I agree that at the time (around 2001/2002), Super Mario Sunshine did not appeal to me…….this is why I, and I think quite a few of my friends as well, jumped ship from the N64 to either the Xbox or PS2.
The Gamecube era, upon retrospection, Nintendo made a lot of decisions that didn’t appeal to the wider spectrum of gamers. So your telling me that your launching with a Luigi game, where I suck up ghosts? No………..Pikmin, No…………a 3D Mario game in Defino with the hoover nozzle? No,…………………a Mario Kart game where you switch between drivers, no………….a Zelda game with an art style appealing to 4 year olds. Hell no.
It’s all very much superficial, but to a teenager, Nintendo lost some appeal compared to the Halo’s and Metal Gears.
I don't get why people hate Sunshine so much. Its a great game with good music and all. The only problem with it was the 100% completion which I think will be better refined in the HD release.
The camera was better than the one in Super Mario 64, and The only reason Fludd should be difficult to use is if Super Mario 64 was your only previous experience with a 3D platformer, because all they did was take mechanics introduced by other games at that point and threw in a water spin on them.
I will agree that it wasn't without its annoyances, especially the Fluddless sections, but I'd still argue that it's the best 3D platformer in the series.
I love Super Mario 3D World, it has done most things right (the camera at times sucks hard) and everything I ever wanted from Mario game or any platformer period. I don't like Galaxy at all - camera is atrocious at times, Mario controls like a tank, and replaying the same stage 7 or 8 times is no fun to me at all (Galaxy 2 with green stars is total overkill... and incredibly forced). The only music I can remember are that from Mario 3 and Galaxy theme, others are putting me to sleep, sadly. I really tried to like this game, but every time I'm coming back to it, I'm bored or frustrated by it. I feel like it lacks the positive power like SM3DW has
I absolutely love 3D Mario, however it's pretty clear that the public at large have never quite taken to it as much as they have 2D Mario (seeing as how the 2D ones tend to vastly outsell the 3D ones). I guess for the simple reason that they are more complicated and more difficult to play, they require navigation and exploration, therefore they can be more confusing, disorientating and inaccessible for those used to the simplicity of 2D Mario. While we as gamers/Nintendo fans have always seen 3D Mario as a natural progression of the Super Mario franchise, I think a lot of casual/non gamers see 2D Mario as the true Mario games and the 3D ones as some weird spinoff.
