I realised recently that you don't have to do many of the bosses in Megaman 2 properly (Or worry about not getting hit in order to succeed). That lowered my opinion of it. Don't like the sprite flicker.

I would suggest SMB1, although MM2 is still great. I suggest picking up both if you can.
Games I'm playing currently: Legend of Zelda: A Link Betweeen Worlds, Tearaway
Games I'm excited for: Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. 4, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8

Get the lost levels it will last longer than both combined to master it. (I have still not managed world 9 and there are the secret worlds A-D as well I haven't done). Plus playing with Luigi is like an easy mode. (You can skip over the top of the hardest bits).

SMB1 has shown it's age. Mega Man 2 still holds up well. Go with Mega Man 2 unless you have nostalgia for the former or if Run'n Gun platformers are not your thing.
Though if you could wait awhile for SMB3 to come out I'd recommend you to go for that.
