Hello! I was bored and I thought this could be a fun topic! Not necessarily the most gaming related topic, but still in the entertainment realm, so not too far off. Anyway, I wanted to know, what are your guy's favorite movies of the year? Feel free to even do a short list if you'd like. Here's my quick top 5.
1. Dune 2: Simply the most breathtaking theatre experience I have ever had. I love epic sci-fi and fantasy stories, as well as compelling character dramas, and this is somehow both!
2. Sonic 3: This is entirely my Sonic bias, and I am okay with that.
3. Transformers one: Simply the best piece of Transformers media out there. Displays simply one of the most believable friendships I have ever seen in a film, and the final act is insane.
4. The Wild Robot: Just an all around incredible emotional movie. Really feels like a classic Pixar film, which is incredibly high praise. Good work, DreamWorks.
5. Deadpool and Wolverine: Just fun. Perfect to turn on when I just need something to put me in a good mood.
What do you guys think? And what are your lists? I look forward to reading them!
I haven't seen the awards movies yet, but so far for me, 3 movies stand above the rest.
In release order they are:
Deadpool & Wolverine
The Substance an absolutely BONKERS horror movie, that's quite darkly funny and insanely entertaining. Make sure you watch it in a room with as many people as possible! It stars Demi Moore!
Wicked
I tend to respond best to funny movies. Even for very serious movies, I find I need some element of humour, even if it is very dark and occasional, as like my key into a story.
@Bigmanfan I'm not sure I've even watched 5 new movies this year. But I have seen The Wild Robot and I really liked it so that would definitely be in the top places if I had a list.
Only other new movie I can think of is Paddington In Peru, and I found that pretty mediocre, not as good as the first two Paddington films.
Don't think I'd even heard of Transformers One, but I'm intrigued by your hype for it so will check it out.
Dune 2 passed me by. I did see Dune 1 in a cinema, but it didn't leave me with much of an appetite for 2, it would seem. I'll check it some day.
One other film I did see was the Bad Boys (4) movie. A bit disappointing, doesn't stand up to Bad Boys 1 & 2 levels of fun. But I i should rewatch it soon as I am a franchise fan.
Also watched The Super Mario Bros. Movie again on blu-ray, and possibly enjoyed it even more than the first time, so that's definitely a keeper.
@gcunit I also ended up getting the Mario movie physically recently. Probably not the objective "best" movie of all time, but it just makes me so happy as a Mario fan. You probably didn't hear about Transformers one because it had some of the worst marketing ever. But I would highly recommend it, especially if you're a fan of the old cartoon (which is also great!).
still have a lot to get to (for example was supposed to see sonic 3 in a bit but plans fell through last-minute) but my top 5 right now looks like this:
1. la chimera - a beautiful film about exploring the past to interpret the present, complimented with a dreamlike visual flair captured through a variety of film stocks. not sure how much further i can talk about this without going into spoilers but it's a truly monumental work of art
2. evil does not exist - simple in concept, profound in execution; a film about our shared ecological responsibility and the devastating impact of disrupting the delicate balance between nature and societal development
3. grand tour - very fun experiment with form and narrative structure; the juxtaposition between its period piece setting and the modern day makes for some of the most striking and sumptuous images of the year
4. megalopolis - a bit of a hot take but i honestly was completely on board with it. very funny (and not always intentionally so) but also immensely sincere and optimistic in how it chooses to depict the future. will a hundred percent become a cult classic in a few years
5. wallace and gromit: vengeance most fowl - my favourite in the series since a close shave. saw it a couple weeks ago and have been wanting to rewatch ever since. feathers mcgraw's return is handled incredibly well and feels far more significant than simple nostalgia bait. an absolutely terrific follow up to the wrong trousers
I saw quite a few films at the cinema this year, but there isn't really one that stands out to me as a clear favourite. That may change on Christmas Day with Wallace & Gromit, but as things stand I think I'd give it to Lonely Castle in the Mirror, an anime film I only watched because my local cinema had discounted tickets for it if you bought a ticket for The Boy and the Heron, but I ended up loving it. It's actually from 2022 though (although I'm not sure if had a UK release before this year), so if we're not counting that...
If I wanted to look like a proper artsy cinema connoisseur I'd choose All of Us Strangers, which was very good and I'd highly recommend it, but it's not actually my personal favourite. Wicked Little Letters is another smaller British film that I definitely enjoyed but isn't quite Film of the Year material.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the best in the series, an opinion that no-one else seems to hold, so that's my choice for the most underrated film of the year. The Wild Robot is gorgeous and lovely but is just about trumped by Kensuke's Kingdom in the 'ecologically-minded animated films' stake in my view. But if I had to choose a favourite film that actually premiered this year I think I'd have to be predictable (given my Pixar bias and the fact it's the biggest film of the year) and give it to Inside Out 2, which made me feel emotional about emotions all over again.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Switch Online
@Ralizah
PG movies are still I considered as E10+ movies by ESRB rating.
Here in Indonesia, the PG movies (NOT PG-13) are considered SU (Semua Umur) or All Ages.

I really likes Wicked Little Letters and All Of Us Strangers too.
I do hold points back for All Of Us Strangers as even though it's set in London it never felt set in London to me, and afterwards a look on wiki told me it's because it's actually based on a Japanese book which probably explains that. Still wonderful film which keeps all the drama and far fetched bits feeling natural.
Wicked Little Letters is like the perfect movie to watch with your Gran and you're both cheering at the end. I love watching Olivia Colman in roles where she's having fun.
@jump Olivia Colman's always great, I'm kind of surprised she hasn't been made a dame yet.
Did you watch the recent BBC series Lost Boys and Fairies? I'd recommend it if you liked All of Us Strangers - it's another drama about traumatised gay men dealing with grief and addiction, but it's ultimately more uplifting than AOUS (it's not quite as bleak as it sounds!)

Olivia will become a Dame sooner or later, she already had a CBE which puts her ahead of Kate Winslet. Unless the Royal family have a grudge against her for The Crown. I’ve never seen the point myself, there’s a quote from Robert Smith of The Cure about how it’s basically award given by someone who achievements in life come from the family they were born into rather than a prize from your peers or from others who achieved which sums it up for me.
I will add Lost Boys & Fairies to the my watchlist, thanks for the heads up. I’m currently watching 100 Years Of Solitude (I LOVED the book) and between having to spend time with over Xmas I may not get around to it for while though.
I won't write too much about each picture, but here's my favourite 10 English language movies of 2024:
Civil War
Incredibly eerie movie. Many frightening moments, without doing horror tropes and being a drama film. Loved how they focused on the journalists trying to cover the war, and their growth through their shared trauma on their journey.
Inside Out 2
I was not prepared for how good this movie was. The way it handles more complex teenage emotions, but in a way fathomable for tweens was genius. Adored it.
Wicked - Part I
I'm so glad we're finally getting good musical adaptations on the screen again. With this and Spielberg's phenomenal West Side Story I'm hopeful for a musical renaissance. I almost had lost hope that we would ever see great choreography in movies again, especially filmed as well as this.
The Wild Robot
Lovely artistic direction and a wholesome emotional film that truly captures a part of the human experience. Quite an achievement with a robot protagonist surrounded by animal friends.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Never cared for the other movies in the series, but this one really worked for me. Don't really know why. I just thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Challengers
First time I've seen a Hollywood picture where I went out of the theatre wondering if I hated or loved it. A bold movie that I really wish performed better.
Dune: Part Two
Didn't care for the first one, but this really worked for me. Glad I saw the first one though, because I needed all the exposition from that film to really get part two.
Kinds of Kindness
I kinda wish I saw this at home instead of the cinema. I loved all three novella films, but it's too long for me to sit still and watch three unrelated movies back to back. Recommend it wholeheartedly, but I'd also recommend having at least a small break between each film in the film.
Alien: Romulus
I love Alien and Aliens. Alien: Romulus takes the best from both and mends it together in a great fashion. I'm so glad the Alien series seems to be back on track.
Twisters
I'm a sucker for disaster movies, and it's really nice when they're as good as this and not just a guilty pleasure.

Yeah, I can't argue with that!
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Switch Online
Been a few months since I've been to the theatre so there's quite a bit I haven't seen that I want to (Sonic 3, the Substance, Mufasa, Nosferatu, Gladiator 3, etc.). Been too busy because of the holidays.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
Just Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire & Abigail. I only saw them buy getting the Blu-rays. I couldn't find the time & money to go to the movie theaters. Plus, they've been gettin' more expensive than they should be...
Good thing movies come to DVD/Blu-ray/4KUHD sooner these days than how it was back in the 2000's.
I sell my famous Chesapeake Tupperware.
I ACCEPT NO DEBIT CARDS!
DO YOU HEAR ME!?!
Sonic the Hedgehog 3, also because it was the only 2024 film I saw haha. I saw way more movies months ago but they don’t count because they are all older movies.

If you are curious, my favorite game of all time is Conker’s Bad Fur Day and I can’t shut up about it.
