"a unique multiplayer-only experience that really could only work as a DSiWare title"
What..? IGN and Vicarious Visions are just screwing with me now.
Let's not forget- you can do the same thing and more with nnooo's AWESOME myNotebook for just three bucks less.

I don't necissarily think that it's not a good multiplayer game, but there is one thing that is horrible about it. WHY NOT USE PAPER?! Sorry for caps, but seriously, why would you spend $5 on a game you can play on paper? Also, WaltzElf, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is not just for gamers. In case you didn't notice, Nintendo is always talking about the multiplayer aspect, and they are correct in what they say. It don't take a gamer to run and jump on goombas

My girlfriend is a non-gamer and she can't get through a single level of NSMBWii without my help. Consequently, she's not even slightly interested in the game.

Mixed Messages is great or ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE. It's as accessible as the most basic of board games, and it's genius for that.

Why not use paper? Because it's simply not as entertaining. Why play Water Warfare when you can just use a few water pistols? Why play Tennis video games when you can head down to a local tennis court. It's... not smart... logic to say games in different mediums can be compared. They can't.

If you run and jump on goombas, doesn't that make you a gamer?

You're almost making a point here, but I think you're missing something. The virtualization of a game like tennis means you don't have to learn the real sport to get a feel for playing it. The virtualization of a pen and paper game is seriously not worth the effort in the first place, not to mention pens and paper have not been outlawed (yet) for being too low-tech, or not as entertaining as video games, as you put it.

It's not just virtualising the game though - it's presenting the game in a different format.

Just like the computer game versions of Monopoly and Scrabble and Sudoku typically offer up something different to the pen-and-paper/ boardgame version of them (Even if it's just presentation - a nicely presented Sudoku game is light years more entertaining than a newspaper), Mixed Messages offers up a fun presentation and the ability to save previous games to look back on in the future.

It's simple, sure - it's only $5, but to say it's utterly pointless is to essentially say that there's no point to having a few hundred other games available on consoles.

hat might have worked on me, except I actually play tennis as my favorite sport. I would much rather head down to tennis courts than pull out the wii. I would rather have a real water fight than have a virtual one. Some things [such as stomping on turtles and goombas] are better of in the virtual world, while some [sports and such] are better off in the real world. Sure, Virtual sports are still fun, but why pay for them, when you can just grab a ball and head outside. Also, not to be rude, but saying that your girlfriend can't play NSMBW does not convince me in the least way. Name about 15 more people that can't play it, and I'll believe you. Anyways, I'm tired of arguing, so here's my main point: it's a fun multiplayer game, but it is not unique in any way nor is it worth the money. I think that something more unique or more entertaining should have taken it's place. One thing that bugs me: if you have 12 people playing, what are 11 people supposed to do while the 1 person is taking his or her turn? Sure, they can talk, but that's not part of the actual game itself. The fun part is seeing what's at the end, which is about 40-50% of the entire game. Another bad point: It's not going to be very fun with only 2 [possibly 3]players, but a game like Pop Island will be great. I'm finished debating, so feel free to disagree or make a smart point about where I'm wrong, but I'm not going to be replying.

Just let it happen.

And with that, IGN just lot a lot of crediblity with their DSiWare outlook.

Tomena Sanner: Because dancing businessmen are awesome.

I bet most people complaining here haven't even tried the game and are just supporting the rating here on NL without considering that the game can be enjoyable. Ironically, I haven't tried it yet either.

Well, that's it. I've got the game, use it regularly, and would rate it a 9/10.

I'm also a journalist, so take that as you will, but I stand by the IGN award as something they got right

The only reason (in my opinion, at least) that ign put it up for nomination was that they forgot 2 other games, Pokémon Platinum and Phantasy Star 0. If either was up for nomination Mixed Messages probably would've never even been considered.

Exactly.

for 5$ you can save billions of pieces of paper and use them for better stuff like homework or note taking

This is ground control to major Tom, you've really made the grade. And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare

IGN's Nintendo Team is as adorably bad as ever.

On DSiWare alone, games like Pop Island own it in multiplayer. But that's just my opinion.

I'm not 100% sure Pop Island made it in time to even be considered tbh. It's funny all the IGNorant hate involving this game. So voting for Mixed Messages, which I'm guessing none of you played, makes them suck, huh. Yeah, I visit IGN frequently and the editors do tend to get on my nerves (that casual/hardcore bs they do all the time has got to stop). When I was at a job assessment program, games weren't allowed for obvious reasons. However, my instructor saw me play Mixed Messages with a group of friends during break. Once she learned about it, she figured it would be a good excersize for the entire class. That it was.

I don't know about BEST of the year, but Mixed Messages is a multiplayer game I play quite often when a group of my non gamer friends are around and we all have a blast.

"And with that, IGN just lot a lot of crediblity with their DSiWare outlook."

Hell, with websites like IGN, it's amazing they have a DSiWare outlook at all. You've been to Metacritic lately? No one except usually an IGN or Nintendo Life ever reviews DSiWare.

"for 5$ you can save billions of pieces of paper and use them for better stuff like homework or note taking"

The latter of which I use myNotebook: Blue for.
