Topic: Foster's Home for "Off Topic" Comments

I thought this would be an interesting idea for a "concept" thread:

comments that get moderated for simply being "off topic" are presumably fine in another context. so, here's the context!

post your "off topic" comments here! ✌️maybe they will become the conversation starters they were meant to be in their original home. 😊

(please, no comments that were moderated for any other reason! "off topic" comments only.)

I'll go first:

Bless em, Nintendolife does not employ the most stringent journalism. You won't see Damo referencing "sprite models" in the new Starship Troopers game, or "digital" N64 sticks, over on Time Extension.

Worse, I used to get a "Thanks, corrected!" message in response, whereas now I generally get defensiveness or even moderated away in response to legitimate critique. The feel of the whole site has changed along with the staffing. The tone of the commentariat has shifted in tandem, becoming more tribal and belligerently defensive of Nintendo.

Anyhoo! Yeah the N64 stick was something special! As was the Saturn 3D stick, for different reasons. Something tells me that the Dual Shock type stick design won the day by showing how low cost/low tech that a company could get away with (not that I don't absolutely love that controller design as well,) whereas Sega and Nintendo didnt realize they were dunking so hard they broke the backboard.

I wonder how much of it comes down to the deep recess of the stick, with the pivot point sunk relatively deep inside the body of the controller. People have finally caught onto this, with companies producing stacked stick toppers that extend the length of the stick, but these have the side effect of also extending the lateral movement of the stick, without increasing the "resolution." I replaced one of my OG 64 sticks with a modern 8bd gamecube type replacement, and the pivot is almost "outside" the controller! it feels very different. Functional for most games, but when you play a game like fzero x which actually requires smooth, subtle use of the inner 50% of the sticks travel, you are definitely at a disadvantage, and having less fun.

OTOH, Fzero GX feels absolutely fantastic with a gamecube controller, so it is once again down to what hardware the game was originally designed for. interestingly, GX on emulation feels incredible with the Steamdeck's (very excellent) conventional potentiometer based sticks, but not particularly well at all with the 8bitdo 64 controller which (obv) has a gamecube style stick.

As a side note, a lot of this can be satisfactorily tweaked in settings, if available. Steam input has multiple response curves, from "aggressive" to "relaxed," or similar, and inner and outer deadzones et al. This kind of thing should be standard, imo, but as it stands it is a testament to the extent which Valve almost uniquely insists that its users play the way they want to play. 👍

Eel

A thread for off-topic thoughts sounds fun (if a bit similar to the chit-chat thread), but...

Making a thread specifically and exclusively for comments that were removed by moderation doesn't seem like a great idea tbh

@Eel

I get what you are saying, but the idea is that it was off topic there, and it isnt off topic here. Hence, I've specifically requested that comments moderated for any other reason be excluded from posting.

part of it is that im always very curious to know what the person had said, whenever I see the "off topic" flag. it cant be offensive or else it wouldve gotten a more severe flag, right?

anyway, we shall see. I dont see what the problem would be though considering the nature of the "offense" doesnt really apply here. ✌️

If you discuss the subject of the off-topic comment,
does the thread become on topic?
Must every comment be replied with another moderated comment,
in a constant stream of non-sequiturs?
How wonderfully chaotic.

This thread sounds like a great idea, my friend. I definitely struggle to resist the urge to go off topic in certain threads so this thread will certainly come in handy in the future. Nice to see you with more cool ideas. ✌️

*"Must every comment be replied with another moderated comment,

see, these are the type of questions I don’t want to answer. 😂

@Yousef-

I find the "off topic" moderation particularly jarring when the comment was in direct response to another comment in the thread, so its also a way for people to still make the connections and continue conversations that get truncated in comments 😊 I'm glad you like it, feel free to make use of this space! ✌️

Anti-Matter

So, what can I say here for off topics comment?
Can I say whatever I want or rant here?

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om...

@Anti-Matter

Anti, I feel like you are almost uniformly on topic with your comments, but do you ever get a comment moderated simply for being "off topic?" this is a place for those comments 😊✌️

btw this thread has already attracted some of my favorite Lifers so I'm gonna call this one a success regardless of what happens from here 🥳 It's always fun to get you all in the same "place," thanks for commenting on my weird thread!!

I think I have ever get moderated for my "off topics" comments, but I didn't really remember what did I say and I rarely got moderated for off topics comment since I tried to be careful in typing the comments.
If I remembered, I posted off topics comment when I had issue with certain things and I brought it into the article that still have connection with my issue but apparently it considered as off topics comment.

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om...

@Anti-Matter

i think i know what you mean. sometimes I feel like my comment was on topic with the conversation as it flows, but might be seen by the moderators as having strated too far from the article itself. which, fair enough.

on the other hand, i feel like comments are for the commenters, not the moderators, if you get my meaning. sometimes slight non sequiturs are more interesting or thoughtful than just everyone saying "can't wait for this!" or "Nintendo is awesome" or what have you.

for what it's worth, i think the most off topic thing i ever see you post is "still no Bluey in the top 40 😢" which isnt technically off topic but it does amuse me every time 😊✌️

I can only game when i drink Coffee with whey isolate protein(40g) & healthy fats(Coconut oil for ex). Or, when i mix Caco powder/nibs(a super food that elevates the mood and then some), again with healthy fats(Think 100% Extra virgin olive oil) and carbs(Berries, mangos etc ala > Protein smoothie).

Back when i was in my 20's i never needed coffee or cacao to give me the energy or just to act as a 'pick me up', in order to game. But at 41, ya. I need it. Even with my super healty diet(I do cheat meals like 2x a week) and exersise I'm not as exciteable and amped up as I was at lets say 26 or 27. Wonderment fades as you get older. it's important to retain that inner child like spark, but even then you're faced with your own mortality realizing just how short life is and that if you're my age you're pretty half way through it if you're lucky. Without the following above, I'm moody bugger. I can't live with cacao haha.

Oh, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 : Dream Warriors is the greatest horror movie sequel of all time.
