Topic: How long will Nintendo keep the DS going?

Since the 3DS has been out for a while, I was beginning to think of when Nintendo will cut there DS Line, I personally now think it won't be for another 6-8 months at least, since the DSi XL is getting a new color, plus the
DS has a pretty good Christmas Line-Up: (Professor Layton: The Last Spectator, Kirby Mass Attack, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2) and even already a game coming in Q1 2012 (Super Fossil Fighters). Also the DS may last the whole 8th Generation like the PS2, since the DS is the 2nd Best Selling Consol of all time, and maybe the Big N's is to make it the 1st's? Also the DS is still selling fairly well, so it would be a bad descision to discontinue it now. If anything, I do think they will cancel the DS Lite first, since there dirt cheap now. (Only $79.99) Also I think that Nintendo should lower the price of the DSi XL to under $169.99 since it's the same price as the 3DS.
Your thoughts?

If the past says anything, Nintendo usually supports their previous handheld for a few months after the new one's launch, and then it's up to 3rd parties to continue to support the thing or not. I'm fairly certain, assuming no major DS game announcements at TGS, that Layton & the Last Specter and Kirby: Mass Attack will be the DS's 1st party swan songs.

Exactly.

That was because the Japanese hated the N64 (and supposedly Europeans were just a little less apathetic.)

I think it's crazy that the DSi XL is the same price as the 3DS. It may work out that way in terms of production costs, but from the average consumer's point of view it's just confusing.

As for DS support I think the first-party releases are basically done and it'll just be a matter of the currently-announced ones being released.

As for third-party support, there's at least one game (Devil Survivor 2) coming out in 2012. I think it will depend heavily on how the 3DS goes. If it takes off soon, lots of developers will likely move on to it, but if it continues to sell below expectations, will they come back to the DS, or drop support entirely?

It'll be very interesting to see.

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

After this year I think the DS will start to die off as the only game confirmed for next year is Shin megami tensei: devil survivor 2 but thats only for America so there aren't any DS games confirmed for EU release next year. I guess there is the possibility of the other Inazuma eleven games on DS coming out in Europe though and since Atlus release a lot of their games in America, America might get Noora and the time studio too.

Isn't the Lite already discontinued? Thought they were all DSi-onward now.

Considering they just announced a new XL color... too long. They need to drop the DS (at least as far as hardware manufacture goes) or the 3DS will continue to fail. There's just no two ways about that.

they honestly have kept it going too long already, the longer they keep it going, the worse 3DS sales shall be

no, 3DS sales have been (were) bad because they expected you to buy a new handheld for 250 dollars with no original, must-have games for over half a year and not doing a good enough job getting people aware that it isn't just another new DS.

The fact that DS was doing better and DS was the system that actually has had must-have original games this year is probably a coincidence.

I'll believe this when Xenoblade is released in America.

What's that have to do with anything?

i give it until the start of next year. then nintendo will probably or inevitably turn their attentions to the 3DS. but the DS has been one of the many success stories for nintendo, console and games sales- wise.

Partially true.

3DS is the Gameboy Advance of the DS family. As in, it's the next generation, not revision.

I put it this way:
Gameboy Original is to DS (phat)
Gameboy Pocket/Light is to DSlite
Gameboy Color is to DSi and XL (take note that GBC had games exclusive to it and some games use special features that work on original Gameboys, but can only be seen on GBC just as DSi exclusive games and enhanced games such as Art Academy and Pokemon Black and White)

Gameboy Advance is to 3DS

Kinda repeating itself there.

Anyhow, back on topic, I think games made for DS will still be happening for another year at least. Not sure if Nintendo will be publishing or producing any more games for the system however- maybe one more Pokemon title as one is now in development along with a new 3DS title.
