I feel like they usually have a pretty long overlap period... Nowhere near as long as past Playstation products, but usually enough of one... Like there were Donkey Kong Country games coming out for the SNES when the 64 was out!

...And with the 3DS no quite doing gangbusters, they are probably happy that they didn't completely abandon the DS leading up to the 3DS release.

Nintendo only published Street Fighter Alpha 2 (one month) and DKC3 came out after the N64 (two months after) and it was Nintendo's last NA release for over a year (with only Kirby's Dream Land 3, Arkanoid and Space Invaders released after that).
Otherwise, they only released the Player's Choice games.
N64 was dropped almost as soon as the GameCube came out (maybe because it was in last place of its generation in Japan?). I recall the GameCube lasting longer, but I think that was strictly in production of more copies of GC games as well as GC controllers/memory cards, possibly in part because of the Wii launch hype (in part because they'd lose sales to those who didn't get a Wii, or to promote backwards compatibility).
I recall Game Boy Color wasn't promoted very much after the GBA game out (probably one reason almost nobody heard of Shantae until years after release).

Ummm isnt the 3DS part of the DS line. After all its called a 3DS.

Partially true.

3DS is the Gameboy Advance of the DS family. As in, it's the next generation, not revision.

I put it this way:
Gameboy Original is to DS (phat)
Gameboy Pocket/Light is to DSlite
Gameboy Color is to DSi and XL (take note that GBC had games exclusive to it and some games use special features that work on original Gameboys, but can only be seen on GBC just as DSi exclusive games and enhanced games such as Art Academy and Pokemon Black and White)

Gameboy Advance is to 3DS

Kinda repeating itself there.

Anyhow, back on topic, I think games made for DS will still be happening for another year at least. Not sure if Nintendo will be publishing or producing any more games for the system however- maybe one more Pokemon title as one is now in development along with a new 3DS title.

Black version gets nothing extra in an dsi over a ds lite nor is there advantages to playing it in a 3ds. The dsi and xl will get a year to 2 years at most before they lose out and are no longer made
