Just think about this awesome new game idea I came up with: after his humiliating defeat, the Dark Star rises to power again and takes over the whole kingdom, including Bowser's domain. Seeing that he thinks the whole kingdom is his, he forms an army of his most loyal troops to fight against the Dark Star's Shadowy Forces. It could control like Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, with multiple enemy types to customize your troop with (Suck as Mushroom mainstays like Goombas and Koopas to forgotten foes like Spike and Dino Rhinos). It could maybe also have online play. The troop combinations would be endless. And it could be called something like Bowser Tactics or Bowser's Kindom Crusher. Good or bad idea?
Bad. Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are both excellent strategy franchises. We don't need a Mario-themed cash-in.
You could have said something similar about a "Mario-themed RPG cash-in" several years ago. And you would have been wrong. I love tactical RPG's and strategy games like Advance Wars. And there's still room for innovation. Might and Magic just proved that. I think it's a great idea, Dragoon.

If I were to say the same about SMRPG, I'd be right, as it wasn't a good game yet still made a ton of money.
Aside from that, there are still some fundamental diffferences. Nintendo at that time didn't have any RPG franchises so they were trying something new (wait nevermind there was Mother, which was nowhere near mainstream, and largely unknown outside of Japan). With a Mario strategy game things are vastly different, Nintendo has two excellent strategy franchises.
Besides there are better things to do with Mario, than have him trample of the toes of his fellow Nintendo franchises.
Huh. Didn't care for smrpg? Or any of the Papers? I don't really care what makes money, but gamers and critics will agree that those are good games. Mother is a different beast because there's not platforming/timing element. And there's room for this if they move into tower defense or rts territory. Not that they'd have to for me to be on board. Really, if they "skinned" Advance Wars with a Mario motif, I'd be interested. The stories in those games are kind of underwhelming anyway IMO.

SMRPG isn't a good game. Paper Mario 1&2 are both great, but they weren't the first foray into a Mario RPG so I didn't use them as examples.
Taking Advance Wars and giving it a Mario skin would fit cash-in to a T.
@Digiki if you don't think that SMRPG is a good game, then that is your opinion. I agree with you, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game-it just means we don't like it. You can't say that the paper marios don't count, because that would mean this Bowser thing wouldn't count either. I myself think it might be fun.

The more I think about it , the more I think this is a good idea. The military motif just doesn't appeal to some people. Instead of tanks shooting infantry, the battle animation could be Mario jumping on a Koopa or something. The terrain could be those little hills with eyes instead of mountains. Cities could be fortresses, factories could be pipes, HQ's could be airships/castles, etc.
