring. (pardon my US inches sizes 2.54cm= 1 inch )
NU=year 8000=model
NOTE: if you're shopping entry level 60"+ size tv's toward the bottom of the price range, make sure back of the TV has the plugs you want, like multiple HDMI plugs, or an audio-out. My dad bought an entry level 60" in 2015, and it didn't have an audio-out plug for a sound bar.

I'll post the video here, turns out this was a B7 instead...ah well. I thought it was a C9. Still looks fine though.
