I seriously hope the new Mario & Sonic game is announced for the west outside of the Digital Event like Mario Party 10. I have this bad feeling that it is supposed to be one of the "unannounced games" in the Digital Event.

So, either Nintendo has huge plans for E3 or this will be a really underwhelming year since they dropped so much new stuff in the direct today. Although it is only Japan so maybe it won't effect anything for us. And either way no new F-Zero so what should I care.

Oh please, they didn't make any huge new announcements in the Direct. We haven't seen any announcements from the bigger IPs yet, there's no need to worry about E3 being underwhelming yet.

The fact that they made a Nintendo Direct probably means that they have a whole lot more to show us!

So from today's Direct, I think we can expect the new Mario & Sonic game and the Dr Mario game to be seen at E3. Dr Mario will probably be available after the Digital Event as well as Lucas for Smash. I don't expect the new Chibi-Robo at E3 at all. That's a game that is probably better to save for a Direct later this year, assuming it's getting localized. The other games we probably won't see, though Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon will probably get an English trailer.

Updated predictions list for Nintendo:

  • Star Fox
  • Mario Maker
  • Dr Mario (available following Digital Event)
  • Super Mario Galaxy available on Wii U eShop after Digital Event
  • Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
  • Yoshi's Woolly World
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X
  • Devil's Third
  • Fatal Frame
  • Animal Crossing U
  • Unannounced Wii U game (Next Level Games?)
  • Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon
  • Ryu reveal trailer for Smash
  • Lucas available after Digital Event
  • Unannounced 3DS game
  • Pokken Tournament
  • Unannounced Wii U game (Retro Studios?)

I think it's mostly going to be previously announced games at E3 this year.

I think it will mostly be previously announced games at E3, but I doubt it will be this underwhelming. For one, we haven't seen any huge announcements yet, there hasn't been any big games from major IPs that have had a recent announcement. Second, and more importantly, there are several EAD Studios that could be ready to present something (I'd say at least 3 or 4 of them), plus Next Level, Retro, and Camelot. So we should be getting about 4-6 additional announcements at E3.

I agree but also the inclusion of amiibo as well as Splatoon and possibly Mario Kart 8 DLC.

Actually, they could choose to exclude games that have no news from the Digital Event and save them for Treehouse, that could trim down the list. Like say they don't have any new gameplay mechanics or anything to show off for Yoshi's Woolly World, there wouldn't be much reason to show it off in the Digital Event, would there? It'd be much more economical to show it off at Treehouse with new levels.

So I'm thinking it could look more like this:

Digital Event:
-Star Fox
-Mario Maker
-Devil's Third
-Project Giant Robot
-Project Guard
-Fire Emblem If
-DLC for Smash, Mario Kart 8, and Splatoon
-eShop stuff
-Amiibo stuff
-Fatal Frame
-Project Treasure
-Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
-Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympics
-Animal Crossing U
-Next Level's game
-Mario sports U
-new Zelda game for 3DS
-Paper Mario U
-Teaser for new Metroid game
-One more unannounced game

Treehouse:
-Star Fox
-Mario Maker
-Yoshi's Woolly World
-Devil's Third
-Xenoblade Chronicles X
-Project Giant Robot
-Project Guard
-Fire Emblem If
-SMT X FE
-Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympics
-Animal Crossing U
-Next Level's Game
-Mario sports U
-Zelda 3DS
-Paper Mario U

They would take more advantage of the Digital Event/Treehouse combo by using the Digital Event for news and Treehouse to show gameplay.

Yeah I guess anything they do announce won't really be a surprise. Hey, if they give us a new Paper Mario and Metroid, you won't hear any griping from me

Mario Kart 8 DLC is a maybe. I personally think that we're not getting any more of it, but I could be wrong. As for Splatoon, any mention of it and the updates will be during Treehouse Live, not during the Digital Event. As for amiibo, that will be mentioned more during Treehouse Live I imagine. New amiibo announcements are likely to be released during a trailer(s) separately from the Digital Event.

@Bolt_Strike Maybe, but isn't EAD currently working on either games that we know about (Mario Maker, Star Fox, AC Happy Home Designer, Zelda U), games that are highly predictable (Animal Crossing U) or games that will be for NX or the next home console (next 3D Mario)? I feel like any unannounced games from EAD that are for Wii U or 3DS are probably budget or download-only titles. Anything else is probably for the next systems. There is a possibility for WarioWare 3DS though. I don't know, maybe I'm just being cynical

Next Level Games and Retro Studios we will probably see though (or at least Next Level). Camelot could be working on a new Golden Sun I suppose.

Agreed on them using Treehouse Live to lessen the amount of time some games take during the Digital Event. Where as before they'd have some 5+ minute gameplay session for Mario Maker after a 1:30 trailer, they can cut out that gameplay session and put it into Treehouse Live and even show more gameplay. Amiibo announcements (such as the next Smash wave) can be done separately from the Digital Event anyways.

I think you're underestimating EAD, some of the studios can produce new games within the same year depending on the scale. Group 1 is probably the only studio looking at a next gen game (probably Mario Kart 9), the rest could still squeeze in at least one more game on current gen. Group 2 is working on Happy Home Designer, which is a smaller download title and possibly a companion app for the Wii U game. Group 3 is working on Zelda U and a 3DS game, and the 3DS game is probably ready by now (plus they want to give Zelda fans something to satisfy them until Zelda U seeing as it's not coming anytime soon). Group 4 is working on Mario Maker, which is also probably a small game that they could afford to do something else. Group 5 is busy with Star Fox, Project Guard, and Project Giant Robot so they probably don't have anything else. Tokyo Group 1 could be working on another remake (Sunshine HD?). Tokyo Group 2 we already know is working on another Mario game, but I don't think it'll be next gen, it sounds like they have more they want to do with the Wii U (probably either 3D World 2 or Galaxy 3, but if it's the latter, it's probably not ready this year). Next Level and Retro are both working on something, but Next Level is more likely to show it off than Retro (although if it's Prime 4, they might do a teaser this year). Intelligent Systems is always working on something, so even though they're working on two Fire Emblem games they probably have something else for 2016. And Camelot is about due to show something off.

TL;DR these developers are most likely to show something new:
EAD Group 2
EAD Group 3
Next Level
Intelligent Systems
Camelot

EAD Group 4, EAD Tokyo Group 1, EAD Tokyo Group 2, and Retro are also possibilities.

I really hope they announce that they are localizing the new chibi-robo game. I just really want that amiibo (plus a non-ar chibi-robo game would be great).

Actually if the Zelda game is following in U's direction as Miyamoto's statements imply, we probably won't get the Zelda game this year, it'll probably be next year. So Group 3 probably isn't showing anything off this year.

I have my doubts that Devil's Third will turn up in the Digital Event. Nintendo has barely acknowledged the game's existence since last E3, and even then it just appeared without much fanfare. I think it'll be demoed at IGN or somewhere else after the show.

I think there will be no Mario Sports game on Wii U because of Mario & Sonic Olympics. Also Devils Third and Fatal Frame won't be in the digital event but will be in Treehouse due to the age rating.

Itagaki has been talking about good the development has been going though. Nintendo will talk about it at E3. Trust me.

Age rating??? Bayonetta 2 was still in the last Digital Event. Its rated Mature. Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem is rated Mature and will be at E3. I'm sure Fatal Frame and Devil's 3rd will be there.

To snub Devil's Third and Fatal Frame from the main event just because of the rating would be a silly mistake by Nintendo
